František Tichý liked the environment where people meet and earned extra money by singing and reciting in cabarets. It is not surprising that he also visited the literary club, which he sketched with a quick and brilliant sketch. His drawing style was close to caricature. His relation to commedia dell'arte is manifested in his artistic work from the point of view of literature, and Don Quixote became an important supporting theme for his work. Technique: ink, watercolour, paper, Signed: sign. lower right: T40

      FRANTIŠEK TICHÝ 1896 - 1961 - ACROBATS

      Est: -

This colored ink drawing is an excellent example of the artistic skill of František Tichý, a leading figure in the Czech avant-garde of the 1940s. This accurate sketch of two acrobats, portrayed using the simplest forms of expression, fully conveys the authenticity of the environment and the seeming urgency of human fate. The value of the work is increased by the unique drawing on the obverse side, which was intended to be a basis for a cartoon of a mosaic of Saint Francis for the Capuchin monastery in the Prague Castle district. Inscription on back by PhDr. František Dvořák: exhibited at Vilímek Gallery in 1943. The work comes from an important Prague collection. Technique: Ink combined with tempera and sepia, paper, Signed: Lower left "Tichý 43"

The themes of the mannequin, circus and variety show are an important and numerous part of the artist's distinctive work, which easily seeps into the artist's significant graphics offered here. Tichý was originally going to take a job in São Paulo, Brazil. In Marseille, France, he was only to board a ship bound for South America, but fate changed his plans. In November 1930 he arrived in Paris, where he remained until 1935. Then the changing political situation in Europe and his first artistic successes in Prague forced him to return. From 1945 to 1954 he was a professor at the Academy of Arts and Crafts in Prague, where he taught drawing and graphic arts. In 1946 he was elected a member of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts. Dedication to the architect J. Šust. The original drawing for the graphic art is in the collections of the Moravian Gallery in Brno. Technique: Drypoint on paper, Signed: Lower center "Tichý 45"

      FRANTIŠEK TICHÝ 1896 - 1961 - ARLECCHINO - STUDY

      Est: -

Harlequin drawn by František Tichý, a leading figure of the Czech avant-garde of the 1940s. The head of a character from the classic Italian Commedia dell’arte with a high hat - Harlequin (Arlecchino) - inspires the artist to this day. Originally a poor farmer, coming in patched clothes from the mountains of Bergamo, this is the source of his mottled, plaid clothing. In France, his clothing at the court was stylized, instead of patches, he began to wear clothing made of colored squares. From the concise preparatory sketch of the harlequin, shown by the simplest means of expression, we fully feel the authenticity of the environment and, as it were, the urgency of human destiny. Artwork comes from the property of Anna Fárová. Technique: Pen, coloured pencils, paper, Signed: Unsigned
