Israhel van Meckenem Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, copperplate engraver, Ornamentstecher, b. 1445 - d. 1503

Israhel van Meckenem (c.?1445 – 10 November 1503), also known as Israhel van Meckenem the Younger, was a German printmaker and goldsmith, perhaps of a Dutch family origin.

He was the most prolific engraver of the fifteenth century and an important figure in the early history of old master prints. In total, he produced over 620 engravings, most of which were copies of other prints; they represent about 20% of print production by all Northern European artists in the period of his working life. His career lasted long enough for him to copy Dürer prints.

He was active from 1465 until his death, and continued to work as a goldsmith; there are some surviving pieces, and many documented commissions from the city of Bocholt. He probably trained in engraving with Master E. S. in South Germany, and may well have been with him at his death c.?1467, since he acquired and reworked forty-one of the master's plates. Another two hundred of van Meckenem's "own" prints were also copies of Master E. S. engravings. He copied many other printmakers, but it is thought that he engraved some 150 of his own original compositions.

    Meckenem, Israhel van: Die Fußwaschung

    Est: €1,800 - €2,400

Die Fußwaschung. Kupferstich aus der Passionsfolge. 20,9 x 14,6 cm. B. VI, S. 207, 10, Lehrs 142 V (von VII), Hollstein 142 V (von VII). Wz. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

Bartsch VI, 148, 191. Geisberg 422 (untere Hälfte). Nagler, Monogrammisten, III, 2806, 15.

ISRAEL VAN MECKENEM The Childrens' Bath. Engraving, circa 1485. 107x138 mm; 4 1/4x5 1/2 inches. Third state (of 3). A very good impression of this extremely scarce engraving, with strong contrasts. We have found only one other impression at auction in the past 30 years. The north German engraver/goldsmith van Meckenem (circa 1445-1503), likely produced this engraving as a companion with his Children at Play, engraving, circa 1485 (Bartsch 188). In these engravings, van Meckenem was among the first European printmakers to depict such mundane realism, in an art market dominated by religious subjects, while perhaps looking back to classical Roman sources such as marble relief sculptures with frolicking putti. MASTER OF THE BERLIN PASSION, ISRAEL VAN MECKENEM THE ELDER The Passion of Christ.

    Est: $40,000 - $60,000

MASTER OF THE BERLIN PASSION, ISRAEL VAN MECKENEM THE ELDER The Passion of Christ. Group of 10 metalcuts with floral frames and 17 woodcuts with border lines, each with contemporary hand coloring in gouache and watercolor, circa 1450-70. Each approximately 90x65 mm; 3 1/2x2 1/2 inches, with narrow margins outside the borders. Very good impressions of these extremely scarce, early prints, with strong colors. The Master of the Berlin Passion, generally accepted to be Israel van Meckenem the Elder, lived and worked in Bocholt, in what is now northwest Germany. A goldsmith by trade, his son--Israel van Meckenem--also trained as a goldsmith and ultimately eclipsed his father as a printmaker. Most of van Meckenem the Elder's prints are of a small fomat and hand colored, suggesting that they were to be pasted into books as substitutes for miniature paintings. Judith with the Head of Holofernes. Engraving, circa 1495. 218x317 mm; 8 5/8x12 1/2 inches. Second state (of 4). Hand with a 4-leaf clover watermark (similar to Lehrs 10 and Briquet 11418, which he dates to around 1501). Trimmed on the plate mark but outside the border line, central vertical crease broken in several places and reinforced on the verso, restored edges losses and several small restored areas in the image, backed with cream wove paper. A fair impression of this extremely scarce, early print. According to Lehrs, there is another impression in the second state with the same watermark in Donaueschingen.
