Elle s’empare de figures figées dans un espace-temps indéfinissable, pour avancer une nouvelle lecture de leurs présences et de leurs apparences. Tels des revenants, les enfants semblent surgir de mémoires et d’histoires enfouies que l’artiste réactive et réécrit. Elle leur construit une nouvelle réalité : complexe, perturbante, hypnotique. Isolés ou présentés en groupe, ils ont littéralement colonisé son univers pictural. Entre présences et absences, les personnages sont extraits de leurs environnements, de leurs contextes et de leurs repères. Ils sont ainsi propulsés au cœur de l’espace pictural : énigmatique, sombre et embarrassant. L’artiste explore l’idée de passages grâce à l’élaboration d’un royaume fragile, tenu en équilibre par une subtile combinaison de paradoxes : passé-présent, réalité-fiction, clairvoyance-cécité, lumière-obscurité. À l’intérieur, des enfants posent et rôdent… Les regards sont froids, lucides, quasi désincarnés… En engageant un jeu de masques, l’artiste cultive l’ambiguïté du genre afin d’abolir les évidences, les stéréotypes et la conformation. Ses personnages, des princes, des sorcières, des lapins, des cerfs, des fantômes, se cherchent et nous cherchent du regard. Pour cerner ses figures, l’artiste a retenu le mot prosôpon, un terme à consonance enfantine provenant du Grec ancien qui désigne à la fois le visage et le masque, mais aussi la présence, l’apparence ou la venue d’une personne. Dans cet espace-lisière, les présences nous observent gravement et silencieusement jusqu’à nous déstabiliser. Ils sont comme enfermés dans la peinture qui peut alors être comprise comme un abri duquel ils nous dévisagent à leur tour. En accentuant l’intensité des regards intérieurs, Claire Tabouret nous fait entrer dans la matière même de scènes capturées et reformulées. Au fil des toiles, elle déploie un univers chargé d’histoires, de souvenirs et de possibles projections. EN Claire Tabouret works from photographs, both personal archives and anonymous snapshots collected in the course of her research. She takes hold of figures frozen in an indefinable space-time, to put forward a new reading of their presence and appearance. Like ghosts, the children seem to emerge from buried memories and stories that the artist reactivates and rewrites. She constructs a new reality for them: complex, disturbing, hypnotic. Alone or presented in groups, they have literally colonised her pictorial universe. Between presence and absence, the characters are extracted from their environments, their contexts and their points of reference. They are thus propelled to the heart of the pictorial space: enigmatic, dark and embarrassing. The artist explores the idea of passages through the elaboration of a fragile realm, held in balance by a subtle combination of paradoxes: past-present, reality-fiction, clairvoyance-blindness, light-darkness. Inside, children pose and prowl... Their gazes are cold, lucid, almost disembodied... By engaging in a game of masks, the artist cultivates the ambiguity of gender in order to abolish the obvious, stereotypes and conformation. Her characters - princes, witches, rabbits, deer, ghosts - seek each other out and seek us out with their eyes. To define her figures, the artist has chosen the word prosôpon, a childish-sounding term from ancient Greek that designates both the face and the mask, but also the presence, appearance or arrival of a person. In this light-space, the presences observe us gravely and silently, to the point of destabilising us. They are as if enclosed in the painting, which can then be understood as a shelter from which they in turn stare back at us. By accentuating the intensity of the inner gaze, Claire Tabouret draws us into the very fabric of scenes that have been captured and reformulated. Over the course of her canvases, she unfolds a world full of stories, memories and possible projections. Julie Crenn à l’occasion de l’exposition Prosôpon, Galerie Isabelle Gounod, Paris 2013 This work is part of a body of work in which Claire Tabouret depicts groups of children (similar to the painting *Les Insoumis* from the Pinault Collection): "Although they are all in the same situation and stand united, none of the figures looks at the others, and they all gaze in a direction where they are not. It is as much Rimbaud’s ‘I is another’ as it is Sartre’s ‘Hell is other people.’” Tabouret uses expressive materials and frontal compositions that heighten the psychological intensity of the portraits. Claire TABOURET Claire Tabouret représente des figures et des paysages dans des états d’apparition et de disparition. Bien qu’elle travaille souvent (mais pas toujours) à partir d’images photographiques préexistantes liées à des récits historiques particuliers, elle poursuit les sujets qu’elle a choisis comme s’il s’agissait d’entités vivantes, leur permettant de prendre des formes nouvelles et inattendues dans son art. Elle finit par abandonner les sources préexistantes pour laisser émerger un vocabulaire pictural plus libre, plus personnel et plus expressif. Les distinctions entre la figure et le sol s’estompent, créant des espaces chargés de profondeur psychologique et émotionnelle. Le titre de l’exposition Éclipse dans laquelle figurait cette oeuvre fait allusion à la propension humaine à remarquer les choses qui sont en train d’être obscurcies ; lorsque le soleil ou la lune « disparaissent » parce qu’ils sont éclipsés, l’ordre naturel des choses semble modifié, ce qui accroît le sens du présage symbolique. Certaines oeuvres de l’exposition dépeignent des groupes de personnages dont l’individualité est sur le point de se perdre dans les contextes sociaux qui menacent de les engloutir. Claire Tabouret depicts figures and landscapes in states of appearance and disappearance. Though she often (but not always) works from pre-existing photographic images connected to particular historical narratives, she pursues her chosen subjects as if they were living entities, allowing them to assume new and unexpected forms in her art. Eventually she leaves pre-existing sources behind as a freer, more personal, and more expressive painterly vocabulary emerges. Distinctions between figure and ground are blurred, creating spaces charged with psychological and emotional depth. The title of the exhibition Éclipse, in which this work featured, alludes to the human propensity to notice things that are about to be obscured; when the sun or moon ‘disappear’ because they are eclipsed, the natural order of things seems altered, heightening the meaning of the symbolic omen. Some of the works in the exhibition depict groups of characters whose individuality is about to be lost in the social contexts that threaten to engulf them.
