YALA YALA GIBBS TJUNGURRAYI c. 1924 - 1998 Wangulkarratja - Muntarri Dreaming 1984 synthetic polymer paint on canvas board The Tingari travelled. Across vast stretches of the Western Desert, these ancestral figures moved through the country performing ceremonies, shaping sites and inscribing the land with the song cycles that Pintupi men carry and transmit today. As the Papunya Tula Artists documentation for this work records, a large group of Tingari Men visited Wangulkarratja, a large rockhole south-west of Kintore, during their travels west to Mantati. Since events associated with the Tingari Cycle are of a sacred nature, no further detail was given. The painting maps that passage. Large concentric circles, each one a rockhole site, are distributed along the vertical axis and connected by lines of dotting that trace the Tingari route across country. The background is filled throughout with parallel wavy lines in deep ochre and brown, the marks of country moving continuously beneath the track. It is a composition of sustained linear authority, the kind of structure Geoff Bardon, who first brought Yala Yala to a painting surface in 1971, described as the work of a man who gave himself to painting with complete seriousness. Yala Yala was born around 1924 south-west of Lake Macdonald and was approximately forty years old when he and his family walked out of their remote homelands to Papunya in 1963. He was among the first artists to develop the grid style of concentric circles and connecting lines that most Pintupi painters had adopted by the end of the 1970s, and by the time of his death in 1998 was one of the last still working in it. His widow, Ningura Napurrula, became one of the leading names in Western Desert art in the years that followed.

As one of the inventors of the ‘Tingari’ painting style, Yala Yala became one of the six artists who received a government allowance to paint full time in the very first years of the painting movement. During this time, his distinctive line drawings helped point Bardon towards some comprehension of the hieroglyphic-like language that underscored the Dreaming stories. With his natural talent for conceiving uncomplicated yet arresting arrangements, Yala Yala’s paintings were at the forefront of this classic Tingari period. His mind-maps of his vast desert homeland emanate a simple grandeur. Loops, spirals and roundels are linked by travelling lines and held in unity with often diffuse background dotting. A restricted range of ochre colours conveys his sense of tethering to the earth, which was also reflected in his working manner. With the other Pintupi artists, he would often sing traditional chants while painting, always using a sense of touch through hands and fingers, to bring the work into being.

The painting depicts designs associated with the rockhole site of Umari, situated in sandhill country, east of Mt. Webb in Western Australia. The Tingari Cycle is a secret song cycle sacred to initiated men. The Tingari are Dreamtime beings who travelled across the landscape performing ceremonies to create and shape the country. They gathered at these sites for Maliera (initiation) ceremonies. The sites take the form of, and are located at, significant rockholes, sand hills, sacred mountains and water soakages in the Western Desert. Tingari may be poetically interpreted as song-line paintings relating to the songs of the people and creation stories of places in Pintupi mythology.

This painting depicts designs associated with, Wirrpi a site associated with the Snake Dreaming on the southern side of Lake Macdonald. In mythological times, a large group of Tingari men came and went underground here, where they remained living. The stories and ceremonies associated with this site are considered secret and sacred and therefore are never revealed to those who are not initiated into this ÔlawÕ. These mythologies from part of the teachings of post-initiatory youths.

Yala Yala Gibbs was one of the Pintupi artists who formed part of the original men's painting group organized at Papunya by Geoffrey Bardon in 1971. His early paintings are characterized by a strictly limited palette, often of red, white and black as in Old Men, 1972, and in Five Women in Kalipinypa Rain Dreaming Country, 1972, in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, illustrated in Ryan, J, Kean, J., et al, Tjukurrtjanu: Origins of Western Desert Art, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 2011, p. 254. Stylistically, Old Men, 1972, relates to Sand mosaic, 1972 (ibid., p. 249) with its dazzling array of meandering and zigzagging lines set against intensely dotted ground. The effect created is one of intense visual drama. According to the documentation accompanying the painting, Old Men, 1972, refers to two old men who were left to die in the desert. The men are represented by the concentric circles that appear at the top of the painting. Below these, ovoid forms radiating from a central roundel symbolize the men's spirits. At the centre left, the series of red arcs represent food that had been left for them. In the lower section, the field of lateral meandering lines encodes the Dreamings that the men share, and their country. WALLY CARUANA
