Who is Patrick Tjungurrayi?
Patrick Tjungurrayi was born in Yalangerri near Jupiter Well in Western Australia around 1935. He is a Pintupi and Kukatja speaker, the brother of the late Brandy Tjungurrayi and Elizabeth Nyumi, both major artists from the Balgo community.

As a young man, he walked with his family following the Canning Stock Route north into old Balgo Mission which had been established in 1943. The family would collect rations such as wheat, which they would grind up themselves, and rice, sugar and tea, and then return to the bush. Patrick Tjungurrayi spent his early years travelling between Balgo and Kiwirrkura, moving with his family across their traditional lands.

Patrick Tjungurrayi eventually moved to the Old Balgo Mission, where he worked building stone houses and later the church at the new Balgo site. He met and married Mirriam Oloodoodi, Lucy Yukenbari’s sister, but returned to Kintore shortly after while she remained behind. Through the early 1980s Patrick travelled to Christmas Creek, Docker River and other desert communities. Patrick Tjungurrayi is a senior law man for his country – he began painting in Balgo in 1986, and more recently exhibited with Papunya Tula.

In 2008 Patrick Tjungurrayi won the Western Australian Indigenous Art Award sponsored by the Art Gallery of Western Australia. His work is described as having a powerful presence – masterful and monumental.

OTHER NOTES:
Patrick Oloodoodi Tjungurrayi was highly respected in his community in the areas surrounding the Balgo region, Kiwirrkurra and Kintore region in the Western Desert.

Patrick began painting in the 1980s when his works were included in some of the first public exhibitions for Indigenous art including the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Attracting the attention of many, his unique patterns and distinctive colours set him apart from his counterparts as his interpretations on canvas were seen as a mixture of Balgo influences and the Kiwirrkurra styles combined.

In 2008 Patrick won the Western Australian Indigenous Art Award. Patrick was a well respected elder within his community, dedicating himself in old age to raising awareness of the public health crisis faced by Indigenous people particularly in remote communities.

Lot 37: Patrick Oloodoodi Tjungurrayi - Wirrilpinya, 2009

Auction Date: Oct 20, 2020

Estimate: AUD4,500 - AUD6,500

Description: Patrick Tjungurrayi was born near Jupiter Well and walked into the Old Balgo Mission that was established in 1943. After the community moved to its current location in 1962, he worked constructing the church and other buildings. He painted for Warlayirti artists until the early 1990s, when he moved once more to settle in Kintore. He subsequently painted for Papunya Tula Artists until his death in 2017. This work depicts a site in the Western Desert associated with the mythological Tingari beings who travelled over vast stretches of the country, performing rituals and creating and shaping particular sites. The Tingari Men were usually followed by Tingari Women and accompanied by novices. Their travels and adventures are enshrined in a number of song cycles. These mythologies form part of the teachings of post-initiatory youths, as well as providing explanations for contemporary customs. Stories associated with the Tingari are of a secret sacred nature and only related in full to initiated men....

ESSAY:
Patrick Tjungurrayi was born deep in the Western Desert at Yalangerri (near Jupiter Well) on the Canning Stock Route, about 200 kilometres west of Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay) around 1940 and lived with his family group moving from rockhole to rockhole through Pintupi country. By the 1940s Anangu (people of the Western Desert cultural bloc) were vacating their homelands to various settlements on the fringe of the desert. In the late 1950s Tjungurrayi's group walked out of the desert and settled at Balgo. In the mid-1980s after many years of moving across the country Tjungurrayi returned to Balgo, where he began painting (under the name Patrick Olodoodi Tjungurrayi) for the newly established Warlayirti Artists. This great migration out of the desert during the mid-twentieth century and then back again in the 1980s shaped his life and art. A few years later he moved to Kiwirrkurra and began painting for Papunya Tula Artists but he returned regularly to Balgo. At first he painted in different styles, depending on whether he was in Balgo or Kiwirrkurra, but over time developed a hybrid of the two. In combining the colour of Balgo art with the geometry of the classic Papunya Tula style, his paintings symbolically reunite Anangu culture from around Wilkinkarra.

Tjungurrayi regularly painted his country around Yalangerri and the setting for this painting is the lake at Ngarru, west of Jupiter Well in the Gibson Desert, where a large group of mythical ancestral Tingari Men camped on their journey east to Tarkul and on to Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay). The designs in the painting relate to those used in rituals associated with the Tingari where the law is revealed to initiates. The painting evokes the spiritual nature of the landscape, endowed by the life-sustaining powers of the ancestors.
