Born in Huddersfield in 1932, Tindle received his early training at the Coventry School of Art, before being appointed visiting tutor at the Royal College of Art, and later as Ruskin Master of Drawing at Oxford University. Praised for his sensitive and meditative depictions of domestic interiors and for his dexterous tonal control, Tindle’s works are characterised by their fastidious attention to detail and enigmatic, dreamlike qualities, where human activity is evident and yet conspicuously hidden.
