Bill later was most helpful when asked not to paint anything secret. This small design in May 1971 followed what I had asked of him. The design here is a variant of the popular Yam Dreaming. The concentric circles are yam plants, the ovals are the actual yams and the very small circles are the yam seeds. The curved shapes are boomerangs and the spiralling line is running water. I was always moved by the transition from terrible squalor to majestic beauty, as happened with paintings such as this.'     © Billy Stockman Tjapaltjarri/Copyright Agency 2024

Cooee Art Indigenous Fine Art Auction "Anmatjerre artist Billy Stockman Tjapaltjarri was one of the founders of the contemporary desert art movement. He was an energetic campaigner during the establishment phase of the outstation movement, and one of the first to leave the Papunya settlement and move west to live on his tribal lands at a Illili, West of Papunya. Here, he continued painting his Dreamings and instructed younger artists in his ancient knowledge, in particular the Budgerigar, Water, Snake, and Wild Potato Dreamings of his country. Billy Stockman was one of the main protagonists in the creation of the Honey Ant Mural that initiated the Western Desert Art Movement. He had a way of focusing on simple, self-contained vignettes rendered with a symmetry and decorative quality. In this early board created in Papunya between 1972 and 1973, the artist has painted a symbol representing a star with four bullroarers nestling in its arms. The roundels running top to bottom are three corroborree sites and emanating from the upper and lower margins of the work are body paint designs for the ceremony. The inscription verso indicates the painting was originally gifted as a Christmas present from the artist to a Nungurrayi woman; his daughter by kinship. The recipient was most likely a local teacher or community worker whom he had befriended." Contact Cooee Art for more information on this Aboriginal artwork.

Maxie Tjampitjinpa was one of a group of younger Warlpiri artists, including Don Tjungurrayi, Two Bob Tjunurrayi and Michael Nelson Tjakamarra, who started painting at Papunya in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and emerged over the following decade as major painters for Papunya Tula Artists. The current owner of this painting met him while working on a film biography of the Central Australian Aboriginal elder “Nosepeg” Tjupurrula in the mid 1980s .

Anmatjerre artist Billy Stockman Tjapaltjarri was one of the founders of the contemporary desert art movement. He was an energetic campaigner during the establishment phase of the out-station movement, and one of the first to leave the Papunya settlement and move west to live on his tribal lands at a Illili, West of Papunya. Here, he continued painting his Dreamings and instructed younger artists on the ancient knowledge, in particular the Budgerigar, Water, Snake and Wild Potato Dreamings of his country. Billy Stockman was one of the main protagonists in the creation of the Honey Ant Mural that initiated the Western Desert Art Movement. He had a way of focusing on simple, self-contained vignettes rendered with a symmetry and decorative quality. They often contained stylised, naturalistic plants and animals as in this very early work.
