Willem van de Velde II was one of the most outstanding Dutch 17th century marine painters. His production is part of the classic period of Dutch landscape painting and his atmospheric effects are unparalleled in the compositions of earlier artists. To elaborate his oil paintings, Van de Welde took notes from life, and even traveled with the fleet to have a direct reference of the events that took place in the naval battles, as his father Willem Van de Velde I had already done, of whom he was a disciple. It follows that all the elements related to navigation, such as the direction of the wind that swells the sails or moves the clouds, are taken into account, as well as the effects of light on the water. All this is more than evident in this impressive marina. On this occasion, the calm waters escape to a misty horizon. The commercial and warships have been accurately depicted. This navy can be compared to the one in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, entitled "The Dutch Navy Fleet at Goeree" (ca.1672). It shows a similar distribution of vessels in a calm sea, whose surface reverberates myriads of tonal ranges that veer from blue to silver. In the foreground are the larger vessels, whose sails, masts and flags sway in the breeze. The ships in the background can be glimpsed with less definition, as a result of a magnificent atmospheric treatment. Boats and sailboats full of figures alternate with the large ships. The painting under consideration here devotes more space to the sky, taking a low point of view, which allows the author to masterfully capture the density and movement of the clouds. Likewise, the ships do not fire blanks as in Thyssen's painting, where the smoke obscures the horizon line, which does not occur in this painting, and the atmospheric perspective is displayed in greater depth. In short, the careful drawing is balanced with a natural ability to compose enveloping scenographies. The tactile and plastic quality of the scene reaches high levels of sublimity, in keeping with the marine painting that was developing in Flanders at the same time. Willem van de Velde, the Younger was baptized in Leiden in 1633; his father Willem van de Velde, the Elder was a well-known marine painter. The family settled in Amsterdam during the year 1636, when a second son, Adriaen, who also took up painting, was born. Willem II initially trained with his father, and according to the Dutch biographer Arnold Houbraken later completed his studies in the workshop of Simon de Vlieger in Weesp. Father and son used to sail taking sketches from life, drawings that Willem junior continued to use for his paintings throughout his career. Van de Velde II's earliest known works, dating from the 1650s, depict groups of ships at rest in calm waters, dominated by silvery tones reminiscent of Simon de Vlieger's work. In 1652 Willem van de Velde the Younger married Petronella le Maire in Amsterdam, and eighteen months later he began separation proceedings. He remarried, in second marriage, to Magdalene Walravens in 1656. The Van de Velde worked in Amsterdam until 1672, year in which the war with England was resumed and the French invaded Holland, moment in which they moved to London. In England they enjoyed the protection of the Duke of York and King Charles II, who paid each of them an annual salary of one hundred pounds sterling; to the father for "occupying himself and making the delineation of sea battles" and to his son "for coloring the aforementioned drawings". This collaboration was based at the Queen's House in Greenwich, where the van de Velde's ran a workshop. The subjects of Willem van de Velde, the Younger changed after his departure for England, where he began to replace groups of anonymous ships with specific vessels of the royal fleet or war frigates, while the calm waters of his early works were replaced by scenes of storms and shipwrecks. After his father's death, Willem the Younger continued to run a large workshop full of assistants and apprentices, including his sons Willem III and Cornelis van de Velde, Johan van der Hage and Pieter Monamy, but his main imitators are to be found among the English marine painters of the 18th century.

Willem van de Velde the Younger represents like no other the prestigious reputation of Dutch marine painting as well as the eventful artistic and political relations between the two nations. He initially made a career in Amsterdam and later entered the service of King Charles II of England together with his father, the elder Willem van de Velde. The art historiographer Arnold Houbraken gives us an impression of the maritime and artistic rivalry between the Netherlands and England, who mocked the fact that the English bought the good works of Willem van de Velde from the Dutch: “The English value his works very highly and have bought them up from time to time in Holland, depriving us of the pleasant sight and bringing them away…” (Houbraken 1719, II, p. 327). This depiction of a Bezan yacht, which would also find its way to England, is a masterpiece by Willem van de Velde from his time in Amsterdam. The sea is shown with light waves. On the right you can see the Bezan yacht, the protagonist of this picture. The yacht has a round-topped tafferel decorated with openwork carvings, probably depicting a lion, while the transom shows a dolphin. The yacht flies a large flag with four light green stripes on a white background. According to Robinson (Robinson, op. cit., p. 769), this cannot be identified; it is probably a private yacht that belongs to the owner of the ship on the horizon towards which the yacht is heading. To the right you can see more boats and ships in the water. According to Robinson, three versions of this composition have survived. He regards the present work to be the highest quality iteration (Robinson, op. cit., p. 770), and dates it to around 1655. The piece indeed shows the early mastery achieved by Willem van der Velde, who had learned from the best marine painters of his time - his own father and, as Houbraken reports, Simon de Vlieger. The way in which the ships are staggered throughout the space to evoke the vastness of the ocean; how the arrangement of the masts – sometimes vertically, sometimes diagonally – makes the waves more tangible; how the cumulus clouds in the sky convey the atmosphere of the open sea; the way in which the direction of the lighting brings the Bezan yacht into the viewer’s focus - all of this shows the skills of the young artist, who had already established himself as a marine painter in Amsterdam at an early age. 1655 was also the year in which he acquired a prominent neighbour, none other than Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, the hero of the Anglo-Dutch naval wars.

Während im Hintergrund links ein weiteres Segelschiff vor Anker liegt, sind im Vorder- und Mittelgrund kleinere Boote zu erkennen, teils mit Lasten, teils mit Menschen beladen, die gewissermassen die Staffage vorgeben. Skizzenhaft angelegt, ist die detailreiche Komposition doch so ausgewogen, dass sie direkt als Vorlage für ein Gemälde gedient haben könnte. Erinnert sei etwa an van de Veldes berühmtes Gemälde "Der Kanonenschuss" im Amsterdamer Rijksmuseum. A mighty warship arrives in the harbour of a city where there is a great deal of activity. The sails are reefed and a cannon salute is fired in greeting, causing powerful smoke to rise. While another sailing ship is anchored in the background on the left, smaller boats can be seen in the foreground and centre ground, some loaded with cargo and others with people, providing the staffage, so to speak. Although sketched, the detailed composition is so well-balanced that it could have served directly as a model for a painting. It is reminiscent of van de Velde's famous painting "The Cannon Shot" in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum. The album page slightly foxed in the margins, but overall beautiful in its pristine condition Erläuterungen / Comments Wie schon sein Vater, war auch der jüngere Willem ein "Schiffszeichner" – eine zeitgenössische Bezeichnung, die nicht wörtlich zu nehmen ist und auch die malerische Tätigkeit miteinbezieht. Im Winter 1672/1673 wanderten die Van de Veldes samt ihrer Familien nach England aus. Das vorangegangene Jahr wird in der niederländischen Geschichte als "Rampjaar" ("Katastrophenjahr") bezeichnet. In diesem Jahr erklärten England, Frankreich, Köln und Münster der Republik der Sieben Vereinigten Niederlande den Krieg. Die bis zum Ende des Jahrzehnts anhaltenden kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen werden gemeinhin als der Beginn des Niedergangs des niederländischen Goldenen Zeitalters gesehen. Zum Glück für die Künstler bestand auch in England ein reges Interesse an Marinestücken. Ab 1674 erhielten Vater und Sohn vom englischen König einen jährlichen Sold von 100 Pfund für Gemälde, Zeichnungen und Skizzen von Seeschlachten. Auch andere Adlige meldeten Interesse an ihrem Werk an. Es war ihnen auch erlaubt, einige Räume im Queen’s House zu nutzen, dem königlichen "House of Delights", in dem eine Reihe von Künstlern und Handwerkern ihre Ateliers hatten. Als Hofmaler waren die Van de Veldes bei jeder maritimen Aktivität des Hofes anwesend und ihre Privilegien wurden auch unter späteren Königen – und für den jüngeren Willem auch noch nach dem Tod des Vaters im Jahr 1693 – aufrechterhalten. Like his father, the younger Willem was also a "ship draughtsman" - a contemporary term that is not to be taken literally and also includes his painting activities. In the winter of 1672/1673, the Van de Veldes and their families emigrated to England. The previous year is known in Dutch history as the "Rampjaar" ("Disaster Year"). In this year, England, France, Cologne and Münster declared war on the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. The armed conflicts that lasted until the end of the decade are generally seen as the beginning of the decline of the Dutch Golden Age. Die nur zart angedeutete Vorzeichnung ist mit grosser Leichtigkeit mit dem Pinsel ausformuliert. Gewaltige, im Wind flatternde Fahnen weisen die Schiffe als niederländisch aus. Auch die Segel sind vom Wind gebläht, während das Meer überraschend ruhig wirkt. Darüber bleibt der Bereich des Himmels gänzlich ungestaltet und wolkenlos. The panorama-like sheet shows numerous ships grouped around an imposing two-decker. Van de Velde must have observed such scenes, but the present drawing is structured as a pictorial composition. The delicate preliminary sketch is elaborated with great ease using a brush. Huge flags flapping in the wind identify the ships as Dutch. The sails are also billowed by the wind, while the sea appears surprisingly calm. Above, the sky remains completely unshaped and cloudless. Drawings such as these were sketches of ideas, which Van de Velde made in large numbers to capture important details of individual ships and boats, which then found their way into his elegant seascapes. The accuracy of his observations contributed significantly to the convincing effect of his paintings. In this sheet, executed quickly and with great confidence, we see a large fishing boat surrounded by several small boats used for unloading goods. On the port side of the large boat, four sailors can be seen tending to the sails and ropes.
