    Est: €20,000 - €25,000

Autograph Bengali Poem within a Santiniketan Illustrated Passepartout, handwritten by Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941),inscribed in pencil 'Rabindranath Tagore poetry/written 4 days before/birth of Atasi' (on the reverse of the passe-partout),ink and pencil on paper, two sheets: 19x18 cm, passe-partout: 4x 26x21,5 cm,,Provenance:-Collection Asit Kumar Haldar (1890-1964), thence by descent to the present owners.,Ink on paper, comprising an autograph manuscript poem in Bengali in Tagore’s hand, written on two leaves and mounted within a purpose-designed illustrated passepartout executed in the Santiniketan artistic idiom and most likely drawn by Tagore. The surrounding monochrome pen-and-ink drawing depicts a nocturnal landscape with moon, stars, distant figure and village dwelling, evoking the lyrical atmosphere central to Tagore’s late poetic imagination and characteristic of the Visva-Bharati art school. The poem tells of an old woman who lives on the moon and spends her nights spinning a net of white thread in hopes of catching the stars. One night she dozes off, dreams herself young again, and awakens as a smiling child on earth. Blending fantasy, cosmic imagery and gentle humour, the poem exemplifies Tagore’s talent for turning philosophical ideas into playful fairy-tale scenes for children. The motif of an old woman living on the moon in Bengali folklore likely dates back several centuries, transmitted orally long before it was ever recorded in writing. Rural Bengali storytelling traditions surrounding the moon are ancient, probably originating in the medieval period or even earlier. This particular adaptation of the traditional tale forms part of Tagore’s wider contribution to children’s literature, which played an important role in shaping early twentieth-century Bengali cultural and educational life. Tagore’s poem appeared in print in 1922, under the title ‘Chander Buri / Buri' in the children’s poetry collection Shishu Bhōlanāth. This handwritten manuscript is very likely the original text composed by Tagore around 31 August 1921 for Atasi, the eldest daughter of the artist Asit Kumar Haldar, and presented to Haldar as a gift. The verso bears a contemporary annotation reading: “four days before the birth of Atasi” (born 4 September 1921). Tagore himself is understood to have bestowed the name Atasi. Surviving autograph literary manuscripts by Tagore in private hands are exceedingly scarce, most comparable material being preserved at Rabindra Bhavana and other institutional repositories.

TAGORE Rabindranath Catalogue for the exhibition of drawings and watercolors by Rabindranath Tagore at Galerie Pigalle in May 1930,

    Est: €400 - €600

TAGORE Rabindranath Catalogue for the exhibition of drawings and watercolors by Rabindranath Tagore at Galerie Pigalle in May 1930, in-4 paperback, cords, preface by the Countess de Noailles. Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) Indian poet, philosopher, musician and painter, Rabindranath Tagore was one of the leading figures of the Bengali cultural revival and a central figure in the dialogue between East and West at the turn of the 20th century. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 for Gitanjali (The Lyrical Offering), a collection of poems translated into English prose and prefaced by W. B. Yeats, he gained worldwide recognition. His spiritual and humanist thinking, his commitment to education and freedom, and his deeply lyrical poetic art found a profound echo in Europe. In 1930, at the age of nearly 70, he revealed an unexpected facet of his genius with an exhibition of his drawings and paintings at the Galerie Pigalle in Paris. This first European retrospective was surprising for the modernity of his brushwork, his expressive use of line and his affinity with the Western avant-garde.

    MAETERLINCK MAURICE: (1862-1949)

    Est: €110 - €140

MAETERLINCK MAURICE: (1862-1949) Belgian Poet and Playwright. Nobel Prize in Literature 1911. An early interesting A.L.S., M. Maeterlinck, two pages, 8vo, n.p., [Gand], n.d., [1890], to a colleague, in French. Maeterlinck explains to his correspondent his parent´s disagreement referring to his sketch portrait by Minne, and states `I finally send you the sketch. Georges Minne, after keeping it for several days without reporting at all, send it back to me now and tells me that it is not necessary to fix it. But it happens that my parents, after I showed them the drawing, want to absolutely forbid me to publish it (if it ever was the case) as it is now, because they believe I look too much in a way I shouldn´t.´ further saying `..make it, if possible, and giving them this small satisfaction, looking a little bit more distinguished.. which they claim!´ On a post-scriptum, Maeterlinck concludes `I have just sent to Verlaine the 3 books´. A letter of very good association. VG £100-120 George Minne (1866-1941) Belgian Artist and Sculptor. Paul Verlaine (1844-1896) French Poet. Considered one of the greatest French poets. The three books Maeterlinck refers to in the present letter are most probably Serres Chaudes (1889), La Princesse Maleine (1889) (Princess Maleine) and Les Aveugles (1890) (The Blind).

Stanley Jones, documenting the interfaith dialogue in India during the frst decades of the 20th century. Jones lectured widely throughout India and counted Gandhi, Tagore, Jawaharlal Nehru, and others among his friends. Gandhi writes on civil disobedience and his eforts toward Indian independence: “I can only say that my heart is absolutely open. I have no axes to grind. I want to fnd truth – to see God face to face. It will be a mistake to suppose that my people – the mass – have missed my message but if they have I should be unconcerned. If the whole world accepted my message that would be no proof of its truth as it is intrinsically untrue. I early understood the truth that peace and light came from within and were independent of the world’s verdict. So please come whenever you the time.” Tagore writes in reference to available ashrams and Singh regarding upcoming trips to Tibet. E.
