  • Francisco Toledo Acrylic on Linoleum "Murcielago (Bat)"
    Feb. 14, 2025

Francisco Toledo Acrylic on Linoleum "Murcielago (Bat)"

    Est: $2,600 - $3,900

Francisco Toledo (Mexican, 1940-2019). "Murcielago (Bat)" acrylic on linoleum, n.d. Hand-signed on verso. A striking piece by Mexican artist Francisco Toledo: a laser cut and hand-painted rendering of a bat. The creature presents with a pair of magnificent, out spread wings, enveloped in lustrous gold pigment that beautifully complements the rich viridian hue of the body and scarlet and aubergine tones of the ears, eyes, and snout. Toledo's art is based on a fantastic realism that reflects a deep appreciation for, and astute observation of, nature, in particular, animals often not associated with beauty, such as insects, toads, and bats, as seen here. Size of piece: 18" W x 6" H (45.7 cm x 15.2 cm); of frame: 23.25" W x 11" H (59.1 cm x 27.9 cm) Francisco Toledo was born on July 17, 1940 in Juchitan, Mexico. As a young man, he studied at the Taller Libre de Grabado in Mexico City, where he met the famous Oaxacan artist Rufino Tamayo. At the tender age of nineteen, he had his first exhibitions in Mexico City and Fort Worth, Texas. In 1960, Toledo moved to Paris where he developed his signature style and worked in Stanley William Hayter's studio. Five years later, Toledo returned to Mexico and began creating compositions that speak to his Zapotec heritage - living and working in his native Juchitan, Mexico. Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
