SOICHIRO TOMIOKA: ON DEPARTURE FROM NEW YORK By Soichiro Tomioka (1922-1994), signed Soichiro Tomioka Japan, 1960s Firmly mounted on cardboard and set inside a frame, behind glass. Depicting an abstract painting of a view of bare trees having lost their foliage in the dead of winter, against a beige-brown ground. Inscriptions: To the bottom, signed Soichiro Tomioka. SIZE of the sheet 27 x 24 cm, SIZE incl. frame 42.5 x 35 cm Condition: Excellent condition with wear and little rubbing. The frame with signs of wear and use. Soichiro Tomioka (1922-1994) was born in Niigata in what is now the city of Joetsu. Tomioka was famous for his oil landscapes. Tomioka first gained recognition as an artist in the 1960s while working in advertising at Mitsubishi. He soon began to showcase his burgeoning talent at exhibitions worldwide, including Sao Paolo and New York. Tomioka later received an artist’s fellowship and moved to New York City, where he lived for seven years. However, by 1972, Tomioka found himself wanting to rediscover his roots, and so returned to Japan. Tomioka was known for his use of a famous type of paint he had developed himself, which became known as “Tomioka White.” While painting stark white snowy landscapes, he wanted a more vibrant white that would never age or turn yellow. He collected and tested various types of paint from around the world for about two years, before collaborating with a paintmaker that could finally make his vision come to life. TOMIOKA, Soichiro (1922-1994). Untitled (Mountains). 20th century. Oil on canvas. Framed, 21 ½ x 25”. SIGNED at lower right. Vincent Price Collection (Sears, Roebuck, and Co.) label affixed to verso; “Funaoka” stamped on verso. Soichiro Tomioka’s artistic style was born out of his love for the snow swept landscapes of his youth. Born in Niigata Prefecture, Japan in 1922, Tomioka moved to New York City in 1965 but returned to Japan seven years later, where he perfected a non-discoloring and non-cracking white oil paint which he named “Tomioka White.” He established the Tomioka White Museum of Art in 1990 as a final home for his vast collection of original works.
