Marc-Aurèle DE FOY SUZOR-COTÉ (1869-1937) Picking poppies Oil on canvas Signed lower right 128 x 162 cm Framed PROVENANCE : Édouard Drouot Collection (1859-1945), then by descent to the current owner. Édouard Drouot was a French artist, best known as an Academist and Realist sculptor. NOTICE A major figure in Canadian painting at the turn of the 20th century, Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Coté was one of a number of artists who helped define a national pictorial identity, between a European academic heritage and the emergence of a North American sensibility. In "La cueillette des coquelicots", Suzor-Coté deploys a large-format composition in which the human figure blends harmoniously into a luminous landscape. True to her approach, the artist favors a supple, vibrant touch, attentive to the effects of light and atmospheric modulation. The scene, centered on a rural activity, testifies to an interest in everyday life and the relationship between man and nature, a recurring theme in his work. Trained in Europe, notably in Paris, Suzor-Coté remained influenced by academic training, while evolving towards a freer style. His work is thus part of a continuity that links the pioneers of Canadian painting such as Cornelius Krieghoff and Paul Peel, while heralding the atmospheric research of Maurice Cullen and James Wilson Morrice. Suzor-Coté's attention to light and landscape structuring also prefigured certain preoccupations of the Group of Seven, embodied by Lawren Harris, A. Y. Jackson and Tom Thomson, as well as Emily Carr. However, unlike the latter, he retains an attachment to the figure and a certain narrative. His work also contrasts with the more radical developments of Canadian modernism, represented by Paul-Émile Borduas and Jean-Paul Riopelle, or with the plastic research of Jack Bush. Conversely, she shares with Clarence Gagnon and Marc-Aurèle Fortin an attachment to the Quebec landscape and its cultural specificities. Finally, the contemplative, poetic dimension of her compositions finds a later echo in the work of Jean Paul Lemieux, although the latter adopts a very different formal language.
