An exceptional 17th-century Dutch Golden Age landscape by Cornelis van Poelenburgh (Dutch, c. 1594-1667) , capturing a luminous Arcadian scene. The composition features classical bathing figures resting alongside a tranquil pool, flanked by towering, sun-drenched Roman ruins. The reverse of the panel retains a multi-layered history of collecting heritage with a vintage gallery tag from The Jenkins Art Gallery (Toronto), explicitly attributing the work to Cornelis van Poelenburgh and titling the piece The Bathing Pool. There is also a well-preserved historical heraldic collection wax seal impressed directly onto the wood back and multiple historic handwritten ink annotations and a specific tracking inventory number. Oil on board, 9 x 7 inches (Framed to 12 x 10 inches).

SCHLAFENDE SCHÖNHEIT MIT AMOR UND EINEM SATYR Öl auf Holz. 37,5 x 29 cm. In breitem Rahmen. Am Eingang einer Höhle, auf einem faltenreichen weißen Laken liegend, eine schlafende, lediglich mit Tuch bedeckte Schönheit. An ihrem Kopfende ein abgelegter großer Bogen und ein wertvoller Köcher mit Pfeilen. Unterhalb ihrer Füße nähert sich ein lüsterner Satyr, der dabei ist, ihr das bedeckende Tuch herunterzuziehen. Die beiden werden durch eine überlange, von links unten nach rechts ziehende Lanze von dem kleinen nackten Amor getrennt, der in der rechten Hand einen Bogen hält und Wasser abschlägt. Im Gegensatz zu sonstigen ähnlichen Darstellungen scheint sich hier der sich abwendende Amor nicht um die beiden zu kümmern. Malerei mit gekonnter Lichtführung und versteckten Anspielungen. Die Landschaftsmalerei stammt wohl aus einer Kooperation mit Jan Both. (1451207) (18)

Cornelis van Poelenburgh (Utrecht 1594/95 - Utrecht 1667) Atalanta and Hippomenes signed on the back Cornelius Poelenburg A leading member of the first generation of Italianate Dutch painters. Born in Utrecht, he studied there with Bloemaert before leaving for Italy, where he remained from about 1617 to 1625. There, his painting style was shaped by the works of Elsheimer and, to a lesser extent, Paul Brill. After his return to Utrecht, his Arcadian landscapes, often featuring ruins and nude figures, sometimes mythological scenes, proved very popular, especially in aristocratic circles. He also occasionally painted figures in landscapes by other artists. Vor dem Stamm eines großen alten Baumes auf einem Felsenstück sitzend, mehrere nackte Frauen, mit abgelegten feinen Kleidungstücken, die wohl ihm Meer ein Bad genommen haben. Eine Bedienstete trägt auf ihrem Kopf einen Korb mit Früchten heran. Am Boden vor ihnen liegend weitere Früchte, darunter auch Feigen. Feigen und Pflaumen könnten hier als Symbol für die sinnliche Liebe verstanden werden. Dimensions : 27 x 32,5 cm Provenance : Collection privée, Nice Peintre hollandais né à Utrecht, auteur de scènes mythotologiques et d'histoire, de compositions religieuses et de paysages animés, Cornelis Van Poelenburgh dit aussi "Bruxo" ou "Satyro" est élève de Bloemaert. Il travaille à Rome de 1616 à 1623 s'inspirant de Raphaël et d'après l'antique pour le Grand-Duc. Il revient à Utrecht vers 1625 et rencontre Rubens à Anvers. En 1627, il travail sur une importante commande des Etats d'Utrecht pour la Princesse Amalia Van Solm et en 1637, il se rend à Londres pour réaliser des figures dans les tableaux de plusieurs artistes, en particulier de Steenwyck. Van Poelenburgh aime représenter des scènes religieuses dans des paysages romains mais citons aussi des nymphes et Diane surprises par quelque satyre. Ces nus s'harmonisent alors aux paysages de forêts et de ruines.

DIE HEILIGE MARIA MAGDALENA IN EINER HÖHLE Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 68 x 81 cm. Bei abendlichem Licht die vor einer großen Höhle auf einem Steinblock sitzende Maria Magdalena mit weißer Bluse und rotblauem Gewand, langen dunkleblonden Haaren sich als Büßerin und reuige Sünderin mit der rechten Hand an die Brust fassend und dabei den Blick leicht nach unten auf ein aufgeschlagenes Buch gerichtet. Hinter dem Buch stehend ein kleines Kruzifix sowie eine gefüllte Glaskaraffe sowie in ihrer linken Hand hält sie einen Schädel unterhalb der großen Steinplatte fast stilllebenhaft sind verschiedene Gemüsesorten zu erkennen wie Kohl aber auch Zwiebeln und Möhren als Symbol ihrer Büßermahlzeit. Malerei mit starkem Hell-Dunkel-Kontrasten bei der durch die helle Beleuchtung besonders Gesicht und Inkarnat als auch das Buch und die Gemüsesorten besonders hervorgehoben werden. (1362114) (1) (18)

Cornelis van Poelenburgh was one of the founders of Dutch Italian landscape painting. The clean and airy atmosphere, the fragmentation of the landscape, the subtle chromatic harmony and brightness indicate that the author was aware of the pictorial texts of Mediterranean landscape painting, spread in the Netherlands by Bartholomew Breenbergh, to the extent that their images are sometimes difficult to distinguish from each other. His figures are very detailed: in the foreground, Jesus is depicted receiving baptism from John the Baptist, while three novices observe the scene on a rocky background.

Cornelis van POELENBURGH (1594-1667) Diane au bain, entourée de nymphes, dans une dense forêt, au crépuscule Huile sur toile 70 x 94 cm. Elève d’Abraham Blomaert à Haarlem, Van Poelenburgh fit en Italie un séjour fondateur entre 1617 et 1625. Influencé par Adam Elsheimer, il s’intéresse au paysage et aux ruines. A Rome, il co-fonde une fraternité de peintres néerlandophones italomanes, dont il est le chef de file : les Bentvueghels. Travailleur infatigable, son œuvre rencontre le succès et se diffuse dans de nombreuses nations (Rome, Florence, Angleterre, Bohème, Pays-Bas), à tel point que Félibien, en 1685, écrivait de lui qu’il existait peu de cabinets de peinture qui ne présentait au moins une œuvre de sa main. Diane au bain, entourée de nymphes est, de loin, son sujet favori, qu’il a représenté plus d’une trentaine de fois, avec une formule graphique toujours renouvelée. Le surnom qu’il portait, parmi les Bentvueghels était d’ailleurs « Satyre ». Notre tableau, aux tonalités automnales, se distingue par sa taille, inhabituellement grande, ainsi que par son ambiance de crépuscule. 1.200 / 1.500 €

Cornelis Van Poelenburgh (Netherlands 1586-1687). An old master allegorical painting. The work is oil/panel. It is initialed C P, lower left and is inscribed with the artist's name, verso. Bears an old label, verso with a probable title, "Father Time Watching the Rekindling of the New Year". It is presented in a modern, carved and gilt, old master style frame. Note: The execution of the work appears to reflect Van Poelenburgh's time in Italy (C. 1623) and may date to the earlier part of his career. Measures: 16'' X 18'' (Exterior) 9'' X 10 7/8'' (Work) Provenance: Property of a NY collector.
