  • 1939 TANG YUN AND LAI CHUSHENG PLAYFUL CATS SCROLL PAINTING
    Aug. 21, 2026

1939 TANG YUN AND LAI CHUSHENG PLAYFUL CATS SCROLL PAINTING

    Est: $6,000 - $8,000

Artist(s): Tang Yun (1910-1993) and Lai Chusheng (1903-1975) The present hanging scroll depicts two playful cats resting beneath an overhanging rock and blossoming peony. Executed in expressive ink washes with restrained color accents, the composition combines the decorative richness of the peony with the lively characterization of the animals. The rounded forms and animated expressions of the cats convey warmth and vitality, while the dramatic ink treatment of the rock and foliage creates a strong compositional contrast. Within Chinese painting, cats symbolize longevity and peaceful domestic life, while peonies traditionally represent prosperity, honor, and abundance. The pairing of these auspicious motifs creates a subject associated with happiness and good fortune. The vigorous brushwork of the foliage and rock formations, together with the charming depiction of the cats, reflects the complementary artistic strengths of Tang Yun and Lai Chusheng. Collaborative works of this nature occupy an important position within modern Shanghai School painting, demonstrating the continued vitality of traditional flower-and-bird subjects interpreted through the personal styles of two distinguished masters. Ink and color on paper, Yisebiao mount, Vertical Axis Hanging scrolls Dimensions (Painting View/Sight): 109cm H x 34cm W Dated: In The JiMao year (1939) Signed/Seal(s): Four Seals, signed PROVENANCE: Acquired from a prominent collector, representing an important private collections. The collections presented and offered up to auctions from Lot 25 through Lot 136; and additional related documents and or manuscripts from Lot 137 to Lot 228. Wei Tao-Ming (Wei Daoming), (October 28, 1899 - May 18, 1978) was a prominent Chinese diplomat, statesman, and senior official of the Republic of China. Born in Jiangxi Province, he studied law in the United States and became active in the Nationalist government under Chiang Kai-shek. During the Second World War, Wei served as the Republic of China's Ambassador to the United States from 1942 to 1946, playing an important role in strengthening Sino-American relations during the Allied war effort. He later held several key government positions, including Governor of Taiwan Province (1947-1949), Ambassador to Japan, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China from 1966 to 1971. Wei remained an influential figure in Chinese diplomacy throughout the mid-twentieth century and was closely involved in the Republic of China's international affairs during a period of major political transition in East Asia. ARTIST BIO: Tang Yun and Lai Chusheng were two of the most important representatives of the twentieth-century Shanghai School. Their friendship and artistic collaboration embodied the revival of literati ideals within modern Chinese painting, combining scholarly cultivation with expressive brushwork and a deep appreciation of traditional artistic values. Tang Yun (1910-1993), also known by his sobriquet Dashi, was celebrated for his paintings of flowers, birds, fish, fruits, and landscapes. As a painter, calligrapher, and connoisseur, Tang played a leading role in the development of modern Chinese painting and later served as a prominent figure within the Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy. Lai Chusheng (1903-1975), born in Xiaoshan, Zhejiang Province, was one of the foremost painters, calligraphers, and seal carvers of modern China. A disciple of the celebrated master Wu Changshuo, Lai developed a highly individual style characterized by bold brushwork, vigorous compositions, and expressive ink techniques. He excelled in flower-and-bird painting, particularly subjects such as insects, birds, vegetables, and small animals, which he rendered with remarkable vitality and spontaneity. His achievements in seal carving further established his reputation among the leading artists of the Shanghai School. Collaborative works by Tang Yun and Lai Chusheng are particularly admired for the harmonious combination of their respective artistic strengths. Tang’s elegant and refined brushwork complements Lai’s bold and expressive manner, creating paintings that embody both scholarly sophistication and spontaneous vitality. Est: $6,000 - $8,000

Artist(s): Tang Yun (1910-1993) A waterfowl resting upon a weathered tree stump beneath drooping willow branches beside a tranquil waterside setting. Peony blossoms, bamboo, and aquatic plants enliven the composition, while the restrained palette and expressive ink work create a refined and poetic atmosphere. The combination of bird, flowers, willow, and waterside landscape reflects traditional auspicious themes associated with harmony, elegance, and the changing seasons. Executed with fluid brushwork and delicate washes of color, the painting demonstrates the decorative beauty and spontaneity that characterize Tang Yun’s flower-and-bird paintings.
