Audienz beim Großwesir am Ufer des Nils. Aquarell und Deckfarben über Feder in Grau, alt aufgezogen und hinter ein Passepartout montiert. 24 x 38 cm. Signiert und datiert "Swebach 1811". Das ursprünglich aus der Sammlung des Marquis René d'Andigné stammende Aquarell ist eine Vorzeichnung für eine der Porzellanplatten aus dem sogenannten "Service Égyptien" der Manufaktur Sèvres. Swebach entwarf für dieses Teeservice, das im Jahr 1810 von der Kaiserin Josephine in Auftrag gegeben wurde, etwa 40 bis 50 Kompositionen. Bereits in den Jahren 1811-1812 wurde das umfangreiche Service der Auftraggeberin in das Château de Malmaison bei Paris geliefert. - Nach seiner Ausbildung bei dem Maler Michel H. Duplessis arbeitete Swebach in Paris, wo er sich eine Reputation als Pferde- und Militärmaler erwarb. Von 1802 bis 1813 war er der Premier Peintre an der Porzellanmanufaktur in Sèvres, wo er für die Dekorationen verschiedener bedeutender Service verantwortlich war. In dieser Funktion entwickelte er auch diese vielfigurige Komposition für das Service im "Gout Egyptien", ein Thema, das sich dieser Zeit größter Beliebtheit erfreute. - Provenienz: Sammlung Marquis René d'Andigné (1862-1929). Cadre en pitchpin ABE (Petites rousseurs). Biographie : Jacques-François Swebach nait à Metz en 1769, baigne très tôt dans le milieu artistique. Son père se charge de sa formation avant qu’il parte s’établir à Paris. Là-bas, il commence sa carrière artistique à 14 ans en entrant dans l’atelier de Michel Hamon Dupleissis. Il participe au salon de la Correspondance et au salon de la Jeunesse. Il profite du renouvellement de la scène artistique qu’amène la révolution pour se faire un nom. Il se fait remarquer par l’éditeur Pierre Didot l’aîné qui lui confie un recueil de gravures intitulé Tableaux historiques de la Révolution Française. Il produit surtout des toiles militaires mais se cantonne pas à ce thème et produit des représentations qui traduisent son goût pour les chevaux et le paysage. Il répondra à une commande pour la résidence impériale de la Malmaison. Enfin, il se fera un nom en collaborant à partir de 1802 avec la manufacture de Sèvres avant de partir à Saint-Pétersbourg en 1814 pour collaborer avec la manufacture impériale de porcelaines. Il a formé de nombreux artistes et aura une influence durable.

(Metz 1769–1825 Paris) An extensive landscape with a stagecoach, signed and dated lower right: Swebach. 1821, oil on canvas, 52 x 111.5 cm, framed Provenance: Collection of Louis-Philippe Duke d’Orleans (1773–1850), later King of the French (1830); with Richard Green, London; sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 12 December 1978, lot 132; Private collection, Upper Austria Praised as the ‘Wouwerman of our time’ by contemporary art critics, Jacques François Joseph Swebach-Desfontaines depicts a brilliantly lit genre scene in the present work. The scene is set in the southern French countryside against an extensive mountainous landscape. As expected from his byname, the artist was lauded for his accuracy in depicting horses and completed works in genres as military convoys, battle scenes, skirmishes, horse markets and hunting scenes. The present genre painting is an exception to the rule within the body of works of the artist. Often, they are characterised by small groups of figures and interlaced with a humorous touch, as seen in the present painting. The centrally placed stagecoach is where the story unfolds. The gentleman in the green velvet coat on the white horse is in discussion with either the couple in the carriage or the high-hatted coachman riding the harnessed horse. On his right, a glimpse of a light-green-coated-figure is visible. Whether this figure is about to enter the coach or open the door for the passengers is uncertain. Caught up in his dialogue, the gentleman completely ignores the peasant’s family trying to sell him their fruits and harvest. Taught in the profession by his father François-Louis Swebach in Metz, the young artist continued his training with Michel Duplessis in Paris. He executed works in the above-mentioned genres both in painting and engraving. Between 1791 and 1823, Swebach-Desfontaines exhibited at the Salon, where he received a medal in 1810. Besides his depiction of horses, the artist was renowned for his attention to detail and interest in narrative, of which the present work attests. Between 1802 and 1813, Swebach-Desfontaines was Premier Peintre at the Sèvres porcelain factory and from 1815 to 1820, the artist worked for Tsar Alexander I as Premier Peintre at the imperial porcelain factory in Saint Petersburg, from where he continued to send works to the Salon.

LANDSCHAFT MIT FIGUREN UNTER STÜRMISCHEM HIMMEL Öl auf Holz. 53 x 61 cm. In vergoldetem Prunkrahmen. In weiter bergiger Landschaft unterhalb einer sandigen Anhöhe, die linksseitig mit zwei großen alten weitverzweigten Bäumen bewachsen ist, ein breiter Weg, auf dem sich ein Pferdegespann mit zwei Figuren und eine Hirtin mit ihrer Herde von Kühen und Ziegen begegenen. Nach rechts eine weite Feldlandschaft in beige-brauner Farbigkeit vor grauem Hintergrund. Der hohe Himmel teils mit dunkelgrauen Gewitterwolken, auf ein stürmisches Wetter hindeutend, stellenweise jedoch hellblau aufklarender Himmel mit einigen kleinen fliegenden Vögeln. Malerei bei der die Landschaft in überwiegend beige-brauner Farbigkeit wiedergegeben ist, der bewegte grau-blaue Himmel jedoch besonders hervorgehoben wird. (1351127) (18)
