Charles Sykes (1875-1950), gilt bronze sculpture of the 'Spirit of Ecstasy', Rolls-Royce, H 69 cm The 'Spirit of Ecstasy' is the name of the mascot that has graced the radiator grille of the Rolls-Royce since 1911. The mascot is a design by Charles Sykes, based on actress and model Eleanor Thornton. As on the original 1911 design, those same graceful draperies, elegant style and angelic features are faithfully preserved in this highly-detailed and hand-finished Limited Edition of the Rolls-Royce' Spirit of Ecstasy' Showroom Statues. With the approach of the 100th anniversary of the creation of Charles Sykes' legendary mascot design, a limited edition of 50 statues of the Rolls-Royce' Spirit of Ecstasy' Showroom Statues was created. Standing 69 cm high with a wingspan of 36 cm, this exquisitely detailed sculpture has been created using an original 1930s Rolls-Royce showroom statuette as a key point of reference. The model's draperies and skin tones have received particular sympathetic treatment, and the concave base has a distinctive and very attractive textured finish with delicate cross-hatching, highlighting the original signature. Reproduction of the original 'Spirit of Ecstasy' Limited edition of 50

Seeger, Whitby. The sculptor, painter and graphic designer Charles Robinson Sykes is perhaps best known for the design of the Spirit of Ecstasy figure used on Rolls-Royce cars, which he executed in 1911. Born in Yorkshire to an artistic family, in 1898 Sykes won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London. He then established a successful career in the capital as both a fine and commercial artist. After 1911, building on his success of his work for Rolls-Royce, Sykes was asked to design the gold and silver cups for Ascot, and also received other commissions for ceremonial gold and silverware, as well as numerous trophies and medals. After the First World War he began to focus more on the commercial projects, works signed with the pseudonym ‘Rilette’. Over the next few years he produced numerous fashion drawings which filled the pages of the Sunday Dispatch and the monthly covers of the magazine Woman.

            Est: €6,000 - €9,000

Charles Robinson Sykes (1875-1950) British Spirit of Ecstasy (1911) silver plated sculpture on marble base signed h:56  w:33.25 d:34 cm. Provenance: Private Collection Lord Montagu, a keen and wealthy car enthusiast, commissioned sculptor Charles Robinson Sykes to design a mascot for his 1909 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. Sykes produced the figure of a young woman in a windswept robe, one finger held to her lips. Versions of the sculpture are known as The Whisperer and, as used on Montagu's Rolls Royce, the Spirit of Ecstasy. The model was apparently Eleanor Velasco Thornton, who was employed as Montagu's secretary and is said to have had a daughter with him. She was with Montagu en route to India when their ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat in 1915 and she was among those killed.

He was commissioned to produce the mascot by Lord Montagu in 1909 and the iconic statue was modelled as a beautiful young woman in flowing robes. The model for the mascot was probably Eleanor Thornton, secretary to Claude Johnson of the Automobile Club. Thornton became Sykes' favourite model, posing for many of his sketches and paintings.
