Harris (1938-2024); thence by descent to the current owners. Antony R. Harris was a dealer in 18th-20th century paintings, watercolours and prints in Birmingham during the 1970s who subsequently opened Oldswinford Gallery in Stourbridge (1980-2018). Academic and collector Dr. Johnson Ball (1901-1985) was Principal at Halesowen Technical College, Founder and Principal of Queen's College, Stourbridge, and the author of Paul and Thomas Sandby: Royal Academicians. An Anglo-Danish Saga of Art, Love and War in Georgian England. A large portion of his collection was purchased by Dudley Museum and Art Gallery. This painting is listed and pictured in the 1950s Conspectus for Queen's College, Stourbridge, as hanging in the Reception Hall there (number 30). 'Monsieur Chandelle' as Petrus van Schendel was known, was a Dutch genre painter who specialised in night-time scenes lit by lamps or candles. He studied at the Antwerp Academy, and subsequently lived in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague, before settling in Brussels in 1845. Around this time Schendel began to produce the trademark scenes of which he was a master: evocative works which explored the depiction of light and the varying dramatic effects of its shadows on the subject matter. Schendel exhibited in Amsterdam, Antwerp and The Hague between 1827 and 1867, and in 1845 won a gold medal at The Brussels Exhibition with 'Market by Moonlight'. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, in 1855 and 1856, and won a further medal at the Art Treasures Exhibition in Manchester in 1857 with a painting entitled 'A Fish Market'. His work can be found in prominent collections around the world.

Petrus van Schendel studierte von 1822 bis 1828 an der Königlichen Akademie der Schönen Künste in Antwerpen. Im Anschluss machte er sich als Porträtmaler einen Namen und wechselte häufig den Wohnort (Breda 1828-1829, Amsterdam 1830-1832, Rotterdam 1832-1838 und Den Haag 1838-1845). 1834 wurde er Mitglied der Königlichen Akademie der Schönen Künste in Amsterdam. 1845 ließ er sich dauerhaft in Brüssel nieder. Sein Atelier war unterteilt in einen gut beleuchteten Raum, in dem er malte, und einen abgedunkelten Raum, in dem seine Modelle posierten. Seine Spezialisierung auf nächtliche, von Lampen oder Kerzen beleuchtete Szenen brachten ihm den Beinamen „Monsieur Chandelle“ ein. Er stellte regelmäßig sowohl in Antwerpen, Brüssel und Gent, als auch international in Städten wie Paris und London aus, außerdem veröffentlichte er Lehrbücher über Perspektive und Gesichtsausdruck. Zwischen 1858 und 1870 gehörte er zusammen mit Jozef Israëls, Diederik Jamin und Philip Sadée zu den bestbezahlten Malern in den Niederlanden. Einige seiner Gemälde wurden von König Leopold I. angekauft. Weitere Gemälde hängen u.a. in den Museen von Amsterdam, Brünn, Courtrai, Nizza, Leipzig und Stuttgart. Julia, Romeo und dessen Diener Balthasar befinden sich in der Gruft der Capulets, es naht der Höhepunkt des Dramas. Gekonnt setzt van Schendel die für seine Werke typische Beleuchtungssituation ein. Die Fackel Balthasars erhellt Protagonisten und Gemäuer und erzeugt eine dramatische Wirkung, die von der Gestik und Mimik der dargestellten Figuren zusätzlich gesteigert wird.

M. De Meere bestätigt die Eigenhändigkeit anhand einer Fotografie, wofür wir ihm danken. Er datiert das Gemälde ins Frühwerk van Schendels um 1833.

Provenance: Private ownership, Germany; Acquired in 1977 from Kunsthandel Herbert P. Ulrich, Berlin. We are grateful to Jan de Meere, Boutersem, for his help in cataloguing the present painting on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph. The exploration of light has historically been a defining element of painting. From the Renaissance to contemporary photography, capturing special moods and sources of light in a picture has been a challenge and an incentive for artists. Masters such as Georges de la Tour and Gerrit Dou made this subject their speciality in the 17th century. In the 19th century, the Belgian/Dutch painter Petrus von Schendel was famous and admired for his virtuoso depictions of various materials in special nocturnal lighting conditions. The Belgian son of an impoverished family, his talent won him a place at the Academy in Antwerp and he was soon regularly taking part in exhibitions and salons. He received honours and medals for his finely painted night scenes with moonlight or cleverly used artificial light sources and became one of the most commercially successful Belgian painters of his time. His contemporary market and genre scenes were just as successful as his historical and religious themes. The artist was also in great demand as a portraitist. In addition to his illustrious career as a painter, Petrus van Schendel was also involved in art theory and wrote works in this field. As an inventor, he was also active in the field of brake and tool technology and registered several patents. In 1869, van Schendel, whose mother worked as a market woman, was awarded Belgium's highest honour, the Order of Leopold, for his achievements. This atmospheric genre piece by Petrus van Schendel still works today exactly as the painter might have wished some 150 years ago: its painterly quality casts a spell over the viewer, carrying them away to a bygone era and inviting them to interpret and understand what they see. Five people are gathered around a table. No daylight enters the room; only an oil lamp with a large flame illuminates the scene. In terms of fashion, the painter takes us back to the 17th century. But now the speculation begins: the older man standing and the older woman in the green dress sitting next to him are probably the parents of the two young women, one of whom is writing a document according to her father's dictation. The young man sitting in the foreground is the only one with a glass and a jug in front of him. Is he part of the family or is he an outsider? Is the couple writing their will here in the family council? Or is it a marriage contract or a business agreement? This constellation of people certainly provides an invitation to discussion. It is a rich household: people are wearing fur and the finest fabrics, which the artist has mastered just as skilfully as the depiction of the fragile, thin glass or the reflections of light on the silver writing utensils. Jan de Meere, who has the painting as a high-resolution digital photograph, suggests a date of around 1839, a period in which van Schendel painted many historical subjects. It is possible that the present painting is identical to the work 'Eine häusliche Tafel bei Lampenschein' (Een huisselijk tafereel bij lamplicht), which was shown under the number 358 at an 'Exhibition of Living Artists' in The Hague in 1839 and was awarded a silver medal. LIEBESPAAR IM KERZENLICHT MIT AUSTERN Öl auf Holz. 30,5 x 24,5 cm. Verso alter gedruckter Sammlungsaufkleber „EX THESAURO IRENE & STANHOPE SHELTON“. Im wohl original zugehörigen, schön gearbeiteten schwarzen Rahmen mit feinen Flammleisten und Marketerie. Das nicht allzu große, nahezu porzellanartig fein gemalte Bild zeigt eine junge Frau an einem Tisch, darauf ein Kerzenlicht, das im dunklen Raum nur die Hauptgegenstände der Darstellung beleuchtet. In der linken Hand hält sie ein Weinglas, während ihr der junge Liebhaber eine Zinnschale auf den Tisch legt, von dem sie eine der Austern nimmt. Dabei ist das Austernessen mit einer alten erotischen Konnotation zu sehen. Am linken Bildrand ist noch ein Krug zu sehen. Van Schendel war ab 1834 Mitglied der Königlichen Akademie in Amsterdam. Für seine Portraits, Seestücke und Landschaften bekannt, zeigt er sich jedoch mit einem Großteil seines Werkes als Meister der Kerzenlicht-Malerei. Nicht wenige Marktszenen, Genredarstellungen, aber auch Portraits hat er in nächtliches Fluidum getaucht, mit Kerzen- oder Fackelbeleuchtung. Diese Malweise hatte in den Niederlanden bereits eine lange Tradition. Nach den sogenannten Candellight-Masters war es vor allem Godfrid Schalcken (1643-1706), der für seine Kerzenlichtbilder bekannt wurde. Hier besticht eine Feinmalerei, die letztlich ebenfalls auf niederländische Meister des 17. Jahrhunderts, wie etwa Mieris, zurückgeht. A.R. Signed lower right: Petrus van Schendel The Dutch painter Petrus van Schendel was a master of nocturnal scenes. His masterful depiction of artificial light sources such as candles and torches, but also the glow of the moon, lends his paintings an unmistakable atmosphere. The present work is a characteristic example of Schendel's art. It is not listed in Jan de Meer's 2012 monograph on the painter. However, the author confirmed it to Christie's as an authentic work in 2021, dating it to 1834. This makes it is a relatively early work by the painter, who was born in 1806. The piece shows a busy fair being held in a town square after dark, under the light of a full moon. The surrounding buildings are only dimly discernible, but the artist depicts the various characters visiting the fair - a market seller, a trumpeter, a quack doctor, an elegantly dressed couple - all the more precisely, rendering the glow of the light on their faces and their robes and hats in perfect detail. Artists have been fascinated by the magic of artificial light since the early 17th century and have often taken on nocturnal scenes as a special artistic challenge.

Dienstmädchen an einem Geflügelstand Öl auf Holz. 39,5 x 32,7 cm. Beigegeben Echtheitszertifikat von Dr. J. M. M. de Meere, Verfasser der Monographie über Petrus van Schendel. Auf einem nächtlichen städtischen Marktplatz bieten einige Händler ihre Ware an. Im Vordergrund stehend eine junge Frau mit einem kupfernen Korb in ihrer rechten Armbeuge, vor einem überdachten Verkaufsstand, an dem an einem Seil, an einer Stange befestigt, ein Huhn herabhängt sowie am rechten Bildrand ein aufgehängter Hase. Auf dem Tisch selbst weiteres Geflügel, eine brennende, leicht flackernde Kerze, die den Stand und auch das feine weiche Gesicht und die Arme der jungen Frau beleuchtet. Hinter der Kerze zudem ein großer geflochtener Korb zum Transport von Geflügel. Mit ihrem feinen Gesicht, den geröteten Wangen und den glänzenden Augen schaut die Dargestellte interessiert aus dem Bild heraus. Im dunklen Hintergrund, nur schemenhaft erkennbar, weitere Gebäude, aus deren Fenster teils weiches gelbliches Licht fällt. Am linken Rand, hinter der jungen Frau, die Gesichter zweier Männer erkennbar. Malerei in der für den Künstler typischen qualitätvollen feinen Malweise, bei zurückhaltender Farbgebung mit bravourös gekonnter Hell-Dunkel-Inszenierung. Minimale Retuschen.
