    Est: €1,600 - €3,200

Rahmen. After Matthias Stom (circa 1600 - 1645). Painted probably 18th century. Oil on canvas, relined.

    Jul. 09, 2026

MATTHIAS STOMER (BOTTEGA DI) PROFETA GEREMIA

    Est: €3,000 - €8,000

Entro cornice.

ESAU TRITT SEIN ERSTGEBURTSRECHT AN JACOB AB Öl auf Leinwand. 132 x 172 cm. In vergoldetem Prunkrahmen. (1481806) (10) Matthias Stomer the Elder, ca. 1600 – ca. 1650, attributed ESAU SELLS HIS BIRTHRIGHT TO JACOB Oil on canvas. 132 x 172 cm. In a gilded decorative frame. Note: Stomer's painting reveals a highly personal synthesis of the Caravaggio style and the naturalistic influence of the Netherlands: one of its distinctive features is the depiction of figures in the foreground, which are very close to the viewer and characterised by strong chiaroscuro contrasts and pronounced realism. • MATTHIAS STOMER (STOM), attributed (Amersfoort, c. 1600 – Sicily?, c. 1650) - Saint Peter Penitent

MATTHIAS STOMER (STOM), attributed (Amersfoort, c. 1600 – Sicily?, c. 1650) - Saint Peter Penitent

    Est: €30,000 - €35,000

Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 127 × 97 cm. The painting depicts Saint Peter at the moment of his repentance, immediately after denying Christ three times, an episode recounted in the Gospels. The apostle appears in the foreground with his hands clasped in prayer and his gaze directed upwards, illuminated by an intense beam of light piercing the gloom. To his left, a rooster is visible, symbolizing the moment when Peter recalls Christ's prophecy and becomes aware of his denial. The composition fully embodies the language of Caravaggesque naturalism, characterized by strong contrasts of light and shadow and the intense emotional charge of the figures. The dramatic treatment of the lighting, which models the saint's face and hands emerging from a dark background, as well as the realism of the features and the psychological focus of the scene, recall the style of Matthias Stomer (Stom), one of the leading Caravaggist painters of Dutch origin active in Italy during the first half of the 17th century. Stomer spent much of his career in southern Italy, particularly in Naples and Sicily, where his painting is characterized by half-length compositions illuminated by intense, concentrated light, a rich palette, and a sculptural treatment of drapery folds. These characteristics are evident in this work, especially in the volumetric construction of the figure, the chromatic contrast between the ochre cloak and the bluish tunic, and the expressive intensity of the apostle's face. The scene belongs to a theme widely used in 17th-century devotional painting, in which the repentance of Saint Peter becomes an image of profound spiritual introspection. MATTHIAS STOMER (STOM) OR FRANCESCO FRACANZANO (Amersfoort, c.1600 – Sicily?, c.1650 / Monopoli, 1612 – Naples, 1656) - Head of Saint Francis

    Est: €6,000 - €7,000

Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 47 × 36 cm. The work depicts the head of Saint Francis of Assisi in a profound contemplative pose. The saint appears bowed, his gaze lowered, his face illuminated by an intense light emerging from the shadows, a characteristic feature of Baroque tenebrism. The composition focuses all attention on the saint's spiritual expression, highlighting his aged face, long beard, and the dark habit barely suggested in the background. The treatment of light, which models the face through strong contrasts of chiaroscuro, recalls the pictorial style popularized in Italy by the followers of Caravaggio during the 17th century. This type of representation of penitent saints, centered on the bust or head, was especially common in Naples and Rome, where the dramatic lighting reinforced the devotional intensity of the image. Due to its stylistic characteristics, the work has been associated with the circle of Matthias Stomer (Stom), a Dutch-born painter active in Italy, or with the Neapolitan master Francesco Fracanzano, both artists linked to Caravaggesque naturalism and known for their figures of intense spirituality illuminated by a concentrated light. The attribution of the painting is supported by a communication from the art historian Nicola Spinosa, one of the leading specialists in Neapolitan painting of the 17th century. Lot in international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export permit from the country of origin may be required.

LOT ESSAY: There is very little known about the early life of this Low Countries painter who settled in Italy and created most of his artistic output there. Matthias Stom (also called Stomer) was thought to have been born in southern Holland or Flanders around 1600 and his early works suggest that he may have been trained in Utrecht in the late-Mannerist tradition of Abraham Bloemaert (1564-1651) and Joachim Wtewael (c.1566-1638). His early style though, shows the influence of Gerard van Honthorst (1592-1656), who is known to have returned to Utrecht in 1621 after spending more than ten years working in Italy under the influence of the works of Caravaggio with their dramatic contrasts of light and dark. Though there is no documentary evidence of Stom's apprenticeship to Honthorst, he was strongly influenced by the slightly older artist's work and may also have been inspired by him to travel to Italy, where the earliest documented reference to Stom is in 1630 and has him living in Rome, in the same house that another Utrecht painter, Paulus Bor, had occupied earlier. Whilst living there he was able to study first hand the great altarpieces of Caravaggio and his followers, as well as those by van Honthorst. During this time he painted the large altarpiece of The Assumption with Saints Rocco, Sebastian and Carlo Borromeo (now in the Church of Sta Maria di Lorino, Chiuduno) and other larger works now in private collections in Lombardy. After 1632 he left Rome and went south to Naples, then the second largest city in Europe, which had a tradition of employing Netherlandish artists, many of whom had been working there since the late 16th century. Research on Netherlandish immigrant painters in Naples by Marija Osnabrugge outlines his social milieu there: "discovery of some payments and an accusation filed against him at the ecclesiastical court not only proves his physical presence in Naples, but also sheds light on the social and professional issues that he dealt with in the city. As the accusation was filed by one of his pupils…we now have evidence that he did not work alone in Naples. On the other hand, Stom was involved with social outsiders like English and Dutch sailors, arguably an indication that he did not (attempt to) integrate socially. At the same time, this lack of integration apparently did not frustrate his career: Neapolitan inventories indicate that he was popular amongst collectors in Naples… Stom was appreciated by Neapolitans for his characteristic paintings of candlelight scenes with half figures…Neapolitans credited himwith the introduction of this type of painting…" (1) Benedict Nicolson in his Burlington Magazine article of April 1977, "Stomer Brought Up-to-date" lists about a dozen such genre scenes of soldiers, musicians, boys and old women all lit by a single light source all having been created in this Neapolitan period. In this list the current painting, then in a private collection in London, is illustrated and places it in the 1633- 39 Neapolitan period as number 85. (2) Stom then travelled to Sicily where he stayed for almost ten years painting works for churches in Palermo, Messina and Monreale, as well as three canvases acquired in 1648 by Rembrandt's famous collector and patron, Antonio Ruffo, Duke of Messina. As with the lack of information surrounding his birth and early years, his later years are somewhat unknown and can only be tracked by the works he created. The actual date and place of his death are unknown. oil on canvas cm 119 x 151 LITERATURE M. The work is accompanied by expertise by professors Ferdinando Arisi and Maurizio Marini, who advance the attribution to the Dutch Caravaggesque master. Marini published the painting when it was still in a private collection in London and dates it around 1632, when Stomer left Rome to move to Naples, for "the Honthorstian components and the quality of the support (semi-refined hemp)" (Marini, p. 42). The painting can be compared with that of a similar subject, executed by Stomer, in Naples at the Capodimonte Museum; while, the disciple on the left shows evident affinities with the figure of the shepherd, also on the left, of the Adoration of the Shepherds in Turin at Palazzo Madama (see B. Nicolson, Caravaggism in Europe , 1989, vol. I, p. 241). Solved with a singular scenic effect of light and at the same time intimate and mystical in the attitude and faces of the protagonists of the evangelical episode, the Supper at Emmaus offered here interprets in a modern key the passage narrated by Luke (XXIV, 30-31) and is proof of the success of the theme treated several times in the seventeenth century starting from Caravaggio and his imitators  because it is suitable to be placed both on the walls of a palace and on those of convent refectories.

The present work by the Caravaggist Matthias Stomer is notable for the grandiosity of its composition, combined with outstanding painterly execution, revealing the full extent of Stomer's artistic skill. The emphatic gestures, the expressive faces with their wrinkled, leathery skin and the close proximity of the figures, transform this monumental painting into a vivid representation of the biblical episode of the Supper at Emmaus, in which the moment of surprise is given prominence. The Supper at Emmaus is one of the most important subjects employed during the Catholic Counter-Reformation, which, fuelled by the Council of Trent, introduced a new religious policy and affirmed the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Stomer adheres closely to the text of the Gospel of St Luke (Luke 24:30-31), which tells how two disciples encountered Christ on their way to Emmaus, a village near Jerusalem, but did not immediately recognise him. When they reached Emmaus, they urged him to stay and eat with them. During the supper, Christ took the bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to distribute it. It was only then that the disciples' eyes were opened, and they understood that he was the Risen Christ. The disciple leaning forward casts a strong shadow on the table, which is covered with a variety of objects, using a form of naturalism that was much appreciated by viewers of the time. As Christ blesses the bread, the disciple on the left, visible from behind, is about to leap up from his chair, a motif inspired by Caravaggio's (1571–1610) early depiction of the Supper at Emmaus, which was commissioned by Ciriaco Mattei in 1601 and is now in the National Gallery in London (inv. no. NG 172, see Fig. 1). Caravaggio, who had introduced into painting the use of chiaroscuro - the dramatic representation of light and shadow, and an extremely realistic depiction of saints, made a deep impression on painters from the Netherlands in particular. Stomer also belonged to the circle of Caravaggists in Rome. This impressive painting offers an exciting interpretation of a theme that was highly valued by Caravaggio and his followers. Stomer himself, who in addition to historical and mythological subjects mainly painted religious motifs, and in particular scenes from the life of Christ, took up the theme of Christ at Emmaus several times around 1633 to 1640 during his stay in Naples and afterwards when he was in Palermo, systematically exploring the potential of different lighting effects. An early version, created around 1635–30, is now in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples (inv. no. Q197), while another is in the Musée de Grenoble (inv. no. MG82, see Fig. 2). Whereas 20th century scholarship worked on the assumption that the painting offered here was produced in Rome around 1620–1632 or in Naples around 1633–1639 (see literature), more recent research postulates that it was painted around 1640 during Stomer's Sicilian period. Active in Sicily between 1640 and 1643, Stomer received more generous patronage than ever before, and this period proved to be the most illustrious of his entire career. Typical of the monumental works of this creative phase are the careful distribution of the figures on the picture surface and the use of a broad colour palette, enlivened by a rich impasto accentuation of the faces and hands of the main figures. Stomer’s interest in the art of Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) is likely to have had a major influence at this time. Indeed, in the version offered here, Stomer seems to be consciously striving for great clarity and monumentality. In this case, Willem Swanenburg's (1500–1612) engraving after Rubens' "The Supper at Emmaus" from 1611 (Rijksmuseum, inv. no. RP-P-OB-103.683, see fig. 3) may have served as a source of inspiration. The details that most caught Stomer's eye in Rubens' composition were the head of Christ, the background figure of the servant holding a plate, the motif of the heavy cloak hanging over the shoulders of the disciple seated on the right, and the elaborate hairstyle of the disciple on the other side of the table. Stomer very skilfully transposed these elements into his own naturalistic style. The Utrecht School, a high-calibre source of European Caravaggism, drew its strength from Rome, where Hendrick ter Brugghen (1588–1629), Dirk van Baburen (1595–1624) and Gerrit van Honthorst (1592–1656) studied the master's art. Matthias Stomer, who was one of the most important Dutch painters active in Italy in the first half of the 17th century, also travelled to Rome to study Caravaggio's art. He probably received his training in Utrecht, as the influence of the Utrecht painters Abraham Bloaemart (1564–1651) and Gerrit van Honthorst on his œuvre leads us to assume that Matthias Stomer was a pupil of theirs. By 1630 at the latest, he had travelled to Rome, and is known to have been around thirty years old at the time. Originally travelling to Italy only to study, Stomer never returned to the Netherlands and eventually settled in northern Italy. "The Supper at Emmaus" is remarkable for the ease with which Matthias Stomer combined his fidelity to Caravaggio's naturalism with his sensitivity to the brio of Rubens' great Baroque style. The painting is an outstanding example of how the last of the great Caravaggists was able to achieve this synthesis with complete mastery and palpable self-confidence. The painting is archived under nr. 229064 in the RKD, The Hague, as an original work by Matthias Stomer. * The full tax is charged on this item marked * in the auction catalogue, i.e. VAT is charged on the sum of the bid price plus the surcharge for those items. Man weiß jetzt, dass Stomer ab spätestens August 1635 bis Juli 1638 dort lebte (siehe Marije Osnabrugge, New Documents for Matthias Stom in Naples, in: The Burlington Magazine, 1331, 2014, S. 107f.). We thank Professor Riccardo Lattuada for confirming this attribution after viewing the work live. The scholar refers the painting to the painter's Sicilian period, between 1640 and 1650. The work, unpublished and of great visual impact, finds a compelling comparison with the one preserved in Karlsruhe, Staatliche Kunsthalle (B. Nicolson, < i>Caravaggism in Europe, Turin 1990, cat. 1526) and with that preserved in a private collection (ibidem, cat. 1521). The subject, of ambiguous identification, would seem refer to the culture of the Utrecht school, in which everyday themes and naturalistic depictions were disguised as classical and literary iconography, with a satirical and parodic intent. In this case a portrait of an elderly woman, rendered with brutal realism in her merciless old age, is enriched by iconographic attributes (the urn, the wooden wand) which suggest an identification with the mythical Artemisia, wife of Mausolus.

Bibliografia di riferimento: M. Adoration of the Magi

    Est: €80,000 - €120,000

Oil on canvas cm. 115x163 Due to its historical and artistic importance, the work is subject to a notification preventing its export from Italy by the Italian State. The biography of Matthias Stom, better known as Stomer, still has many obscure sides, starting with the date and place of his birth and death. What is certain is that he traveled extensively, following a route that at first, around 1630, was the canonical one from Holland (probably Utrecht) to Rome, and then became anomalous, from Rome to Sicily, transiting of course through Naples, not excluding a possible but still hypothetical late ascent to Lombardy, where his public works are preserved that can be dated to the middle of the century. Each of these passages left a trace in his painting, which, while drawing distantly from Caravaggio and more directly from Ter Bruggen, Baburen, Ribera and especially Honthorst, was powerfully personal and very recognizable. No less complex is the task of defining a chronology within his catalog, mainly because of the absolute dearth of dated works, but also because of the substantial absence of a clear evolutionary trajectory. The superb painting presented here constitutes a truly distinctive example of Stom's predilection for nocturnal settings by artificial light, as well as his renowned virtuosity in the use of chiaroscuro and control of luministic effects, accompanied by the use of a rich and contrasting color palette. In the area of sacred painting Stom had far fewer opportunities to try his hand at the Adoration of the Magi than at the Adoration of the Shepherds, a subject among the most recurrent in his production. In our painting, too, his decided preference for very close half-figure compositions is confirmed, in which the protagonists in the foreground of the scene are invested by a light that has its radiating center in the group of the Madonna and Child, while the figures behind, in contrast, are immediately swallowed up by half-light and darkness. An artifice already experimented at length by Jacopo Bassano, which is linked to the symbolic value inherent in the dialectic between light and shadow and which Stom regularly adopts in his Adorations of the Shepherds. It is precisely with many of the latter that the most stringent comparisons are found within the painter's corpus: from the one in the Lichtenstein Museum in Vienna to the one in the Capodimonte Museum in Naples, to the grandiose, full-figure one on deposit at the Regional Gallery of Sicily from the Municipality of Monreale.

Matthias Stomer (Amersfoort, 1600 – Sicilia, dopo il 1650) San Gerolamo

    Est: €9,500 - €13,000

Bibl.: A. MATTHIAS STOM OU STOMER (1600-1650)

ECCE HOMO – DIE VERSPOTTUNG CHRISTI Öl auf Leinwand. 42,5 x 72,2 cm. (1290387) (11) Matthias Stomer the Elder, actually „Matthias Stom“, ca. 1600 – ca. 1650 ECCE HOMO – THE MOCKING OF CHRISTOil on canvas. 42.5 x 72.2 cm. We would like to thank Prof Nicola Spinosa for his kind advice regarding the attribution of the painting. The painting in pronounced landscape format, and like most of the pictures from the painter’s oeuvre, the drama of the scene is affected by his fantastic direction of light. The composition of the present painting is very similar to another work by the artist with the same subject held at the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, California, USA. There, the seated figure of Christ is shown in almost the same way, but the candlelight is unobscured. This similar example is dated between 1633 and ca. 1639, a timeframe, which should also apply to the present painting. Notes 1: According to Nicola Spinosa: the figure of the young man with the hat on the left is identical to the one on the canvas with the flagellated Christ, which was part of the Koelliker Collection in Milan before going to the Voena & de Robilant Gallery in London and being exhibited in the exhibition “Caravaggio and the Painters of the North” at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid in 2016. DAS ABENDMAHL ZU EMMAUS Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 59 x 78 cm. In vergoldetem geschnitzten Holzrahmen. Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Gianni Papi vom 2. Juni 2018, Florenz, in Kopie. A copy of the expert’s report by Gianni Papi from 2 June 2018, Florence, is enclosed. The central character is staged by stark lighting as is typical for other scenes by Stomer in line with contemporary trends of Caravaggism and chiaroscuro and also present in compositions such as the Adoration of the Shepherds or Jesus and the Adulteress or The Flagellation of Christ.

TOBIAS UND DER ENGEL Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 147 x 195 cm. In dekorativem vergoldeten Rahmen. Rest.
