  • Margaret Tafoya Santa Clara Pueblo Black Pottery
    Mar. 29, 2025

Margaret Tafoya Santa Clara Pueblo Black Pottery

    Est: $750 - $1,500

Featured in this lot is a flat black pottery by Santa Clara Pueblo artist, Margaret (Cornflower) Tafoya, born in 1904 and died in 2001. The bowl features a wonderfully and professionally crafted ceramic construction that shows a flat black glaze adorning the bowl with perfect symmetry. The bottom of the bowl is marked as follows: Margaret Tafoya. Margaret was the daughter of Sara Fina (sometimes spelled Serafina) Guiterrez Tafoya (1863–1949) and Jose Geronimo Tafoya (1863–1955). She attended the Santa Clara Pueblo elementary school, and then the Santa Fe Indian School from 1915 to 1918. By the 1960s, Margaret's pottery had become famous, particularly her large black jars. Margaret continued her mother's tradition of making these exceptionally large pots with finely polished surfaces and simple carved designs. "Measuring as high as three feet, these vessels took months to mold and polish. They also required an enormous amount of technical skill, particularly to keep them from breaking while being fired". The condition of this Santa Clara Pueblo black on black pottery is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this pottery bowl are 3" x 8" x 8". The collective weight of this bowl is 2lb.*

  • Santa Clara Blackware Plate w/ Avanyu, Severa Tafoya?
    Feb. 14, 2025

Santa Clara Blackware Plate w/ Avanyu, Severa Tafoya?

    Est: $1,200 - $1,800

Possibly Severa Gutierrez Tafoya (Santa Clara Pueblo, 1890-1973). Blackware plate with Avanyu, ca. 1910 to 1925 CE. Early and substantial shallow bowl or rounded plate in highly burnished blackware with Avanyu in deep relief, possibly by Severa Tafoya. Reverse left plain and not signed - as was normal in the very early days of blackware pottery in the New Mexican Pueblos. The Avanyu symbolizes clouds, rain, lightning, and water places, but also the connection between the terrestrial and the heavenly, a sustainer of life and is found in the pottery of numerous peoples of the Southwest. Size: 10.25" W x 2" H (26 cm x 5.1 cm) About the artist: "Severa Tafoya (1890-1973) was the matriarch of a family of renowned potters. Her brother was Van Gutierrez, and her children included Angela Baca, Tonita Tafoya, and Lydia Tafoya. Other direct descendants include Paul Speckled Rock, Ray Tafoya, Tina Garcia, Greg Garcia, Robert Cleto Nichols, Jennifer Moquino, and Jason Garcia. She was known for her polychrome, carved pottery, and more traditional shapes and designs. Severa won numerous awards for her pottery. So seeing her work gain recognition as her descendants continue to become the new generation of innovators at Santa Clara is a beautiful family legacy."
