    JAN VAN NOORDT (AMSTERDAM, 1623 - 1681)

    Est: €30,000 - €50,000

Title: Le Jugement de Paris (The Judgment of Paris) Medium: Oil on Canvas Signature: Unsigned; Inscribed on Label Verso Provenance: Private Collection Framed PICTURES AND PRINTS Tuesday 19th May 2026 14:29:20 JAN VAN NOORDT (AMSTERDAM, 1623 – 1681) Jan van Noordt emerged during the height of the Dutch Golden Age, a period in which Amsterdam stood at the centre of European commerce, culture, and artistic innovation. Working in the decades following Rembrandt’s dominance, van Noordt became one of the important painters who carried the great Amsterdam Baroque tradition into the later seventeenth century. Strongly influenced by the Rembrandt circle, and associated with artists such as Ferdinand Bol and Jacob Adriaensz Backer, van Noordt absorbed the dramatic use of light, atmosphere, and psychological depth that defined Dutch painting at its finest. Yet his work developed its own character — often more restrained, lyrical, and refined in tone. As a painter, van Noordt was admired for portraits, historical works, and religious subjects distinguished by compositional balance and emotional intelligence. His paintings possess a quiet authority, relying on subtle expression and carefully controlled light rather than overt theatricality. His importance lies not only in the quality of his work, but in his place within the artistic lineage of seventeenth-century Amsterdam. Through pupils such as Michiel van Musscher, van Noordt helped transmit the Rembrandtesque tradition into the next generation of Dutch painters. Today, van Noordt is increasingly recognised as an important figure within the wider Rembrandt school — a painter whose work captures both the sophistication and humanity that made the Dutch Golden Age one of the defining periods in European art history.

    Est: €3,000 - €5,000

A seated young girl in a shepherdess costume raises a splendid rose blossom with her hand, which she is weaving into a wreath of flowers that she is holding in her other hand. The girl is wearing a yellow bodice over a white shirt and a yellow skirt, with a wide-brimmed hat on her head held around her neck by red ribbons. Her blonde curls fall over her shoulders on the right. At the bottom left, a lamb stretches its head into the picture. A landscape is sketched in the background. Leaning against the bushes, a shepherd's crook can be recognised on the left edge of the picture. Pictures with pastoral themes were very popular in 17th century Holland. Children were often portrayed as shepherds in Arcadia. Oil on panel, 56 × 48 cm

EINE AMOURÖSE SZENE – DIE BEGEGNUNG VON PREZIOSA UND DON JUAN Öl auf Leinwand. 131 x 174 cm. In geschnitztem blattvergoldetem Prunkrahmen des 17. Jahrhunderts. Est: €12,000 - €14,000

Dutch school second third XVII century, possibly JAN VAN NOORDT (Holland, 1623- after 1676). "The meeting of Don Juan and Preciosa". Oil on canvas. Presents restorations. It conserves frame of epoch. Measurements: 117 x 167 cm; 147 x 198 cm (frame). Preciosa is the main character of La Gitanilla, the first of the twelve stories that compose the book of exemplary tales by Miguel de Cervantes. The nobleman Don Juan de Cárcamo falls in love with Preciosa, a young, beautiful and virtuous gypsy. Preciosa asks the young man to prove his love by abandoning his rank and family and adopting the gypsy way of life for two years. Don Juan accepts and takes the name Andrés. After a series of adventures, it is revealed that Preciosa is actually a noblewoman by birth, kidnapped as a child. The two lovers were then able to marry. Aesthetically and compositionally this work follows the model established by Jan van Noordt, whose original work is now in a private collection. Jan van Noordt moved to Amsterdam in the late 1630s, where he began to train under the guidance of the artist Jacob Adriaensz. Jan, also studied under Abraham van den Tempel- As an independent artist, Van Noordt devoted himself to genre subjects, especially the pastoral scenes that had become fashionable in Dutch art. In the late 1650s he began to receive portrait commissions, which evidently allowed him to return to history painting. In the course of the 1660s his style changed from the studied dynamic elegance of Backer to a mature and robust style inspired mainly by the Flemish painter Jacob Jordaens, who had recently undertaken important commissions in Amsterdam. During these years he taught Johannes Voorhout, among other artists. His output declined from 1672 onwards, due to the general economic recession following the Triple Invasion of 1672. It presents restorations.

Jan van Noordt, Granida and Daifilo

    Est: €16,000 - €18,000

Signed and dated centre left: Joan v. Noordt. f. 1663 The present painting shows a scene from the play "Granida" written in 1605 by P. C. Hooft, which was very popular as a model for Dutch painting in the 17th century. This scene from Act 1 shows the first encounter of the Persian princess Granida with the shepherd Daifilo and his lover Dorilea. Daifilo offers the thirsty princess water in a mussel shell and falls in love with her. After the usual baroque entanglements and intrigues, the two finally become a couple. Jan van Noordt had taken up the theme 18 years earlier, at the beginning of his artistic career, in a painting that is now in the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney (cf. de Witt, op. cit., p. 150, no. 33). The present, later version of the subject shows a much lighter colouring in comparison, whereby in particular the graceful figure of Granida in her elegant, silvery silk robe and the light skin contrasts effectively with the shepherd couple rendered in earthier tones. This work, which has been widely published, can be traced back to 1772, when it came up for sale in an auction in Leiden as lot 1.

Jan van Noordt, The Adoration of the Shepherds

    Est: €20,000 - €25,000

Based on the Biblical text and pictorial tradition, Jan van Noordt has depicted his "Adoration of the Shepherds" at night. He places the Holy Family beside a stable that opens to the right. The Virgin holds up a candle to illuminate the infant Jesus. A bundle of straw lying on the ground skilfully catches the light. The shepherds form a group in the centre, dominated by a shepherd in the foreground. Seen from the side, this shepherd is kneeling to the left towards the infant Jesus and Mary's lap. There is a privately owned drawing of the figure of the kneeling shepherd (de Witt, p. 193), which can be linked to a number of paintings that suggest our picture was painted around 1660. Jan van Noordt was one of the Dutch painters of the Golden Age who never achieved the fame and recognition they deserved. Werner Sumowski, the doyen of the Rembrandt school, wrote as late as 1986: "The oeuvre of Jan van Noordt is one of the most urgent desiderata of art historical research". David A. de Witte subsequently analysed van Noordt's complex and multifaceted oeuvre and published his conclusions in a fundamental monograph in 2007.

DER ENGEL ERSCHEINT HAGAR IN DER WÜSTE Öl auf Holz. Parkettiert. 85 x 115 cm. In ornamental reliefiertem Rahmen. 131 x 174 cm. In geschnitztem, blattvergoldeten Prunkrahmen des 17. Jahrhunderts. Monumental Galant Scene representing Don Juan courting Preciosa. Attributable to Jan Van Noordt (1623/24, Schagen – after 1676, Amsterdam?), Dutch Flemish school of the 17th century

    Est: €35,000 - €45,000

Oil on canvas large dimensions, exquisite shapes and masterful control of light and volumes in faces and clothing. Measurements: 200 x 150 cm framed, canvas measurements only: 170 x 120 cm. Jan (Joan, Johannes) van Noordt was one of the four children of the schoolteacher and carillon player Sibrand van Noordt. The family was originally from the northern Dutch town of Schagen, where Jan was born in 1623 or 1624, moving to Amsterdam in the late 1630s. Jan's brothers Jacobus and Anthonie became the organists most prominent in the city and obtained positions in several churches, including the Oude Kerk and the Nieuwezijds Kapel. Jan appears to have begun learning painting in Amsterdam long before 1640, with Jacob Adriaensz. Over the course of the 1660s, his style moved from the dynamic elegance studied with Backer to a mature and robust style, drawing mainly on the Flemish painter Jacob Jordaens, who had recently undertaken important commissions in Amsterdam. He painted a commission for portraits of Jan Jacobsz. Hinlopen and Leonora Huydecoper. During these years he taught Johannes Voorhout, among other artists. His production declined after 1672, due to the general economic recession following the Triple Invasion of 1672. Provenance: important Andalusian private collection, Sevillian mansion, Seville, Andalusia, Spain. Bibliography consulted: Peter Schatborn, "Tekeningen van Jan van Noordt", Bulletin van het Rijksmuseum 79 (1979), pp. 118-129. With an important Italian frame from the 18th century in gilded wood with gold leaf.

    Est: €16,000 - €18,000

Signed and dated centre left: Joan v. Noordt. f. 1663 The present painting shows a scene from the play "Granida" written in 1605 by Pieter Cornelisz. Hooft, which was very popular as a model for Dutch painting in the 17th century. Depictions of this subject were created by Dirck van Baburen, Govert Flinck and Gerard van Honthorst, among others. Jan van Noordt was probably inspired to this theme by his teacher Jacob Backer, who created several versions of this subject. Van Noordt had also taken up the theme 18 years earlier, at the beginning of his artistic career, in a painting that is now in the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney (cf. de Witt, op. cit., p. 150, no. 33). Our present, later version of the subject shows a much lighter colouring in comparison, whereby in particular the extremely graceful figure of Granida in her elegant, silvery silk robe and the light skin contrasts effectively with the shepherd couple rendered in earthier tones. This work, which has been widely published and was exhibited in Berlin in 1914, can be traced back to 1772, when it came up for sale in an auction in Leiden as lot 1.

Frame: Framed. Literature: W. Sumowski: Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schüler, volume VI, p. 3753, no. 2510 with ill. p. 4133, as an anonymous version of the painting by van Noordt in Budapest. Certificate: Werner Sumowski, Stuttgart, 22.9.1997, copy available. Werner Sumowski initially classified the painting as an anonymous variant to van Noordt's painting in Budapest. After studying the original at Christie's auction in 1991, Sumowski identified the work as van Noordt's own variant, executed much later than the first version. This information can be found in Sumowski's expert opinion of 22.9.1997. The painting is listed in the online database of the RKD, The Hague, as attributed to Joan van Noordt under fig. no. 44471 without mention of the above-mentioned expert opinion by Sumowski. Noordt, Jan van ( 1623 Schagen - nach 1676),

    Est: -

Amsterdam, Nov. 1993) und „Hagar and the Angel“ (Soth. NY, Juni 1989).
