ARTHUR STRASSER (Adelsberg, Germany, 1854-1927). "The snake charmer". Cold enameled bronze. Signed, titled and with function stamp. With plaque Médaille Beaux-Arts, Paris. Measurements: 48 x 30 x 21 cm. Arthur Strasser gives us the image of a snake charmer who sounds a flute or a pungi to attract the animal. The young man, completely dedicated to his task, wears traditional clothing based on a wide tunic and a turban on his head. The snake, which could well be a cobra, twists on itself in a dancing posture. Technically, the laborious work of the charmer stands out, captured with a precision, naturalism and expressiveness that denote not only mastery on the part of the sculptor, but also a careful study of the natural. Arthur Strasser was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus (1886-91 and 1907-27) and of the Munich and Vienna Secessions (1898-1900). In 1896 he created a first model that was exhibited in Berlin and at the Vienna Künstlerhaus Exhibition of 1896, for which he received the Reichel Prize. The tradition of small Viennese bronze sculpture dates back to the middle of the 19th century, with as many as fifty craftsmen living in the capital at the turn of the century. Several foundries began to specialize in the so-called "cold enameling" technique. Several layers were applied to the raw bronze, resulting in a fine, shiny finish charged with naturalism. However, it was important to apply this film when the bronze was still hot, as the temperature contrast contributed to the permanence of the color, which remained fixed to the metal. Since it was not fired, following the usual process, it became known as "cold enameling".

By doing so, he perfectly corresponded to the prevailing taste of Orientalism at that time. The present full round bust of painted terracotta was produced in the 1890s by Goldscheider in Vienna. Offered bust presents the Oriental with closed eyes wearing a green garment and a brown headdress. The bust particularly impresses with the fine physiognomy and the vivid expression of the Oriental as well as the flowing drapery. Condition: The bust is in a good condition with minor signs of age and wear. In places overpainted bumps, also along the lower base. Coloring partially with fine craquelure and scratches. Chips to the base. The height measures 45.1 cm. Friedrich Goldscheider (1845-1897) Friedrich Goldscheider is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the history of European ceramics. He founded his manufactory in Vienna under the name ‘Manufaktur Friedrich Goldscheider’ in 1885. His pieces matched the spirit of the time during the period of around 1900 and particularly in the 1920s. His pieces were well known internationally; they were made of faience, terracotta, bronze and alabaster and represented historicist, art nouveau, art deco and orientalist styles. The Goldscheider family emigrated to England and to the US in 1938 and started new ceramic manufactories there. Friedrich’s son, Walter Goldscheider, returned to Vienna in 1950. He had to shut down the manufactory for economic reasons. He sold the license to a German company called ‘Carstens’. In 1987, Friedrich’s grandchild restarted the family business under the name ‘Stoob’. Arthur Strasser (1854-1927) The sculptor and painter was student at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1871-1875 and attended the class of Viktor Tilgner since 1874. In the years 1881 and 1883 he was able to stay in Paris, thanks to scholarships. Here he also tried his hand as a painter. Strasser joined the naturalistic tendency, with his polychromatic terracottas’ and bronzes, he achieved a high degree of naturalness. From 1899 to 1919 he was director of a specialized class for sculpture at the Vienna Arts and Crafts School. During his life Strasser was honored with several awards, including the newcomer price in 1873 and a medal at the Paris World's Fair in 1900.
