Attributed to Frans van der Mijn (Flemish, 1719-1793) Portrait of a young lady, half-length, in a silver dress and silk hat with pink rose, holding a hoe bears signature and date '...Van der Mijn 1746' l.l., oil on canvas, painted oval (77 x 64cm; framed 92 x 78cm) Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 13 November 1991, lot 37; the estate of Howard Godfrey. Footnote: In mezzotints by James McArdell and Richard Purcell after a very similar portrait by Van der Mijn the sitter is identified in the British Museum and National Portrait Gallery collections as Lucy Cooper. Condition Report: Craquelure. In our opinion presents well overall when viewed on the wall. Not examined under UV light, for a full report please contact the department.

Frans van der Myn, Dutch 1719-1783- Portrait of a gentleman, half-length, wearing a grey coat, a pink waistcoat, and a white stock, in a feigned oval; oil on canvas, signed and indistinctly dated 'Fr: van der Myn / 1764[?].', bears label for Hahn Fine Art Dealers with printed inscription which reads 'Portrait of a gentleman / Died in London 20th / August 1783' attached to the lower stretcher bar, 76 x 63.5 cm. Provenance: with Hahn Fine Art Dealers, London. Private Collection, UK. Note: Van der Myn (also spelt Mijn) was part of an artistic dynasty, as the son of Herman van der Myn (1684-1741) (court painter to Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm), nephew of Agatha van der Myn (1700-1776/96), and brother of Cornelia (1709-1789) and George van der Myn (1723-1763). After working in Amsterdam and The Hague in the 1740s, he settled in England, principally working on commissions for sitters in London and Norwich. According to Johan van Gool (1685-1763), his skill as an artist was undermined by his 'mean address and vulgar manners', which meant that 'he never acquired the practice which he might otherwise have obtained'. The present work is a particularly fine example of van der Myn's dignified portraits. His best-known painting is perhaps his portrait of a lady with a fly on her shoulder, serving as an 'Allegory of Touch', which sold at Christie's, London, on 8 December 2010, lot 131 (£25,000).

Frans van der Mijn (1719-1783) Portrait of a lady, possibly an actress, half length leaning on a console, holding ostrich feathers and an oval miniature of a gentleman oil on canvas, in a Kent style frame 89 x 71.5cm Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 24 November 1999, lot 703 The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. There is some mould forming on the reverse of the canvas. The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane. The paint layers are stable and secure but have suffered from loss in the past, mainly located around the edges of the work. Areas of overpaint are slightly mottled but acceptable. The varnish is clear with some matte patches. Framed 111.5 x 101.5cm
