La version finale à l’huile est probablement le tableau intitulé Le Déjeuner du matin, vendu lors de la vente d’atelier posthume de l’artiste en 1903 (Atelier James Tissot, Vente à Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 9 et 10 juillet 1903, lot 10). La version à l’aquarelle fut vendue par Tissot lui-même en 1886 au marchand d’art parisien Louis Adolphe Beugniet, accompagnée de deux autres aquarelles de compositions à l’huile (carnet de ventes de Tissot). Les albums photographiques répertorient également une aquarelle représentant la servante portant un plateau de petit-déjeuner (fig.2), gravée par Tissot en manière noire en 1886 intitulée Le Matin (fig. 3). Une étude à l’huile non localisée représentant la figure masculine assise est également connue. Enfin, cette figure masculine se trouve également au verso d’une représentation imaginaire de Kathleen Newton, connue sous le titre Dolce far niente (vendue chez Christie’s, Londres, le 23 novembre 2005, lot 1). Dans le sillage des séries La Femme à Paris et L’Etrangère des années 1885 et 1886 Né Jacques-Joseph, l’artiste français fut surnommé « James » dès l’enfance (probablement grâce à la présence d’une gouvernante anglaise) et utilisa ce prénom professionnellement dès ses premières expositions à Paris en 1858. Le succès commercial rencontré durant les années 1860 permit à Tissot de se faire construire une maison à Paris. Toutefois, après la guerre franco-prussienne, le siège de Paris et la Commune, il s’installa à Londres pendant dix ans, ne revenant vivre à Paris qu’après la mort prématurée de sa bien-aimée, Kathleen Newton, en novembre 1882, emportée par la tuberculose. Tissot conçut alors une série de grandes peintures intitulée La Femme à Paris, exposée à la Galerie Sedelmeyer, à Paris, en 1885, puis à la Tooth’s Gallery de Londres, en 1886. Celle-ci devait être suivie d’une autre série restée inachevée, L’Étrangère. Le thème de la servante portant un plateau de petit-déjeuner, qui figure sur notre toile, a pu être développé dans ce contexte. La servante souriante, vêtue d’une robe blanche agrémentée de pois ou de motifs floraux rouge pâle, d’un tablier et d’une coiffe blanche ornée d’un ruban, regarde directement le spectateur — comme si le plateau qu’elle tient, avec son chocolat chaud et ses toasts, nous était destiné. Dans deux peintures appartenant ou apparentées à la série L’Étrangère, La Voyageuse (Koninklijk Museum voor Schöne Kunsten, Anvers) et Return from Henley (anciennement Newark Museum, New Jersey), une jeune femme placée au centre regarde directement le spectateur, tout comme plusieurs personnages féminins des compositions de La Femme à Paris. Le petit-déjeuner du chasseur servi par une servante anglaise La servante représentée sur notre tableau est probablement une Anglaise. En effet, les employés de Tissot comprenaient des Anglais, et il est possible qu’il ait eu une domestique anglaise — un modèle idéal pour L’Étrangère. La technique de la manière noire était considérée comme un médium typiquement anglais et particulièrement adapté à la représentation d’une servante anglaise. Une esquisse à l’huile non localisée, intitulée La Petite bonne, exposée par Tissot à la Galerie Durand-Ruel au début de 1889 (Exposition de Peintres-Graveurs, n o 316), est probablement apparentée à la manière noire et à l’aquarelle Le Matin. La comparaison de la présente esquisse à l’huile avec la photographie d’album apparentée qui représente la version à l’aquarelle révèle que Tissot a initialement représenté la figure masculine assise portant une gibecière ou une sacoche, alors que, dans la peinture achevée, l’homme est vêtu d’une veste épaisse, ses bottes posées près de la chaise et son fusil de chasse appuyé contre le mur, près de la porte. Il se prépare probablement à enfiler ses bottes, après avoir déjà pris un petit-déjeuner ou déjeuner du matin : un repas servi tard aux invités, avant une partie de chasse matinale. Dans la manière noire et la peinture achevée, le plateau contient une grande tasse en porcelaine pour le chocolat chaud, placée dans la chocolatière en argent à l’arrière, ainsi que des toasts dans un porte-toast en argent, une part de gâteau ou de brioche, une cruche à lait en argent et un pot de confiture en verre. Une théière figure également, pour ceux qui préféreraient le thé, élément absent de l’esquisse de composition, où l’objet principal à gauche du plateau est du pain ou de la brioche. L’horloge dans l’esquisse indique une heure avoisinant dix heures cinquante (aucune horloge n’apparaît dans l’aquarelle photographiée et elle semble cachée sur la manière noire). L’automne au château de Buillon, résidence familiale des Tissot dans le Doubs Le décor du présent tableau est une pièce du château familial des Tissot, le Château de Buillon, près de Besançon, dans le Doubs, au sud-ouest de la France, région giboyeuse célébrée dans de nombreuses peintures de Gustave Courbet, natif du Doubs. Tissot affectionnait l’inclusion de miroirs dans ses peintures, permettant ainsi d’englober des éléments situés au-delà de l’espace représenté. Ici, il montre l’embrasure de la porte ouverte menant à la salle du petit-déjeuner, avec un tableau accroché au mur à côté de la porte. Dans l’esquisse à l’aquarelle, une petite silhouette-portrait est suspendue à côté du miroir tandis que dans la version achevée, elle est rejointe par d’autres petits portraits. L’automne commence à colorer le feuillage des arbres visibles par les portes-fenêtres, mais l’air reste encore assez doux et frais pour aérer la pièce par une grande fenêtre ouverte sur la gauche. Les esquisses à l’huile de Tissot : au cœur du processus de création Tissot réalisa souvent de petites esquisses à l’huile sur des panneaux de bois commercialement préparés, comme pour l’œuvre actuelle. Sur leur surface blanchie, il appliquait une préparation brun-foncé en larges coups de brosse. Ce ton brunâtre lui servait de base en fournissant des demi-teintes et des ombres, lui permettant d’achever une peinture rapidement par touches et coups de pinceau, tantôt pour le détail, tantôt pour les rehauts, tandis que le fond blanc demeurant en réserve apportait une luminosité à travers les traces du pinceau. Cela est perceptible, par exemple, dans la partie supérieure gauche de notre œuvre. Bon nombre de ces esquisses à l’huile figurent dans la vente d’atelier posthume de Tissot en 1903. La provenance Léonce Bénédite Léonce Bénédite (1859–1925), ancien propriétaire de l’œuvre actuelle, était historien de l’art. À partir de 1892, il fut conservateur du musée du Luxembourg, alors dédié à l’art contemporain. Il œuvra à la mise en valeur de la collection et à la présentation de tous les mediums artistiques et d’un large éventail d’artistes, rédigeant de nombreux catalogues, ouvrages et articles. Bénédite connaissait certainement Tissot et son œuvre. Il possédait au moins une autre peinture de l’artiste, une grande esquisse à l’huile sur toile représentant une parade du Lord Mayor à Londres, acquise en 1972 par la City of London auprès de l’un de ses descendants pour la collection de la Guildhall Art Gallery.
