[1959]. 46 pages in-4 numérotées 1 à 27 (avec plusieurs numéros bis et plusieurs pages portant le même numéro ; 5 pages ne comportent que 3 à 6 lignes) sur 28 feuillets, encre sur papier, montées sur feuillets blancs, dans un volume in-4 (288 x 245 mm). Maroquin noir, plats couverts de dentelle noire, dos lisse orné du titre et du nom de l’auteur en lettres dorées, doublure et gardes de papier rose et gris, chemise de rhodoïd (Alain Devauchelle). " Une femme libre est tout le contraire d’une femme facile […] Je lui souhaite de mûrir sans se renier." Bardot vue par Beauvoir ou quand la féministe démêle le mythe. Manuscrit de travail d’un des textes féministes les plus connus de l’auteur du Deuxième sexe. Manuscrit vraisemblablement de premier jet, abondamment corrigé, avec de nombreuses biffures et ajouts. Quelques passages sont plusieurs fois repris. Simone de Beauvoir écrit cet essai en 1959 en réponse aux accusations perpétrées contre Brigitte Bardot. Le texte, traduit en anglais par Bernard Fretchman, paraît en août 1959 dans Esquire (p. 32-38). Il est publié l’année suivante, à Londres et à New York, sous le titre Brigitte Bardot and the Lolita syndrome, illustrée de photographies de BB à ses débuts (voir livre joint). L’article en français est publié pour la première fois en 1979 sous le titre Brigitte Bardot et le syndrome Lolita dans Les Écrits de Simone de Beauvoir (p. 363-376), dans une version qui, en réalité, est une retraduction en français du texte anglais, approuvée par Beauvoir : le texte original en français de notre manuscrit n’a jamais été publié. Le Castor rend un bel hommage à Brigitte Bardot et décortique le mythe qui nimbe celle "née de l'immortalité d'une époque". Elle en brosse un portrait à la fois nuancé et complice, soulignant son naturel, sa spontanéité, sa franchise et sa "fièvre de vivre". Révélée par Vadim dans son célèbre film Et Dieu créa la femme, BB n’a rien de ces "Circé classiques […] aux forces maléfiques". Au fil des pages, Simone de Beauvoir évoque tour à tour Ava Gardner, Marlène Dietrich et Garbo. Bardot, par sa spontanéité et son absence de calcul, rompt avec l’image de la femme fatale et sophistiquée, véhiculée par des "idoles inaccessibles". Si elle suscite le désir, c’est sans aucune préméditation. Ce texte, l’une des toutes premières analyses d’une icône contemporaine, nous éclaire sur l’émergence d'une figure féminine affranchie des codes traditionnels. " […] Brigitte Bardot est le specimen le plus accompli de ces nymphes ambiguës. Vue de dos, son corps de danseuse, mince, musclé, est presque un corps androgyne. La féminité triomphe dans un buste ravissant ; sur ses épaules s'éploie la longue chevelure voluptueuse de Mélisande, mais elle se coiffe avec une négligence de sauvageonne ; ses lèvres dessinent une moue juvénile en même temps qu'elles invitent au baiser […] Elle fait fi de toutes les toilettes, des bijoux, des gants, des parfums, des fards, de tous les artifices ; pourtant sa démarche est lascive et on voit ce dénuement rien qu'à la regarder danser. On a souvent reproché à son visage de n'avoir qu'une seule expression ; en effet, le monde extérieur ne s'y reflète guère, et on n'y voit pas transparaître de grands sentiments : mais cet air d'indifférence lui sied. L'expérience n'a pas marqué B.B., même si elle a vécu — vécu dans « un bas de malheur » — La vie lui a donné des leçons trop confuses pour qu'elle en retienne rien. Elle est sans mémoire, sans pensée, et elle retrouve, grâce à cette ignorance, la parfaite innocence qu'on attribue symboliquement à l'enfance [...] B.B. est une enfant — grande et pathétique, qui a besoin d'un protecteur, d'un guide […] B.B. ne cherche pas le monde, elle ne revendique rien, elle n'est pas plus envieuse de ses droits que de ses devoirs : elle suit sa pente. Elle mange quand elle a faim, elle aborde l'amour avec la même simplicité de désir [...] Elle ne critique pas autant, elle agit à sa guise et c'est bien là ce qui dérange, elle ne pose pas de questions mais elle apporte des réponses dont la franchise risque d'être contagieuse […] Marlène [Dietrich] exhibait ses mains gantées de soie en chantant d'une voix rauque et en promenant autour d'elle son beau regard lourd, elle mettait en scène une cérémonie d'envoûtement. B.B. n'envoûte pas : elle agit. Sa chair n'a pas l'abondance qui symbolise, chez d'autres, la perversité ; ses vêtements ne sont pas des fétiches, et quand elle se dénude, elle ne dévoile pas un mystère. Elle montre son corps, ni plus, ni moins... On appelait Garbo ‘La Divine’. Bardot est au contraire éminemment terrestre […] J'espère que pour conquérir la popularité elle ne se résignera pas à l'insignifiance. Je lui souhaite de mûrir sans se renier ".
