Inchiostro, colori tenui e oro su carta, nel formato della coppia di paraventi pieghevoli a sei ante, entrambi firmati con sigillo. 170,00 x 378,00 cm I paesaggi di stile cinese raffigurati su questi due paraventi si ispirano a un celebre racconto scritto da Tao Yuanming (365-427), tra i maggiori autori nella storia della letteratura classica cinese. La vicenda narra di un pescatore che scopre un boschetto di peschi in fiore, oltre il quale si apre un villaggio idilliaco, dove uomini e donne vivono in perfetta armonia con la natura, ignari delle problematiche del mondo esterno. Nonostante la richiesta degli abitanti di custodire il segreto di quel paradiso terrestre, il pescatore decide di rivelare la sua scoperta; tuttavia, nessuno riuscirà mai più a ritrovare il passaggio che conduceva a quel remoto e bucolico villaggio. Nato a Kurashiki, Okamoto Toyohiko è un esponente di spicco della scuola Shijo, allievo prediletto di Goshun, specializzato soprattutto nella pittura di paesaggio. Questa coppia di paraventi è stato esposta presso il Museo di Arte Orientale di Torino (MAO) dal 2010 al 2024. (2) - Ink, soft colors and gold on paper, in the format of a pair of six-panel folding screens, both signed with a seal. 66.93 x 148.82 in. The Chinese-style landscapes depicted on these two screens are inspired by a famous tale written by Tao Yuanming (365-427), one of the greatest authors in the history of classical Chinese literature. The story tells of a fisherman who discovers a grove of blossoming peach trees that leads to an idyllic village, where men and women live in complete harmony with nature, oblivious to the problems of the rest of the world. Defying the villagers' demand of this paradise on earth, the fisherman revealed his discovery to everyone, but no one was ever able to find the passage to the village again. Born in Kurashiki, Okamoto Toyohiko is a leading exponent of the Shijo school, a favourite pupil of Goshun, specialized above all in landscape painting. This pair of screens was exhibited at the Museum of Oriental Art in Turin (MAO) from 2010 to 2024. (2)

The prunus is a symbol often seen in Chinese and Japanese literati objects and paintings, resembling the fungus thought to produce the elixir of life. The scroll was painted with sumi ink on paper and features an inscription saying the work was created in the Year of the Metal Ox during the Tenpo era (1830-1844), Chinese New Year, which would mean this scroll painting dates to 1841. It is signed by OKAMOTO Toyohiko with two seals, one reading Toyohiko on the top and another reading Yasuhiko, the artists other studio name, on the bottom. Condition: The scroll is in good condition with signs of age. Insect damage is visible in the central part of the scroll leading down from the honshi (painted area of the scroll) to the bottom of the mounting. The dimensions are 114.8 x 62.48 cm (length x width). Toyohiko became a student of MATSUMURA Goshun in Kyoto at the age of 25 and soon after, his skills flourished. Toyohiko's fame as a painter spread throughout the capital, rivaling that of the established artist KISHI Ganku. By about age 30, Toyohiko was given an opportunity to sit in a gathering with noted artists such as TANI Buncho and KISHI Ganku and poets TACHIBANAChikage and KAGAWA Kageki, and presented a painting during this event. It is thought that thanks to this opportunity, Toyohiko was commissioned to produce works for the Shugakuin Rikyu palace in the north-eastern section of the imperial capital. Although OKAMOTO Toyohiko is categorized as a Shijo school artist, he inherited the styles used by MARUYAMA Okyo, the founder of the Maruyama school, and YOSA Buson from his master MATSUMURA Goshun.
