(1889 Wien - 1952 Schloss Hartmannsberg/Bad Endorf) Badende Bronze, braun patiniert. Sign. "THORAK". H. 70,5 cm. Provenienz: Süddeutsche Privatsammlung. Brown patinated bronze. Signed "THORAK".

(1889 Wien - 1952 Schloss Hartmannsberg/Bad Endorf) "Schreitendes Pferd" (auch betitelt "Pferd") Bronze, dunkle, annähernd schwarze Patina, 1938/39. Sign. "THORAK". Bronze with dark nearly black patina, circa 1938/39. Signed "THORAK". Patina rubbed to the base.

JOSEF THORAK (Salzburg, 1889 - Hartmannsberg Castle, 1952). "Das licht, 1944. Marble.

    Est: €130,000 - €150,000

JOSEF THORAK (Salzburg, 1889 - Hartmannsberg Castle, 1952). "Das licht, 1944. Marble. Measurements: 302 cm (height). Includes iron base of 168 cm. Total height with pedestal: 470 cm. Exhibitions: "European sculpture of the 20th century", European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona, 2014. Carved in marble, the sculpture is monumental in height, a hallmark of Thorak's "gigantism," designed to dominate the space it occupies. The work reflects a blend of neoclassicism and expressionism. Although the anatomy is idealized and soft, the dramatic tension in the neck and raised arms reflects the more emotional and "heroic" style Thorak developed throughout his career. Josef Thorak, born February 7, 1889 in Vienna, Austria, emerged from a society steeped in artistic tradition, but in the throes of transformation. His early life was marked by a rigorous academic training, initially focused on architecture, before he devoted himself entirely to sculpture. This foundational period instilled in him not only a technical mastery, but also an appreciation for classical forms and monumental scale, elements that would become defining characteristics of his later work. Turn-of-the-century Vienna was a melting pot of artistic movements, from Secessionism to Expressionism; however, Thorak's early inclinations leaned toward a more conservative aesthetic, drawing inspiration from the masters of the Renaissance and the great sculptures of Antiquity. Thorak's career gained significant momentum in the 1930s, coinciding with the rise of the National Socialist regime in Germany. His powerful, idealized sculptures resonated with the aesthetic preferences of the new government, which sought to glorify the Aryan ideal and project an image of national strength and unity. He quickly became a favorite artist of the Nazi hierarchy, receiving prestigious commissions for large-scale public works intended to embody the ideology of the regime. In this period, Thorak moved away from smaller portrait busts and toward colossal figures: imposing depictions of idealized soldiers, athletes, and citizens. His sculptures were characterized by muscularity, heroic poses, and a deliberate emphasis on physical perfection. The magnitude of these works sought to overwhelm the viewer, conveying a sense of power and invincibility. He established his studio in Oranienburg, near Berlin, where he oversaw the production of numerous monumental sculptures, often employing large teams of assistants to realize his ambitious designs. Josef Thorak's legacy remains deeply complex and controversial. He was included in the *Gottbegnadeten-Liste* (List of the Divinely Gifted), a compilation of artists considered essential to the cultural life of Nazi Germany, highlighting his importance within the regime's artistic hierarchy. After World War II, Thorak faced a denazification process, but was never convicted of war crimes, although his work fell into disrepute due to its association with Nazism. Today, his sculptures are virtually withdrawn from public display and remain the subject of intense debate.

(1889 Wien - 1952 Schloss Hartmannsberg/Bad Endorf) Schreitendes Pferd Bronze mit dunkler, annähernd schwarzer Patina, um 1939/1940. Sign. "THORAK". Dark green patinated bronze, circa 1937. Signed.

    Josef Thorak (1889 - 1952) - a life-sized bronze portrait bust of Ernst "Putzi" Hanfstaengl, 1934

    Est: €4,500 - €5,400

Bronze with beautiful dark brown patina. Signed in the nape of the neck "J.Thorak". Height 35 cm. On a marble base, total height 42.5 cm. Apart from Arno Breker, Josef Thorak was the most important sculptor of the Third Reich. Before the war, Hitler had a huge studio built for him in Baldham near Munich according to drafts by Albert Speer. It was at that time the largest art studio in Europe - spacious enough for Thorak to create one-piece sculptures with a height of up to 17 metres. Beside the monumental sculptures, he also created numerous busts, among them portrait busts of Frederick the Great, Otto von Bismarck, Friedrich Nietzsche, Paul von Hindenburg, Rudolf Heß, Benito Mussolini, Fritz Todt and, in 1934, apart from a bust of Hitler also that of Ernst Hanfstaengl. Cf. Mortimer G. Davidson, Kunst in Deutschland 1933 - 1945 - Skulpturen, p. 507. Ernst Hanfstaengl (1887 - 1975), wealthy son of a publisher and art dealer and one of Hitler's most colourful characters and important patrons from the early years of the NSDAP (after the failed Beer Hall Putsch in 1923, Hitler went into hiding in Hanfstaengl's country house in Uffing at Lake Staffel), became the NSDAP's foreign press officer in 1931. Goebbel's intentional discrediting of Hanfstaengl to strengthen his own position with Hitler caused Hanfstaengl to escape to the United Kingdom in 1937, where he was captured at the outbreak of the war and finally extradited to the USA. As Hitler's friend of many years he was to advise the allied forces regarding his subsequent steps.

Monumental head depicting the Reich Minister for Armament Dr. Fritz Todt, made from so-called "Untersberg" marble (northern Limestone Alps near Salzburg) with reddish inclusions (so-called "trout marble"), sculptured in one piece with a rectangular base (dimensions 28 x 32 cm), signed on nape of neck "THORAK 1942". In good to very good condition, total height 54 cm. Josef Thorak and Arno Breker were the most important sculptors of the Third Reich. The War had not yet started when Hitler had a huge studio built for Thorak - the largest in Europe - according to plans by Albert Speer in Baldham near Munich. In this studio Thorak was able to create sculptures as high as 17 metres in one piece. In 1944, he was put on the so-called "Gottbegnadetenliste" (tr. Dr. Fritz Todt (1891 - 1942), inspector general for road engineering in Germany and constructor of the Reichsautobahn (tr. The militarily organised construction group organisation Todt, founded in 1938, was named after him (Siegfried Line, Atlantic Wall). In 1937, he was awarded the German National Prize for Art and Science created by Hitler, which included prize money of 100,000 Reichsmark. On 8 February 1942 he died in a plane crash not far from the Führer's headquarters Wolfsschanze near Rastenburg. Earlier he supposedly had had a heated discussion with Hitler as in his opinion the war could not be won any more. Nevertheless Hitler awarded him posthumously the German Order, the highest award of the Third Reich. Hartmannsberg Castle, acquired by Josef Thorak in 1938. The marble head serving as a model for later objects was made here. The marble head became the property of a Chiemgau citizen after the 2nd World War and was part of his private collection, ignored by the public. A comparable as well damaged head was sold as lot 3182 at Hermann Historica's 60th auction. Another copy is published in (tr.) In good to very good condition, total height 54 cm. In 1944 he was put on the so-called "Gottbegnadetenliste" (list of the divinely gifted) by Hitler, thus he was excused from military service. Furthermore Hitler put him on his special list of the "twelve irreplaceable visual artists". Dr. Fritz Todt (1891 - 1942), inspector general for road engineering in Germany and constructor of the motorways of the Reich, SA-Obergruppenführer, major general of the Luftwaffe, from 1940 on Reich secretary for weaponry and ammunition. The militarily organised construction group organisation Todt (Siegfried Line, Atlantic Wall) foundet in 1938, was named after him (Siegfried Line, Atlantic Wall). In 1937 he was awarded the German National Prize for Art and Science created by Hitler, which included prize money of 100,000 Reichsmark. Provenance: Hartmannsberg Castle, acquired by Josef Thorak in 1938. The marble head serving as a model for later objects was made here. The marble head became the property of a Chiemgau citizen after the 2nd World War and was part of his private collection, ignored by the public, a photo document included. A comparable, but damaged head was sold as lot 3182 at Hermann Historica's 60th auction. Another copy is published in "The Art in the German Reich", December 1943 issue, p. 267 and in Mortimer G. Davidson, Kunst in Deutschland 1933 - 1945. Masterfully crafted piece and of utmost rarity.
