Lord Montagu, a keen and wealthy car enthusiast, commissioned sculptor Charles Robinson Sykes to design a mascot for his 1909 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. Sykes produced the figure of a young woman in a windswept robe, one finger held to her lips. Versions of the sculpture are known as The Whisperer and, as used on Montagu's Rolls Royce, the Spirit of Ecstasy. The model was apparently Eleanor Velasco Thornton, who was employed as Montagu's secretary and is said to have had a daughter with him. She was with Montagu en route to India when their ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat in 1915 and she was among those killed.
