        JOŽA ÚPRKA 1861 - 1940 - GIRL WITH A JUG

        Est: -

Jože Uprka is one of the few Czech artists at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries who emphasized ethnographic themes in his work, namely the region he knew intimately - the Moravian Slovácko region. His paintings combine the effort for an ethnographically accurate record of folk costumes and modern painting techniques. Painter and graphic artist with a special artistic expression, studied with prof. F. Čermák at the Prague Academy. The beginning of his work is connected with a three-year study at the academy in Munich, where he collected valuable suggestions from prof. N. Gysis and later O. Sitz. After a short period in Prague associated with his registration with M. Pirner, he returned to his homeland in Moravian Slovakia at the end of the 1980s, which, with its color and customs, became its main source of inspiration. His masterpieces radiate joy of color, joy of movement, expression of vital forces and life optimism. Technique: Oil on wood, Signed: Lower right "JU"

        A COUPLE IN FOLK COSTUME

        Est: -

Joža Uprka’s oeuvre is an eternal, faithful reflection of reality, in which the artist strove to maintain the beauty of folk costume, festivals and customs. A Couple in Folk Costume, a beautiful example of Uprka’s relationship to nature and to folk customs, also perfectly demonstrates the artist’s love for folklore. Uprka was one of the strongest and most original figures in Bohemian visual art in the late 19th and early 20th century. A painter and printmaker with a distinctive artistic expression, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under Professor František Čermák. His early work is connected with the three years he spent studying at the Academy in Munich, where he gathered valuable inspiration from Professors Gysis and Sitz. Following a brief time in Prague associated with studies under Maximilián Pirner, in the late 1880s he returned to his home in Moravian Slovakia, whose color and customs became his primary source of inspiration. His masterpieces glow with the joy of color, of movement, and of the expression of vital energy and optimism towards life.

        A WOMAN FROM MAŘATICE

        Est: -

Oil on canvas. Signed lower right: “JU”. Joža Uprka is one of few Czech artists from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries who accented ethnographic topics in his work; his focus was on a region with which he was intimately familiar – Moravian Slovakia. Although often considered a purely Moravian painter, he had strong ties to Prague, Munich and even Paris. He lived and studied in these cities of art, and he made good use of his experience after he returned to Moravia. His paintings featuring folk and folklore themes garnered attention in Paris, where they were exhibited at the Salon in 1894. This painting of a young woman in folk costume, carrying a glass on a try in one hand and a Habán pitcher in the other, brings together ethnographic realism with elements of modern art, which can primarily be seen here in the execution of the painting.

/ After 1900 / Oil on canvas. Signed lower right "Joža Uprka", artist's inscription in pencil on the reverse. / 51 x 65 cm This entirely unique painting without figurative staffage is by the excellent Czech painter Joz?a Uprka. He is primarily known as a painter of folklore themes and portraits of people in folk costumes. At the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries, he accented the ethnography of a region with which he was intimately familiar – Moravian Slovakia. The view through blooming peach trees to a golden field and hamlet with a small church is a work celebrating springtime and exuding peace and harmony. From his work with color and Impressionist technique one can recognize the lessons he learned in Paris in 1892 and 1893.
