    The Antwerp landscape and genre painter Regemorter was a student and later a professor at the academy in his hometown and he also worked as a restorer. He was particularly brilliant in a moonlight landscape, as can also be seen in the atmospheric night landscape presented here. The artist was able to capture the nocturnal atmosphere convincingly. Over a wide river, the moon stands just above the horizon and illuminates the clouds, the water, and the landscape with its silvery light. This light source is in the center of the picture above the vanishing point of perspective, making the moon the rest point and center of the whole composition. In the foreground to the left of the center a group, two men, two women, and a child, surrounds a fire over which a kettle is hung for cooking. On the right, trees line the bank on its way, a rider comes towards the viewer. In the house on the right edge of the picture, a blacksmith is at work in the reddish glow. The activities indicate that morning is just around the corner. The representation of different light sources in a nocturnal landscape with moonlight was a very popular artistic task that many artists have taken on. With the moonlight landscape, Regemorter joined a great Dutch pictorial tradition from the 17th century, which was founded by Aert van der Neer (1603–1677) and which remained alive until the 19th century. Signed And Dated Lower Right V Regemorter 1789. Further Painting To The Reverse Showing A Partial Portrait Of A Lady With Dog. Broad Giltwood And Gesso Frame. 31½ x 35½ Inches. Biography (bapt Antwerp, 8 Sept 1755; d Antwerp, 17 Nov 1830). He studied at the Academie in Antwerp, where he was considered a mediocre pupil. He worked as a restorer for two Antwerp art collectors, Jan Pilaer and François Beeckmans, whose paintings served as a source of inspiration for his own work. He was admitted to the Antwerp Guild of St Luke and in 1785 became its principal. In 1796 he was appointed professor of drawing at the Academie, where his pupils included his son (2) Ignatius van Regemorter, Mathieu Ignace van Brée and Peter Paul Joseph Noël (1789-1822). He painted mostly genre scenes and landscapes, being especially fond of moonlit views. He exhibited two Moonlit Landscapes at the Antwerp Salon of 1813 and a third at the Salon of 1816 (e.g. La Fère, Mus. Jeanne d'Aboville). Although there is no record that he travelled to Italy, the existence of a painting entitled Italian Peasants among the Ruins (ex-art market, Brussels) suggests that he may have travelled there
