Original dark brown cloth binding, the boards with blind-stamped borders of double ruling, the spines with gilt short title (Journal of Thomas Shillitoe) and volume number. Spines and corners slightly worn and bumped, the rear spine edge of volume one with a short tear. End papers of both volume split along the gutter. Previous owner’s collection label (Edmund Marsh, 399) on front pastedown of volume one (and signs of its removal from volume two). Pages un-trimmed. Second item: Julia Gage, daughter of Marcus Gage McCauseland or Bellarena, married Sir Hugh Stewart, 2nd baronet Stewart, of Athenree in 1826. They had a daughter and later a son John Marcus who was born in November 1830, the same month given for Julia's death.

Private Thomas Smith, of Thornhill, Dumfries, Scotland, died at home, apparently of disease, on 11 July 1915, having served for a time on the Western Front. He is remembered with honour at the Morton (Thornhill) Cemetery, Scotland.
