Biography


Aya Takano was born in 1976, emerging as a globally renowned figure in contemporary art at the turn of the millennium. She cites Osamu Tezuka as a leading influence on her career, along with Yoshitomo Nara and Takashi Murakami — who mentored her after she graduated from art school.

The artist's futuristic, dreamlike pieces include Watching From Jupiter, Earth and Let's Go Into the World. Recurring motifs in her works include delicate, levitating figures with unusual faces, and cute, distorted animal-like creatures. Pale, fleshy tones and rounded lines bring a sense of softness to her provocative illustrations, which celebrate pop culture while urging us to care for each other and the planet.

Takano embraces manga, anime and art as ways to escape into different worlds and feel liberated from the limitations of their own existence. In her own words, she wants: “People who are considered socially vulnerable to feel free and strong in my painting.”

Aya Takano published her catalogue as "HOT BANANA FUDGE" and comic "SPACE SHIP EE". She has exhibitions all over the world, like 2009 had her solo exhibition "Reintegrating Worlds," in Skarstedt gallery in New York and group exhibition as "Garden of Painting Japanese Art of the 00s" at the National Museum of Art in Osaka 2010.
