Dedito inizialmente alla pittura di storia, durante il soggiorno nella CittÃ Eterna l'artista si mise in luce per le sue nature morte, coniugando con abilitÃ la propria sensibilitÃ nordica con le istanze barocche, giungendo a esiti di notevole qualitÃ che gli permisero di intraprendere un sodalizio con Carlo Maratti. Irises, roses, hollyhocks, carnations, tulips, imperial crowns, sunflowers, poppies and gillyflowers – this bouquet by Franz Werner von Tamm certainly does not lack floral variety. The decorative opulence of his floral still lifes made the Hamburg-born artist a highly renowned figure in Baroque still life painting. In 1695 he was appointed Imperial Court Painter in Vienna, and in 1707 he was in the service of the Prince of Liechtenstein there. The Neapolitan biographer Bernardo de’ Dominici leaves no doubt as to Tamm’s artistic achievements and praises his floral still lifes as ‘most perfect works’ (‘opere perfettissime’; cf. Bernardo de’ Dominici: Vite de’ pittori, scultori, ed architetti napoletani, Naples 1742, vol. 4, p. 391).

Franz Werner Tamm (Amburgo 1658 - Vienna 1724) Natura morta di pollame, con piccioni e porcellini d'India Olio su tela 96 x 121 cm L'opera storicamente attribuita a Christoffel Puytlinck, ad un'attenta osservazione denota affinità con i dipinti di F. W. Tamm: la composizione sviluppata nella diagonale che degrada verso destra, il posizionamento degli animali al bordo di una pietra, un limone come primo elemento, la presenza di cavie e piccioni, il tutto ammantato da una calda luce serotina. Degli esempi comparativi si trovano in M. Gregori La natura morta italiana da Caravaggio al Settecento, pp. 406-409. Dopo una prima preparazione in patria presso Dietrich von Sosten e Hans Pfeeiffer, sì trasferì in Italia, precisamente a Roma dove dimorò per circa quindici anni. All'Urbe ebbe modo di entrare in contatto con artisti di alto profilo come Caspar van Wittel, Carlo Maratta, i fratelli van Bloemen e il concittadino Christian Berentz. Con Carlo Maratta ebbe un rapporto profondo di amicizia, tanto che i due condivisero gli spazi della comune bottega. Nel 1695 accettò l'invito di recarsi alla corte di Vienna, durante il viaggio soggiornò a Firenze e Venezia, lasciandovi diverse opere. Giunto a destinazione, grazie all'ammirazione di Leopoldo I d'Asburgo fu pittore di corte ed ebbe occasione di lavorare anche per i principi del Lichtenstein. La sua pittura si contraddistingue per i serrati giochi di luce e ricordano stilisticamente Frans Snyders e Jan Fyt. In einer figürlich reliefierten beige-braunen Vase der große Blumenstrauß mit Rosen, Tulpen und Chrysanthemen zwischen verschiedenen Kleinblütlern. Im Vordergrund, am Boden kriechend, eine kleine Schnecke. Effektvoller Stil mit hell leuchtenden farbigen Blüten vor dunklerem beige-braunem Hintergrund, starke italienische Einflüsse wiederspiegelnd. Der Künstler war seit 1685 in Rom tätig, wo er sich der niederländisch-flämischen Künstlergruppe der Bentvuegheles anschloss. 1695 berief ihn Kaiser Leopold I als Hofmaler nach Wien. Measurements: 85 x 133 cm; 107 x 154 cm (frame). This painting represents a hunting scene with a dramatic and dark composition. In the foreground appear hunted animals - a deer, hanging birds and vegetables, arranged in an almost theatrical space, with a strong contrast between lights and shadows. The attentive gaze of a cat, observing from the top of a wall, adds narrative tension, as if the viewer were witnessing a moment stopped in time. The work relates to the style of Franz Werner von Tamm in its focus on still life and the realistic depiction of hunting, combining the Flemish tradition, visible in the minute detail of fur and feathers, with an Italian Baroque sensibility that emphasizes chiaroscuro and the scenographic arrangement of objects. The dense application of color and the somber atmosphere recall the influence of painters such as Giovan Battista Ruoppolo, while announcing the transition towards more balanced and luminous compositions typical of his time in Vienna. In this canvas the author offers us a still life of classical style, rooted in the Spanish tradition of the genre, with a clear and orderly composition and an expressive treatment of light, which produces expressive shadows on the right side and enhances the volume of the various objects. In the present painting the author pays great attention to the precision of the brushstroke and the atmospheric and chromatic sensitivity of the author, nothing distracts the eye, which remains attentive to the smallest detail. However, despite this apparent austerity and economy of means, there remains a taste for theatricality and deception typical of the Baroque, precisely in the naturalism of the image, so precise and perfect that it results in a deceptive illusionism. Franz Werner von Tamm was an outstanding German Baroque painter, whose career led him to travel and work in Italy, where he consolidated his artistic style. He was born in Hamburg and received his early training in his hometown with the Baroque painters Dietrich von Sosten and Johann Joachim Pfeiffer. His early interest in flower and still life painting led him to join the Bentvueghels' society in Rome, where he became known as "Dapper". In 1685 he moved to Rome, where he joined the circle of Flemish artists headed by Caspar van Wittel. There he continued his training in the workshop of Carlo Maratta, absorbing influences from both Roman classicism and the Flemish tradition. Among his main artistic references was the Flemish genre painter David de Coninck, whose influence is perceptible in the precision and vitality of his still lifes. Von Tamm, in turn, became Pietro Navarra's teacher, contributing to the diffusion of this style. His painting combines the Nordic tradition of Frans Snyders and Jan Fyt with Italian stylistic elements. His works include still lifes, vases, fruits and floral arrangements arranged in open landscapes, as well as objects from classical antiquity, such as vases, reliefs and sculptures. His use of dark colors and thick application of paint recalls the compositions of Giovan Battista Ruoppolo. From the mid-1690s, von Tamm settled in Vienna, where he worked as an imperial court painter. In this period, his style approached that of Jan van Huysum, with more luminous and detailed compositions. Although he occasionally traveled to Liechtenstein and Passau for specific commissions, he remained in the Austrian capital until his death in 1724. It has two slight flaws and tears.

Im Vordergrund am Bildrand weiße Blüten neben einer schillernden Pflaume. Rechts erhöht auf dem Traubenzweig sitzend ein afrikanischer Papagei mit dunkelgrauem Gefieder und roten Schwanzfedern. FT.46 and FT.47 (as Franz Werner von Tamm) The present compositions are typical of the Roman production of Franz Werner von Tamm. During his period in Rome, from 1685 to 1695, Tamm was influenced by the master flower painters active in the city including Paolo Porpora, Mario de’ Fiori, Christian Berentz and especially Karel van Vogelaer, combining with the lucidity of vision and analytical taste of its northern European origins. The moving flowers fills the pictorial space: roses, poppies, carnations, lilies and peonies are skillfully combined with partly twisted stems and offer a multitude of spatially varied impressions. The rendering of the putti reflects the influence of Carlo Maratta (1625–1713), the leading artist of Roman classicism, who favoured Tamm for the floral and naturalistic inserts in his paintings. The collaboration between the two artists started in circa 1685 and they carried out together the celebrated two series of sovrapporte with Garlands and Putti, six for the roman financier Francesco Montioni and four for Marchese Niccolò Pallavicini (see Fototeca Zeri no. 89428). These series reveal close connection with the present pair of paintings. Tamm depicted the composition of the first painting in another version, signed and dated 1693, differing in the absence of the putto on the left (see G. Bocchi in literature, cat. no. FT.45). Thereby, suggesting the dating of present paintings. The second canvas of the present pair is instead an unpublished invention by Tamm. In Hamburg, Tamm initially devoted himself to history painting but quickly specialised in still life paintings. His stay in Rome secured him some consideration among genre painters; in the city, Tamm was introduced by Gaspar van Wittel, Vanvitelli, into the circle of Flemish-Italian artists and joined the ‘Schilderbent’ association of painters, where he received the moniker ‘Dapper’. Through Maratta, he obtained commissions from Roman patrician families. From 1701 he is documented in Vienna as painter to the Imperial court of Leopold I.

A hare and a wild duck are beautifully depicted in this pair of still lifes. The two animals are painted realistically and hanging from a tree. In the background, a mountainous landscape opens up in the distance. The meticulous workmanship and the finesse of the brush exemplify the artist's training. Since the Middle Ages, hunting had been the preserve of the aristocracy. Hunting still lifes depicting the kill were a reminder of this privilege, and gave their owners a sense of participating in the aristocratic lifestyle; whether they themselves were of noble, or only affluent middle-class birth.

Auf einer angedeuteten steinernen Tischplatte ein Gefäß mit den Bildraum füllenden bewegt dargestellten Blumen. Rosen, Mohn, Wicken, Lilien und Päonien sind geschickt mit teils gewundenen Stielen kombiniert und bieten eine Vielzahl von räumlich abwechslungsreich gestalteten Eindrücken, die wie bei einem Feuerwerk einerseits eine Verdichtung der Farben, andererseits aber auch einzelne Farbmomente isoliert im Raum darbieten. Franz Werner von Tamm wurde in seiner Anfangszeit durch Th. van Soesten und Johann Pfeiffer zum Historienmaler ausgebildet. Später wechselte er thematisch in die dekorative Blumen- und Früchtemalerei, wandte sich 1685-1695 nach Rom und damit zu Mario Nuzzi, genannt Dei Fiori. Unter dessen Anleitung entwickelt er sich zu einem Meister seines Faches. 1695 berief Leopold I den Maler an den Wiener Hof, wo er den Ruf als einer der führenden Vertreter in der Stilllebenmalerei erlangt hat; sein Einfluss auf diese Kunstform wirkt im gesamten 18. Jahrhundert. Das vorliegende Bild ist wohl in der Anfangszeit der Wiener Hofmalerstellung entstanden, im Nachhall typischer italienischer Dekorationsmalerei fokussiert Tamm einzelne minutiös ausgeführte Blumen der Komposition; der Effekt der „differenten Fokussierung“ führt zu einer räumlichen Tiefe des Bildes. Die Fürstlich-Liechtensteinsche Galerie besitzt allein 24 (nach anderen Angaben 17) und die kaiserliche Gemäldegalerie acht Werke Tamms. In Dresden ist er mit zwei größeren und zwei kleineren Bildern, in Schwerin und Prag mit je einem vertreten. Anmerkung 1: Dem Gemälde ehemals beigegeben ein Gutachten von Ingvar Bergström nicht vorliegend (Lempertz Lot 1088).
