    Aug. 30, 2026

Arthur Szyk (1894-1951) Polish/American, (5) Framed Illustration Prints

    Est: $80 - $120

Arthur Szyk (1894-1951) Polish/American, (5) Framed Illustration Prints. Part of Szyk's "The Visual History of Nations" Series (10 nations total), originally printed from 1949 to 1951. Includes France, Poland, Israel, Canada, and the U.S.S.R. Labels with prior gallery information on the back of each one.  Overall Size: 15 1/8 x 13 3/4 in. Sight Size: 7 7/8 x 6 3/8 in. Arthur Szyk was born June 3rd, 1894 in Łódź, Poland. Although his family had been culturally assimilated and did not practice Orthodox Judaism, Arthur liked drawing scenes from the Torah early on. His father sent Szyk to Paris to study at the Académie Julian in 1912. Although he was exposed to many modern trends in art, he became especially influenced by medieval illuminated manuscripts. Many of the caricatures he produced during his time at the Académie were published in the satirical magazine Śmiech (“Laughter”) that circulated in Łódź. Szyk returned to Poland in 1914 and continued his studies in Teodor Axentowicz’s class at Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. He traveled with other Polish-Jewish artists and writers to Palestine, but when World War I broke out during the visit he was conscripted into the Imperial Russian Army, fighting at the battle of Łódź in November of 1914. In 1916 Szyk married Julia Likerman, with whom he had two children. In 1919, influenced by the events of the German Revolution, he published his first book of political illustrations, and served as the artistic director of the Propaganda Department of the Polish Army during the Polish-Soviet War. In 1921 his family fled to France to escape the chaos engulfing Eastern Europe, where his reputation grew substantially, although his work was ironically criticized for perpetuating Jewish stereotypes. A series of 38 watercolors he made depicting the American Revolutionary War were exhibited at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. in 1934. From 1934 to 1936 he worked on what is considered his magnum opus, the Illustrated Haggadah, a pivotal story in Jewish history about the Exodus of the Israelites from ancient Egypt. Szyk created 48 miniature paintings for it, introducing many contemporary elements to it in response to Nazi policies in Germany. In 1937 he moved the family to London to supervise the publication of the work. When it was finally released in 1940 it was widely acclaimed for its coloring and modern translation, and became the most expensive book in the world at the time. A presentation of his paintings at the 1939 New York World’s Fair led to his family being granted safe passage to America when World War II began, eventually settling in New York City. He worked tirelessly throughout the war creating pro-Allied propaganda, which solidified much opposition to the Axis powers even before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He also produced advertisements for Coca-Cola and US Steel, and exhibited in the Brooklyn Museum, the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, and the White House. At the end of the war Szyk and his family moved to New Canaan, Connecticut. The artist returned to book illustrations, and in his final years he was a fervent supporter of equal rights for African-Americans, becoming a target of the House Un-American Activities Committee. He died of a heart attack on September 13th, 1951, and although his work had a tremendous impact on politics, advertising, and modern caricature and satire, his popularity dwindled into obscurity during the Cold War, with only a handful of exhibitions, all in the United States, since the 1990s.

    Est: $1,500 - $2,000

Arthur Szyk (1894-1951), illus. & Marc-George Mallet (1887-?) La Ronde des Déesses. Presentation Copy. Paris: La Fleur de France, 1925. First edition, limited issue, quarto; number 68 of 100 copies printed on vergé paper, from a run of 166 copies total; signed and inscribed by Mallet to the celebrated French lawyer Vincent de Moro-Giafferi, "à l'orateur éblouissant dont le verbe pathétique m'a si souvent émeu, avec mes sentiments affectnent [to the dazzling orator, whose passionate words have so often moved me, with my affection]" in purple ink on a preliminary blank; illustrated with an etched frontispiece by Szyk, protected by the original tissue guard; bound in dark brown morocco-backed marbled boards, spine gilt-lettered, marbled endpapers (light marginal toning throughout; some chips and nicks to board edges, two small dents to lower edge of morocco backing); 10 7/8 x 8 ¾ in.  This collection of Mallet's poetry features a little-known contribution by illustrator Arthur Szyk and is inscribed to the youngest lawyer ever appointed to the Parisian bar. Vincent de Moro-Giafferi (1878-1956) was a criminal defense attorney famous for his powerful speeches which often secured the acquittal of controversial clients. He is best known for his representation of Herschel Feibel Grynszpan, who assassinated German diplomat Ernst vom Rath in retaliation for Germany's persecution of the Jewish people in 1938. Moro-Giafferi's defense of Grynszpan was particularly high-profile and politically charged, as the Nazis used Rath's assassination as a pretext for initiating the horrific events of Kristallnacht.  Mallet, a writer and poet, was also a Parisian lawyer. He likely witnessed many of Moro-Giafferi's court orations personally and perhaps sympathized with his work for Grynszpan, especially considering Mallet's friendship and collaboration with the anti-Nazi Szyk.

THE HAGGADAH, Illustrated by Arthur Szyk, Edited by Cecil Roth, Jerusalem, circa 1956-1960

    Est: $200 - $800

This illustrated Passover Haggadah is a celebrated example of mid-20th-century Jewish book art, featuring the iconic work of artist Arthur Szyk. Executed by Szyk and edited by the distinguished scholar Cecil Roth, this edition was published by Massadah and Alumoth in Jerusalem, Ramat-Gan, and Tel-Aviv. Arthur Szyk was a world-renowned Polish-Jewish miniaturist and illustrator known for his intricate, manuscript-style illuminations that often incorporated Zionist and anti-fascist symbolism. This volume is distinguished by its ornate, full metal repoussé binding, likely composed of a silver-plated alloy. The front cover features a central Menorah motif within a scalloped arch, surrounded by a border decorated with the emblems of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The four corners depict significant holy sites: Rachel's Tomb, Jerusalem, the Western Wall, and the Tower of David. Hebrew inscriptions at the top and bottom read "And the Lord brought us out of Egypt" and "From slavery to freedom." The back cover displays a central motif of the Tablets of the Covenant flanked by the Lions of Judah beneath a crown, with the Hebrew title "Haggadah shel Pesach" in stylized lettering. The spine is constructed with a sturdy metal hinge. Dimensions7.00"L x 1.00"W x 8.75"H

Arthur Szyk - Manuscript of The Legend of The Nonnes Preestes Tale

    Est: -

Tale The Nonnes Preestes Tale (in Middle English; modern English: The Nun's Priest's Tale) by the 14th-century English poet and author Geoffrey Chaucer. The manuscript of the tale and its title illustration were created by Arthur Szyk (unsigned). Bound in a vellum cover with a tied ribbon, the manuscript features Szyk's elegant handwriting in black and red ink, 19 lines per page (visible pencil guidelines for the lines), initial letters in larger type, and the first letter of the tale’s title in gold, green, and red ink on the cover. An ancient English fable from Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, the story is an allegory featuring talking animals. The tale conveys a moral against pride and flattery and highlights the value of wit and wisdom over arrogance and crudeness. (The tale's name, "The Nun's Priest, " refers to the medieval custom of priests accompanying nuns in monasteries to cater to their religious and ceremonial needs, such as conducting mass and offering spiritual guidance. The tale connects its narrative to the preceding monk's tale, hence its title.) Geoffrey Chaucer (c. 1340s – October 25, 1400) An English poet, author, courtier, royal official, and diplomat, as well as a philosopher and astronomer. Known as the "Father of English Literature, " he is considered one of the greatest English poets. He is best known to the public for his masterpiece, The Canterbury Tales, which, like all his works, was written in Middle English. [35] written pages. 20 cm. Slight stains on the page edges. Condition: Good.

Frame: 15 1/8 x 13 3/4 in. Sight: 7 7/8 x 6 3/8 in. #2610 .

Faded signature in lower right corner, "SZYK." Israel Bonds came into existence after Israel's War of Independence, when the nation was critically short of economic resources. Realizing that the struggling country desperately needed financial resources, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion declared that the government bonds "must be mobilized by the Jewries of the world, and especially," he emphasized, "the Jews of the United States." Szyk's well-established love of the Land of Israel influenced his decision to create the artwork and raise funds for the newborn Jewish state. The first bond was issued in February 1951, prior to Szyk's death in September that year. Source: Israel Bonds | Invest in Israel.
