(Published 1838). Titled center margin and printed lower left margin: Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon. F.R.S. F.L.S. Watermarked J. Whatman 1838. Intaglio and watercolor on paper. Image - 22-7/8” H x 34-3/4” W. Sheet - 26-5/8” H x 40” W. Sight - 24 1/2" H x 37" W. Framed - 40" H x 52 1/2" W. Provenance: The estate of John Donnelly, Nashville, Tennessee. Note: In about 1820, John James Audubon declared an ambitious intent to paint every bird in North America and to fund it by selling groups of printed plates of his paintings to subscribers. He insisted on the book’s large format -- printed on the largest handmade sheets available at that time -- in order to portray the birds in their actual size and natural habitat. The result was the ornithological masterpiece, THE BIRDS OF AMERICA, Havell Edition, published periodically 1826-1838. There were 435 different prints of 497 bird species and an estimated 180 complete sets were produced; today about 110 (some sources say 120) remain intact as bound book volumes owned by museums, institutions and private individuals. - source: The Audubon Price Guide by Ron Flynn. John Swan was born and raised in Maine and studied at the University of New Hampshire. In the 1980s Swan was painting local rural landscapes until he completed a fly fishing painting that appeared on the cover of "Gray's Sporting Journal". This early success with a sporting scene ensured that hunting and fishing subjects would be an integral part of Swan's work in the years to come. Swan is regarded as one of the foremost sporting and wildlife artists of his generation. Among his distinctions are one-man shows at the American Museum of Fly Fishing, the King Gallery of New York, and the Stephen O'Brien Jr. Fine Arts Gallery of Boston. His awards include being named Artist of the Year three times by the Atlantic Salmon Federation as well as being the Ducks Unlimited International Artist of the Year in 1987. He has illustrated numerous books including Joseph Bate's classic "Atlantic Salmon Fishing" and Thomas McGuanes's anthology "Live Water".
