Born in Kyoto into a family of artisans with a long history in the art of printing, Tokuriki studied at the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Crafts and the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting. He became a key figure in the *sosaku hanga* (creative prints) movement, which emphasized the artist’s role in all stages of the printmaking process, from design to carving and printing. Tokuriki's works often depicted landscapes, traditional scenes, and famous landmarks of Japan, blending modern techniques with classic themes. He was also instrumental in training and inspiring younger artists, contributing significantly to the development and preservation of woodblock art.

Tokuriki Tomikichiro was born in 1902 in Japan, the twelfth generation of a Kyoto artisan family designated the official Kyoto print artists for Honganji Temple. He graduated from Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting in 1924. After World War II, he established the Matsukyu Publishing Company to produce and distribute his own prints and other Shin Hanga and Sosaku Hanga pieces. During the 1960s he held solo exhibitions in Europe and the United States. Tokuriki was an influential figure in Japan’s contemporary print movement, eventually commissioned for numerous temples throughout Japan, including the famous shrines at Ise. He eventually opened a studio to mentor a new generation of artists, including David Kelly and David Stones.             Original woodblock print by Tomikichirô Tokuriki 徳力富吉郎 (1902-2000), titled ‘Kôbe Sanchikataun’ こうべさんちかたうん. A colourful woodblock print featuring a person looking at a statue of a female nude in a dynamic pose. Signed in pencil, and in the print. Colour on mulberry paper. Print: Height 20.5 cm, Width 20.5 cm. Passe-partout: Height 37.2 cm, Width 33.7 cm. In a very good original condition. The print is neatly secured at their upper corners on a passe-partout. CATALOGUE NOTE. Tomikichiro Tokuriki, born on March 22, 1902, in Kyoto, Japan, began his artistic journey under the guidance of his grandfather during his early years. His formal education in the arts commenced with a two-year preparatory class at the Kyoto School of Arts and Crafts, followed by four years of intensive training. Subsequently, he embarked on a three-year program at the Kyoto College of Art, culminating in his graduation from Kyoto Art College in 1923.

            Tomikichiro Tokuriki Japanese, (1902-2000) Yamato Shigisan Shrine / Nikko Toshogu Shrine color woodblock prints Biography from RoninGallery.com: Tomikichiro Tokuriki was a modern Japanese woodblock printmaker. He represented the 12th generation of a Kyoto artisan family designated as the official Kyoto print artists for the famous Honganji Temple. He graduated from Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting in 1924. After World War II, he established the Matsukyu Publishing Company to produce and distribute his own prints and other Shin Hanga and Sosaku Hanga pieces. Tomikichiro Tokuriki was an influential figure in Japan's contemporary print movement. He was the official artist of the Honganji Temple, and his work has been commissioned for various temples throughout Japan, including the famous shrines at Ise. His prints are in the permanent collections of the Museum Fine Arts Boston and the Museum of Modern Art New York.
