      E. Oscar Thalinger was an early St. Louis Modernist who, after pursing regionalist subjects and realistic landscapes during the 1920s and 1930s, began experimenting with the Cubism and Abstract Expressionism he encountered while studying in Europe during the early 20th Century. This work from 1942 titled 'Classical Times' draws upon those more abstract themes not seen in his earlier works. Signed and dated lower right. The painting measures 28.25 x 36.5 inches, frame measures 32.5 x 40.5 inches.
