He studied with Robert Onderdonk and Jose Arpa, and was later influenced by Julian Onderdonk. He also received a law degree from the Cuero Institute, Cuero, Texas. Taylor was a charter member of the Coppini Academy of Fine Arts and a member of the Texas Fine Arts Association. He exhibited in the 1910 Cotton Carnival and the San Antonio competitions. During his career, Taylor painted a number of scenes of the San Antonio River, often including its bridges. Downtown on the River is a fairly rare example, as it has a slight stylization leaning toward Regionalism, something rather unusual in Taylor's oeuvre.
