Georges van der Straeten Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, b. 1856 - d. 1928

Georges Van der Straeten was a Belle Epoque sculptor born in Ghent, Belgium, on December 21, 1856. He studied under the Neo-Baroque sculptor Jef Lambeaux (1852-1908). In 1883, at the twenty-seven years old, Van der Straeten moved to Paris. While living in Paris he befriended Jean Marie Constantin Joseph "Jan" van Beers, a fellow painter and son of the Romantic poet Jan van Beers. He lived at 9 Hoche Avenue, Paris. Van der Straeten showed at his first Paris Salon in 1885 and continued to show until 1912. He won many awards for his work, including the silver medal at the 1900 World's Fair, Paris and a knight of the Legion of Honor in 1903. Van der Straeten's figures are detailed and inspired by the French artist Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) and similar in style to the Italian sculptor Emmanuel Villanis (1858-1914). The work is Art Nouveau with an emphasis on the figure. His works have been produced in large numbers by French foundries Paris Bronzes Society, Pinedo and by ceramsist Friedrich Goldscheider. The artist died in Ghent in 1928.

    Est: €300 - €400

GEORGES VAN DER STRAETEN (Belgium, 1856-1941). "Bust of a young man". Patinated bronze on marble base. Presents signature and seal. Measurements: 19,5 x 10 x 8 cm. Georges Van der Straeten worked initially as a lawyer; from 1882, he was a student of the sculptors Jef Lambeaux and Gustave Kasteleyn (1848-1900). In 1883, he left Ghent and moved to Paris, where he exhibited at the salons of the Société des Artistes Français from 1885 to 1912. Among his friends were the Belgian painters Jan van Beers and Rik Wouters. He received several awards, including a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle; in 1903 he was made a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. As an artist of the Belle Époque, he stood at the turning point between Neoclassicism and Art Nouveau. His works testify to his great technical skill and the high quality of his work; his favorite materials were bronze, chryselephantine and terracotta. He created numerous sculptures and busts of graceful and seductive fantasy figures of young Parisian girls in the "endearing style of 18th century sculptors".

19th Cent. Georges Van Der Straeten Bronze Sculpture

DESCRIPTION: Antique Bronze Sculpture by Georges Van Der Straeten (Belgian, 1856-1928). Depicts a young smiling female bust figure, atop an onyx marble plinth base. With "Van Der Straeten" signature on verso and 'Bellman and Ivey's [Appointed by the Queen]' British foundry stamp. Georges Van der Straeten (1856-1941) was a celebrated Belgian sculptor, who was famous for producing delicate busts and figures in plaster and bronze. Van der Straeten worked mainly in the Belle Epoque style. In 1883 he moved to Paris, where he exhibited at the Louvre’s Salon exhibition from 1885 until 1912. Foundry mark: English Bellman & Ivey firm originally began with Vincent Bellman (c. 1796-1860). Upon Bellman’s death in 1860, the business was renamed Bellman and Ivey, under the direction of John Ivey (1794-1874). In the 1880s and 1890s, the firm exhibited and sold sculpture in its premises on Piccadilly and then Old Bond Street, London, England. This may have been the result of the influence of Charles B. Carter (1856), a dealer in sculpture, who was associated with the business in the 1890s.
