LAWRENCE (1769-1803) OR THOMAS SULLY (1783-1872), ATTRIBUTED, MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF MAJOR BYRD GEORGE (RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, 1768-1836), watercolor, depicting a handsome gentleman with sandy-colored hair, blue eyes, and a fashionable high-collared jacket with a cravat and white collared shirt. No signature located. Retains the likely original fitted case, and a hanging tag which reads "Major / Byrd / George. / War / 1812" with a faint "L. Sully" written in pencil on the backside. Housed in the original rose gold frame that tested as 10K gold fineness, having a small window on the backside showing woven locks of the sitter's hair. Circa 1815. 3" x 2 1/2" OA, 3 1/2" x 2 7/8" case. Catalogue Note: This portrait was lent by "The Misses Boykin" to The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for a 1941 exhibition, the catalogue from the exhibition attributes the work to Lawrence Sully. Major Byrd George (1768-1836) lived in Richmond / Henrico Co., VA for most of his life. His son, John George, married Anna Burton (1808-1855) whose childhood portrait is in this sale (lot 2365) along with other related miniature portraits from the same family.

Her father, Robert Burton, was business partners with James Brown Sr. (1762-1841). After Robert Burton died, James Brown Sr. married Anna Pitifield Burton becoming this subject's step father. A collection of four publications focused on the life and artistic output of American portraitist Thomas Sully (1783-1872). The assembly includes a copy of Mr. Sully, Portrait Painter by Monroe H. Fabian, published for the National Portrait Gallery by the Smithsonian Institution Press in 1983, which is a hardcover volume with its original dust jacket. Also included is The Life and Works of Thomas Sully (1783-1872) by Edward Biddle and Mantle Fielding, published by Garnier and Company in 1969 as a reprint of the 1921 edition; this navy blue cloth-bound volume features white library call numbers on the spine and contains photogravure plates and a facsimile of the artist's manuscript register. The third item is a limited edition softcover reprint of Sully's Hints to Young Painters, published by the Reinhold Publishing Corporation in 1965, featuring an introduction by Faber Birren. Provenance: Page 20 of the June 1966 Published book The Smith-Spilman Lineage by Malcolm L. Melville. Stated on page 20, "Flora HillPainted from memory by Thomas Sully." On page 9, "Flora Hill, born February 7, 1842 at Baltimore, Maryland. She died August 13, 1847 at the age of five years, six months, and four days. There is a portrait of Flora Hill, which hung on the wall in the home of Emily, A. Spillman in Washington, D. C., Which the author has seen upon numerous occasions. It was the work of Thomas Sully, a popular portraitist of the times and friend of her mother, Anne. Sully painted it from memory and presented it to the mother after floras death. It is a very beautiful, ethereal painting. Emily Spilman bequeathed the picture to her nephew, Hugh, M. Melville, of Sun City, Calif. Thomas Sully (1783 - 1872) was active/lived in Pennsylvania / England. Thomas Sully is known for Portrait, historical, and landscape painting. A teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Thomas Sully became one of the foremost early 19th-century portrait painters, known for painting pretty faces on his subjects, often disregarding reality. He was the son of English actors and was born in Horncastle, Lincolnshire. He came to Philadelphia in 1792 when he was nine years old. Sully showed early drawing talent and first studied with his older brother, Lawrence, a miniature painter. To earn money, he tried unsuccessfully to have a career in insurance but then turned full time to painting and was able to be critiqued by Gilbert Stuart in Boston. He embraced Stuart's interest in classical styles, but favored pretty colors and opaque and glossy surfaces. Like Stuart, his subjects appear heroic and seem to have a sense of purpose. In 1801, he moved with Lawrence's family to Virginia, but Lawrence died, so Thomas cared for the family and married the widow two years later. In 1808, accepting an attractive offer from a patron, he moved to Philadelphia for the remainder of his life excepting the new two years when a syndicate of patrons sent him to England to paint and study. He returned with a copy of an Old Master painting for each patron. His twenty-three year old daughter, Blanch, accompanied him to England where he did a portrait of Queen Victoria, a commission filled from a request through the Philadelphia chapter of the Society of the Sons of Saint George. Blanch substituted for the Queen in many of the sittings, and even wore the British crown, the only American ever to have this distinction. She also modeled in Victoria's state robes. The Queen was extremely pleased with the portrait, which was finished in Philadelphia. In Philadelphia, Sully shared a studio with Charles Bird King, portrait painter, and taught at the Academy.

PORTRAIT OF MAJOR GENERAL WINFIELD SCOTT BY THOMAS SULLY, C. 1817.

Thomas Sully (1783-1877). "Brevet Major General Winfield Scott, c. 1817." Oil on canvas, 43 1/4 x 33 1/4 inches, within custom, carved and gilded frame by Julius Lowey, c. 1950. Winfield Scott (1786-1866) attended William and Mary College briefly and studied law until obtaining a commission as captain in the Regiment of Light Artillery in 1808. With the onset of the War of 1812, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel, July 1812 and served on the Niagara frontier, where he was captured, paroled and later exchanged. He then participated in the taking of Fort George, where he was wounded, and at Upholds Creek; was promoted to brigadier general, March 1814 and as a brigade commander, was largely instrumental in American successes in the battles of Chippewa and Lundys Lane (where he was seriously wounded); for his valor, was brevetted major general on 25 July 1814. Due to the severity of his wounds, he remained on the East Coast on convalescence for the balance of the war. In 1815, he took a leave of absence to study French military systems, arriving after Waterloo. While there, he probably took the opportunity to have the full-dress uniform of a major general cut and embroidered for him (which he was entitled to wear with brevet rank), as Parisian embroiderers were considered the most skilled in Europe at the time; it is known that an embroidered swordbelt was also made for him in France at the same time. Returning to the United States in 1816, Scott was presented a sword from the state of New York, as originally approved by unanimous vote of its legislature in October 1814, recognizing his heroism and leadership during the Niagara campaign of that year. Its gilt-hilt was made by New York goldsmith John Targee and it was presented to him at New York's City Hall on Evacuation Day (25 NOV 1816). The sword, with its distinctive eagle pommel and downturned counterguard can be seen belted on his left hip in the Sully portrait. Thus, this portrait and also the William Rush bust of him showing him dressed in an identical uniform--both previously assigned a circa date of 1814 by art historians--were almost certainly done in 1817 or shortly thereafter. In March 1817, Scott married Maria DeHart Mayo, daughter of John Mayo, a wealthy engineer and businessman from Virginia and this portrait may have been a commission paid by his new father-in-law to welcome Scott into the family. In the background can be seen the Falls of the Niagara at night, with a flame-lit sky overhead--symbolizing the famous night battle at Lundy's Lane where Scott was gravely wounded yet earned his brevet commission and accolades from the American public. PROVENANCE: By descent in the Scott family; sold by his granddaughter in 1906; subsequently acquired by Jay Altmayer from Argosy Gallery some time prior to 1950. The work was restored and the impressive gilt composition frame made for it by Julius Lowey shortly thereafter. Sold as lot 87 in the Christie's Jay P. Altmayer Family Collection sale of 19 January 2017, whence acquired. CONDITION: Lined; the painting was recently conserved, during which inpainting from c. 1950 was removed, notably in the sitter's lower right waist area. The decision was made to not overpaint again and instead, to show what remains of the original artist's work "as found." The Lowey frame is in excellent condition, being recently cleaned, during which some small areas with losses to gesso or gilding were restored. This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made. ADDENDUM: The frame is an early 19th century frame original to the portrait, but was restored by Julius Lowey in the 1950s and subsequently small portions of gilding and gesso damage or loss were restored by gilder Bernard Sellem, whose report accompanies the work.
