WILLEM VAN HERP (Antwerp, c. 1614 - 1677). "St. Anne, the Virgin and Child". Oil on panel. With label of Patrimonio Nacional on the back. Unsigned. Measurements: 49.50 x 64.50 cm. Painting of devotional theme, representing in a symmetrical and ordered composition to the Holy Family. The Child Jesus occupies the compositional center and is supported in arms by Mary, who wears red tunic and mantle, colors of the Passion and Purity respectively and Santa Ana, who covers her hair with a handkerchief that enhances her facial oval. In the upper part of the composition appears God prepresented as the dove, closing the composition of the work. Willem van Herp was a Flemish Baroque painter who specialized in religious paintings and small cabinet paintings with "low quality" genre scenes. He ran a large workshop and, through his good connections with Antwerp, art dealers helped spread the Flemish Baroque style internationally. Willem van Herp was long believed to have been a pupil of Peter Paul Rubens because many of Rubens' stylistic motifs can be seen in his paintings, and he retouched copies of Rubens for the art dealer Matthijs Musson. It is said that he exhibited for the first time together with the minor artists Damiaan Wortelmans II and Hans Biermans. Van Herp may have spent some time abroad after his training and was listed as an independent master in the Guild of St. Luke from 1637. He spent his entire career in Antwerp. He was the teacher of Norbertus van Herp and Melchior Hamers. It is not possible to discern a development in his style as he only came out with a few of his images. His style is characterized by his somewhat mannered way of drawing and the expressiveness of the figures. His large output points to a large workshop with an almost industrial operation. Many of his paintings can be considered copies or pastiches of original compositions by Antwerp painters such as Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens, Gerard Seghers, Jan Boeckhorst, Hendrick van Balen, Erasmus Quellinus the Younger, Gaspar de Crayer and Artus Wolffort as well as Italian masters such as Raffael and Guido Reni. Although his painting only achieved success in Antwerp, as suggested by the infrequency of his paintings in local inventories, many of his small works were probably intended as export items destined for Spain. Most of these were on copper, a painting material that was prized for both its durability and its glossy finish in Spain. Van Herp's works also influenced the spread of copper painting in Mexico through the trade from Spain to Latin America, and reflect a taste for small paintings reminiscent of Rubens' style abroad. He also became famous in England through engravings made from his works, particularly his genre scenes. With National Heritage label on the reverse.

WILLEM VAN HERP, (Antwerp, c. 1614 - 1677). "St. Anne, the Virgin and Child". Oil on panel. With label of National Heritage on the back. Unsigned. Measurements: 49.50 x 64.50 cm; 65 x 80 cm (frame). Painting of devotional theme, representing in a symmetrical and ordered composition to the Holy Family. The Child Jesus occupies the compositional center and is held in her arms by Mary, who wears red tunic and mantle, colors of the Passion and Purity respectively, and Saint Anne, who covers her hair with a handkerchief that enhances her oval face.

HERP THE ELDER, WILLEM VAN Antwerpen 1614 - 1677 Title: Saint Anthony of Padua Proofing Martin von Bullones' Innocence Who Is Charged with Murder. Date: ca. 1660. Technique: Oil on copper. Measurement: 72,5 x 98cm. Frame: Framed. Verso: Collection stamp: "R". Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. Hans Vlieghe associates this painting on copper and with a subject relating to the life of St Anthony of Padua with a painting by Willem van Herp in the National Gallery in London (St Anthony of Padua distributing the bread, oil on copper, 80 x 114.3 cm, inventory number NG203), which is also painted on copper and has similar dimensions and subject matter. Hans Vlieghe surmises that the two works originally belonged to a cycle created around 1660. We are grateful to Jahel Sanzsalazar, who published extensively on the artist, for confirming the attribution after examining the present painting in the original. She regards the present composition the most accomplished among a number of versions of which one is currently in the Museum and Art Gallery, Birmingham (inv. no. 1970P263), and another is conserved in the National Gallery, Slovenia (inv. no. O 1006). Sanzsalazar also points out the painting with the same subject by Adriaen Brouwer, dated circa 1633–35, conserved in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (inv. no. 629), which most likely acted as an inspiration. The present painting shows a violin player in a tavern-like surrounding who, having paused playing, gazes directly at the viewer while being approached by a toasting visitor from behind. The table in front of the musician shows a typical display for the time with a Gouda clay pipe and some tobacco, one of the trading products imported by the Dutch East India Company and the Dutch West India Company. To smoke, a small piece of coal would carefully been taken out of the terracotta bowl next to the musician on the floor and held closely to the pipe. On the table we encounter furthermore a tin beer jug and a full glass of the same beverage. To give the scene some depth a maid in a blue dress and white apron is seen in the background on the left side of the composition. The Antwerp-born Willem van Herp was a productive artist considering the number of paintings that are known, many of which were repeated by the artist himself and most likely created for the art market. Van Herp’s name is associated with that of the Antwerp painter and dealer Matthijs Musson, who had a big international circle and whose name is found in many publications on the art trade in the seventeenth century. The written correspondence of Musson states that many of Van Herp’s paintings were intended for the Spanish market, where many of his works are still found today. Most of his paintings have religious subjects and are often inspired by the works of Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck. Paintings depicting scenes of everyday life are less known by the artist and seem mostly inspired by the works of David Teniers II. The artist trained at least one of his sons in the profession, to continue the family business.
86 x 114,5 cm.

Willem van Herp is known for group portraits in interiors. A family with a total of ten children proudly presents itself here. In the center of the painting is the mother in a white dress who was probably given a family portrait, perhaps for her birthday. Her husband holds a jeweled necklace as a gift for her. His clothes suggest that he belongs to a rich circle of merchants. Children are festively dressed and busy with toys such as weapons or armor for boys and feather fans for girls.

Willem van Herp (Antwerp, c. 1614 - 1677) "The Annunciation" Large oil on copper. 88 x 144 cm. It is presented in a large, carved and gilded wooden frame from the late 18th century. Majestic representation of the episode of the Annunciation, clearly influenced by the great masters Rubens and van Dyck. The scene narrates the moment in which Mary is surprised by the sudden appearance of the Archangel Saint Gabriel. He carries in his left hand a lily that he holds out to the Virgin, an attribute that alludes to the purity of Mary and, particularly, her virginity. He points with his right hand towards the sky, a gesture that indicates that the message he carries is from the Lord. The arrival of the archangel has caused the Virgin Mary, kneeling at a prie-dieu, to be distracted from her reading and turn her face in surprise and emotion. Provenance: Hampel Fine Art Auctions. Cologne. June 26, 2014. Lot 233.

The composition is based on the altarpiece by Sir Anthony van Dyck "The Ecstasy of Saint Augustine" at the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp. Pieter de Jode the Younger (106-1674) had engraved this painting in reverse before 1634 (O. Miller u.a., Van Dyck, A complete catalogue of the paintings, New Haven and London 2004, p. 278), and the present work could well have derived from his print.
