        TELINGATER, SOLOMON BENEDIKTOVICH (RUSSIAN 1903-1969), PIONER! BUD' GOTOV STAT' AKTIVNYM CHLENOM PROFSOYUZA [Pioneer! Be Ready to Become an Active Member of Trade Union], 1924, color lithograph, 44.5 x 59.5 cm (17 1/2 x 23 3/8 in), edition of 1500. PROVENANCE INFORMATION The current lot comes from the collection of the esteemed collector and art critic Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. Kholodkov acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout the decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 exhibition Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American istitutions. His unique selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.

Private collection, Europe. Solomon Telingater (1903–1969), a prominent figure of Russian Constructivism, was a Soviet photographer, artist, book illustrator and designer of over 600 books. Telingater studied in Baku and then in VKhUTEMAS, Moscow, under Vladimir Favorsky (1920–1921). In 1920s–1930s he was at the forefront of the radical Constructivist developments in Russian printing. As a member of the Oktiabr group, he worked closely with the Vesnin brothers, Sergei Eisenstein, Dmitry Moor, Alexander Deineka, Varvara Stepanova, El Lissitzky and Kukryniksy, using photography and photomontage in his book design. After his service during World War II, he continued working as a designer and illustrator for periodicals, such as Iskusstvo kino, and for the popular and academic books, producing cover designs for publications by Alexander Tvardovsky and Ilya Ehrenburg, among many others.

Moscow and Leningrad: ONTI NKTP SSSR, 1935. 8vo.164 pp. Illustrated with two color and black and white photomontages and charts designed by S. Telingater, drawings by Mieczyslaw Vasilyevich Dobrokovsky and photographs by Vladimir Teobaldovich Griuntal. Original stamped gray cloth.Edges rubbed, internal soiling. This ambitious volume is dedicated to the extraordinary strides of the Soviet steel industry under Stalin's Five Year Plan.The frontispiece plays on the nom de guerre "Stalin" from stal,the Russian word for "steel":a thin sheet of stainless steel inserted between two sheets of heavy paper stock with a cut-out of a silhouette of Joseph Stalin. The book was also issued in a special steel binding.El Lissitzky declared Telingater to be the first of the younger generation of Soviet designers.He was a master of photomontage and Constructivist poster and book design. He received a gold medal at the 1937 Paris Exhibition of Art and Technology for his book design. V. T. Griuntal belonged to the photography division of the October union of artists headed by Aleksandr Rodchenko.Polish born illustrator M. V. Dobrokovsky also won a gold medal at the 1925 the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris and worked on such books as Massy vozhdiu [The Mass Leader] (1934) and Sotsialicticheskoe stroitelstvo v SSSR [Socialist Construction in the USSR] (1936).He was arrested and shot in 1937. OCLC records only one copy in the Getty (steel binding).
