This painting is part of a widespread practice in European painting in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century: the representation of elite women as figures from classical mythology. This iconographic strategy, far from being a mere decorative whim, responded to a sophisticated symbolic construction of female identity in court and post-revolutionary culture. By adopting the appearance of a goddess or heroine, in this case Erígone, associated with the myth of the vine and filial tragedy, the portrayed woman was linked to values such as ideal beauty, virtue, fertility or even poetic melancholy, elevating her image to the plane of the timeless. Vallin's career provides a better understanding of the stylistic context of the work. Trained at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture from a very young age thanks to the support of Gabriel Doyen, and a disciple of artists such as Nicolas Guy Brenet, Antoine François Callet and Antoine Renou, Vallin was formed within the French academic tradition. However, his production reveals an evolution towards a more lyrical and sensual language, especially in his scenes of nymphs and bacchantes, where the female figure is integrated into idealized landscapes bathed in a golden and diffuse light. This sensibility, influenced in part by painters such as Claude-Joseph Vernet and Jean-Joseph-Xavier Bidauld, is clearly manifested in the atmospheric treatment and the chromatic delicacy of the portrait. In the present painting, the lady appears half-length, turning gently towards the viewer with a serene and slightly insinuating expression. The crown of vine leaves and the bunch of grapes she holds refer directly to the Dionysian universe and, by extension, to the myth of Erigone. These attributes not only identify the character, but also introduce a symbolic reading linked to wine, nature and life cycles. The pictorial technique shows a refined workmanship: the soft flesh tones, modeled through subtle transitions of light, contrast with the dark background that highlights the figure and creates an effect of intimacy. The use of glazes and the attention to the nuances of color reveal the quality of the French school of the period, characterized by its balance between academic rigor and decorative grace. The portrait also reflects a hybridization between genres: it is not only an individual portrait, but also an allegorical scene. This crossover allowed the ladies of high society to project an idealized image of themselves, in keeping with neoclassical tastes and with the renewed interest in antiquity following the boom in archaeological excavations and the spread of classical culture. In this sense, the work is situated in a moment of aesthetic transition, where the elegance of the Ancien Régime coexists with the new sensibilities of the revolutionary and Napoleonic periods.

VENUS UND ADONIS Öl auf Leinwand. 32 x 40 cm. Verso auf dem Keilrahmen alter bedruckter Aufkleber. Der antike Mythos, durch die Metamorphosen des Ovid überliefert, berichtet von der Liebe der Venus zu dem Jäger Adonis. Oft wird die Göttin dargestellt, wie sie Adonis von der Jagd abzuhalten sucht, auf der er zu Tode kommt. Das Paar wird jedoch hier in klassizistischer Auffassung und Malweise in einem Hain gezeigt, mit einem Venustempel im Hintergrund. Jagdspeer, Horn und nicht zuletzt die beiden Jagdhunde, mit denen ein Knäblein spielt, erklären die Figuren attributiv. Das Liebesthema wird zudem durch die beiden Schwäne rechts im Bild konnotiert. Der Maler, dem das Bild aufgrund der hohen Qualität durchaus zugewiesen werden kann, trat bereits im Alter von 15 Jahren in die königliche Akademie ein. 1779 wurde er von dem Historienmaler Gabriel Doyen sowie von Valle gefördert, bevor er ins Atelier von Drevet und später von Antoine Renou ging. 1791 debutierte Vallin mit Landschaften. Beeinflusst von Vernet wandte er sich vermehrt mythologischen Themen zu. Vallin zählt somit zu den Malern der französischen Schule, in der Nachfolge von Drevet. Er stellte im Pariser Salon aus und war von Prud‘hon beeinflusst. Bilder seiner Hand in mehreren öffentlichen Museen Frankreichs. Provenienz: Wohl aus dem Nachlass von Anatole France (laut rückseitigem Aufkleber). Anmerkung: Sein Gemälde „Bacchantes dans un paysage“ (1790-1795, Musée des beaux arts de Quimper, Inv.Nr. 873-1-804) zeigt eine enge Verwandtschaft mit dem vorliegenden Werk. (14418322) (11)

Öl auf Leinwand. 52,5 × 63,3 cm (oval). Provenienz: Europäische Privatsammlung. Nach seiner Ausbildung an der Académie Royale beim Kupferstichkünstler Claude Drevet (1697–1781) sowie bei Antoine-François Callet (1741–1823), der für seine Porträt- und Genre-Malerei bekannt war, nahm Jaque Antoine Vallin 1791 zum ersten Mal am Salon teil. Neben Landschaftsdarstellungen im Still von Claude Joseph Vernet (1714–1789) und Joseph-Xavier Bidauld (1758–1846), zeichnete sich Vallins künstlerisches Schaffen ebenso durch Porträtmalerei aus. Seinen Ruf begründeten ferner seine phantasievollen neoklassischen Genrebilder, die mit ihrer feinen Ausarbeitung und leichter Sinnlichkeit überzeugten. Weibliche Motive in Form von Halbkörper- oder Ganzkörperakten, wie das hier angebotene Werk, und die damit verbundenen erotische Themen, fanden dabei ihre Inspiration in Jean-Honoré Fragonards (1732–1806) Schaffen und stiessen besonders auf dem französischen Kunstmarkt auf breites Interesse. Private Collection, New York. Footnote: Note Son on an engraver, Jacques-Antoine Vallin entered the Académie Royale de Peinture at a young age. Vallin made a name for himself through the highly delicate, and seductive portraits, genre scenes and mythological episodes he painted throughout his career, as shown here. The present work is a newly surfaced, and rare canvas from the early 1790s - a moment when Vallin started to exhibited at the Paris Salon. It depicts a drunken Silenus, Bacchus' own tutor and companion, surrounded by Pan and woodland muses who care to the god inside a forest clearing. The work is consistent with the light-hearted, openly sensual and often mytholigical themes adopted by painters at the end of the 18th century. Yet, its large scale, attention to detail and precise rendering of the shimmering fabrics and the glistening skins announce the art of the early 19th century, that of David and Prud'hon, which speak to the artist's refinement and sense of artistic change.

Artist's Biography (Adapted from the National Gallery, London): Jacques Vallin entered the school of the French Academy in Paris in about 1775 where he was instructed by Drevet, Callet and Renou. A. Vallin h: 75 w: 65 cm Commentaire : Fils d'un ciseleur quai de la Mégisserie, Jacques-Antoine Vallin est protégé par Gabriel-François Doyen et entre très jeune à l'Académie Royale. Elève de Drevet, d'Antoine-François Callet et d'Antoine Renou, Jacques-Antoine Vallin traite tous les genres, le portrait, les thèmes mythologiques et le paysage. Son art toujours gracieux est influencé par Pierre Paul Prud'hon. Notre tableau, totalement inédit, représente un rare sujet : le peintre Apelle fait poser la magnifique courtisane grecque Phryné nue, les pieds dans l'eau comme émergeant des flots telle la déesse de la beauté Vénus. Une servante tient avec beaucoup de délicatesse un petit vase à onguent dont elle verse le contenu sur les mains de la jeune femme. La belle hétaïre fut l'un des modèles les plus appréciés de l'Antiquité grecque et aurait ainsi posé pour le sculpteur Praxitèle pour sa célèbre Aphrodite de Cnide ainsi que pour Apelle. Ces grands artistes auront également été les amants de Phryné. Le sujet ici choisi par Jacques-Antoine Vallin est d'une grande rareté et témoigne d'une recherche particulièrement soignée de la part de l'artiste pour proposer une œuvre à la fois savante et d'une grande séduction.
