G. Strutt' and indistinctly dated (lower left), the second and third signed 'J. G. Strutt' (lower left and lower right), each 16 x 22 cm., a set of three (3). Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 11 April 1997, lot 81 (£4,500 hammer). Private Collection, UK. Note: Strutt left England in the early 1830s and spent two decades in Austria, Switzerland and Italy, before returning home in 1851. He is believed to have been a pupil of John Constable (1776-1837), with his work often compared to that of his elder contemporary. Here, his use of thick, white impasto powerfully evokes the glittering reflection of the Italian sunlight on the water.

Jacob George Strutt (1784 _ 1867) British portrait and landscape painter and engraver in the manner of John Constable. Strutt was born in Colchester, in Essex, England and moved to Lausanne in Switzerland in about 1830. With his son Arthur he travelled in France and Switzerland from 1835 to 1837, and later to Italy; they established a studio in Rome. He returned to England in 1851, and died in Rome in 1864[or 1867. At the Royal Academy he exhibited from 1822 to 1852; _ in 1822 and 1823 he showed portraits, but from 1824 until 1831 showed only woodland or forest scenes. Original etching dated 1825.
