Girl with Flowers Signed lower right Ink on paper, 63.9 x 49.7 cm Note: No other woman has had so much influence on Dutch culture in the first half of the 20th century as Charley Toorop. She had strong friendly relationships with A. Roland Holst, Henriëtte Roland Holst, Arthur Lehning, Marsman, Mondriaan, Van der Leck, Rädecker, and Zadkine, among others. She made contacts everywhere and helped others experience new influences. Her studio was a meeting point for many in the cultural world. Toorop was not only influential as the central figure in the cultural world; as a painter, she has also left her traces. As a self-taught artist, Charley Toorop developed a highly personal, robust painting style. She mostly painted portraits, such as this present lot. From the beginning of her artistic career, Charley Toorop depicted people with unnaturally large eyes and a piercing gaze. When she was living in Paris in the 1920s, she visited the Musée Guimet, where she became acquainted with the ancient Egyptian tradition of Fayoum portraiture, in which deceased persons were depicted naturalistically in a frontal position with large staring eyes. Toorop was greatly inspired, and from then on, she painted her sitters in a predominantly frontal position and again with that fixed gaze. This woman is depicted in a way that is very typical of Toorop's: the eyes are unsymmetrical, as in many of Toorop’s portraits. She did not paint people as any more attractive than they were. Indeed, she would often accentuate asymmetries or furrows in a face. In this way, she did not create an idealised portrait but rather placed emphasis on authenticity and personality. According to A.M. Hammacher, who knew the artist personally, Toorop's strength lay in her successful attempt to wrest Dutch art out of the sphere of intimacy, transforming objects and people into monumental phenomena. This statement can certainly be demonstrated by the present lot. * Condition report available upon request

Provenance: -With Kunsthandel Nieuwenhuizen Segaar, The Hague. -Collection Mr. Jacob Mees, Rotterdam. -Auction, in purpose of the Koningin Wilhelminafonds, Arti Amsterdam, 8 March 1956, lot 163, where acquired by the family of the present owner. As the leading lady of Dutch art in the first half of the twentieth century, Charley Toorop had an enormous influence on Dutch culture. Being the daughter of Jan Toorop (1858-1928), she was already born into an artistic family, yet her inspiring ideas about art made her well connected with her contemporaries. Famous painters such as Van der Leck, Mondriaan, Zadkine and Rädecker often visited her studio, which became a meeting point for many artists of that time. She was respected for her uncompromising direct style, which is clearly visible in the present lot ‘Doodshoofd, beeldje en rozen’ from 1934. The direct and robust strokes of her brush emphasise the strength of her image. In her still lifes, the depicted objects become concepts rather than just a collection of different things. The present painting combines her fierce realistic approach with the symbolic meaning of a vanitas, showing the transience of life and certainty of death. Accompanied by the catalogues of the above mentioned exhibitions (1951, 1982 and 1994).

Besançon, Amsterdam EXHIBITED Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum, Charley Toorop, 1927 no. 43 Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum, Breitner tussen de schilders van Amsterdam, 1957 LITERATURE Nico J. Brederoo, Charley Toorop, Dordrecht 1982, p. 271, no.205, illustrated A.M. The Hague 1927, no.7 NOTE As a penetrating observer of the human form, Charley Toorop, daughter of the famous Dutch artist Jan Toorop, is known for her portraits in which she usually depicted herself or figures that surrounded her, such as her children, friends and colleague artists. Contrary to her numerous self-portraits, Charley developed an interest for Dutch modern architecture in the mid-twenties. Paintings from this period are most closely affined to the German 'neue sachlichen'. Scenes of suburban streets, boarding houses for the homeless, industrial harbours and the nightlife of bars and music-halls are painted a specific detailed lively manner. In the realistic registration of her observations Charley leaves out the critical irony of life, contrary to the German artist of this time. Her unscrupulous realism in her paintings has a magical nature. It is where Charley as an observer, which she mentions in several letters to fellow artists, often wonders if the natural appearance reflects reality? One can ask the question if perceptiveness converts to an inaccurate or unnatural presence. For Charley's paintings we can say that the unreal state is what becomes real in her paintings. The colourful street, shaded stadiums and the typical Dutch houses of Amsterdam provided Charley with ample opportunities to the her new fascination for architecture. Because of the great appeal of this city Charley moved in 1926 to the Leidsegracht 48 in Amsterdam. It is there where she captured every aspect of urban life in a similar way as she did in her portraits. The present work Leidsegracht shares this studied attention to individual forms in the presentation of the whole. Despite being the result of many hours of careful observation and the lack of portrayed individuals Charley manages to make the urban street life seem alive.

Still life with newspaper signed with initials 'C.T.' (lower right) oil on canvas 60 x 50.5 cm. Executed circa 1926 PROVENANCE A gift from the artist to the painter Thijs Rinsema in 1926 (in exchange for a box handmade by Rinsema), thence by descent to his brother in law. Anon. sale Sotheby's Amsterdam, 6 April 1987, lot.no 38, where acquired by the present owner. NOTES As in all her subjects, Charley Toorop presents her still lifes with uncompromising directness. The very simplicity generates a strength infused with mystical connotations, but without making an explicit religious statement. Her objects transcend their everyday manifestations; they become concepts in stead of randomly arranged objects. Her stark style, her large, sharply defined shapes and muted colours imbue her subjects with a certain stubbornness. Yet, the fact that these potent, vigorous pictures are the work of a woman unwillingly changes the way we perceive them. Though her subjects and style were entrenched in the years of the interbellum, her work is a testament to her personal life and her leftwing political sympathies, as is probably reflected in the present lot by for instance the communist magazine Tribune, the red banner and the rooted up fields in the background. According to A.M. Hammacher, who knew the artist personally, Toorop's strength lay in her successful attempt to wrest Dutch art out of the sphere of intimacy, transforming objects and people into monumental phenomena. The present lot Still life with newspaper is a typical example of this quotation.

Witte Seringenboom signed 'C.Toorop' (lower left), and signed again, dated and inscribed with title 'Zomer 1939' (on the reverse) oil on canvas 100 x 80 cm. Executed circa 1939. PROVENANCE J. Moltzer, Rio de Janeiro LITERATURE A.M. Hammacher, Charley Toorop, Rotterdam 1952, no. 183 Nico J. Brederoo, Charley Toorop, Utrecht 1982, p. no. 361 NOTES The blossom paintings are a consistent part in Charley Toorop's oeuvre. Since 1934 she painted the fruittrees in her garden almost twice every year. In spring with their blossoms and in late summer when the fruit was ripe and the trees were full of apples and pears. It seems that she wanted to celebrate the new season and tried to stress the cycle of life. Characteristic in these works are the compact and close-up compositions. The canvas is completely filled with a tangle of branches.
