Künstlerinfo: verwandte auch das Pseudonym "William Thornley", britischer Marinemaler (ca. 1847 bis ca. 1907), wohl identisch mit den Malern Charles Thornley und Hubert Thornley, welche vergleichbare Motive malten, fand seine Motive in Belgien, Holland, Norwegen und Italien, beschickte 1859–1898 die Ausstellung der Royal Academy London und 1861–67 die Ausstellungen des Londoner Kunstvereins "British Institution", später auch vertreten im Pariser Salon, wo er 1881 eine lobende Erwähnung und 1888 eine Bronzemedaille erhielt, tätig erwähnt in London, Quelle: Christopher Wood "Das Wörterbuch der viktorianischen Maler" und Internet.     William Thornley (1857-1935) France, Oil on canvas. Depicting a coastal harbor scene on a cloudy day with rough waves. A dinghy in the foreground with many ships in the background. Signed in the lower right. Plate on frame William Thornley Born 1857. Canvas was repaired in the lower middle area. Georges William Thornley is known for Seascape and landscape paintings, engraving, and lithography. A late 19th and early 20th century seascape and landscape painter, many of them watercolors, and especially of scenes of Normandy and the French and Italian Rivieras. Thornley was the son of a Welsch immigrant. He was especially noted for his watercolors, his impressionist style and for engravings and lithography. Thornley began exhibiting in 1878. Overall size: 16 x 14 in. Image size: 11 1/2 x 9 1/2 in.

ANSLOW. THORNBERY./1875' verso, oil on canvas 25.5 x 40.5cm Provenance: The Estate of Mrs Althea Lloyd. Condition Report: Overall 33.5 x 48.5cm The canvas does not appear to be relined, however, a wax treatment of some sort seems to have been applied. It is not clear the reason for this, under UV light there is evidence of retouching most significantly to the left side of the sky, a repaired scratch to te extreme lower left edge and some scattered spots elsewhere. Presented ready to hang.
