The Black Emergency Cultural Coalition Inc. (BECC) was organized in January 1969 by a group of African American artists in response to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's "Harlem on My Mind" exhibit, which omitted the contributions of African American painters and sculptors to the Harlem community. Members of this initial group that protested against the exhibit included several prominent African American artists, including Benny Andrews and Clifford R. Joseph, cofounders of the BECC. The primary goal of the group was to agitate for change in the major art museums in New York City for greater representation of African American artists and their work in these museums. Featured in many public collections and exhibitions, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Brooklyn Museum, Museum of Modern Art New York, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Nordness Galleries NYC, Rhode Island School of Design 1969, San Francisco Museum of Art 1969, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston 1970, Parrish Art Museum and more

    Russ Thompson b. 1922 Birds of a Feather 1968 mixed media 14-1/2 x 11 inches signed Russ Thompson was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1922. He studied at the Pratt Institute in New York, as well as Carlyle College and the New York School of Modern Photography. His work typically utilizes multi-media, revealing his background in these various forms of creativity. He exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, Smithsonian Institution , Boston Museum of Fine Arts , Rhode Island School of Design, and the San Francisco Museum of Art , to name a few. He also exhibited in Contemporary Black Artists (1969) and at Ruder and Finn (NY). His work is in the collections of the Frederick Douglass Institute (Washington, DC), Spiro & Levinson Corporation, and the personal collection of Benny Andrews.

Possibly titled by the artist "What had the bird to do with being red" under the large bird. Russ Thompson,African-American, born Jamaica 1922-. Part of the late 60's Black Emergency Cultural Coalition along with Benny Andrews. During this period, Hilton Kramer of the New York Times was quoted about an African-American art exhibition, "only one - RussThompson - seemed to me to show any originality of form and ideas...". Collected by Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Brooklyn Museum, MOMA and the Smithsonian. To our knowledge, this is first Thompson to appear at auction. Dimensions: 15 1/2x 19 1/2 Condition: good, not examined out of frame. Provenance: Long Island estate.
