Circle of Gerard van Spaendonck, Dutch 1746-1822- Study of Iris Germanica; pencil and watercolour on paper, 39.5 x 22.5 cm. Note: Amongst other qualities, the subtle undulation in the contours of the petals in this detailed study are stylistically distinctive and close to that of fully attributed works by van Spaendonck. Indeed, its delicate handling is highly reminiscent of the artist's approach, and further recalls an album of 26 watercolours, also assigned to the 'Circle of van Spaendonck', which sold at Christie's, London, on 4 June 2001, lot 53 (£333,750). Many of van Spaendonck's watercolours were used to inform his prints, particularly in his famous folio of lithographs entitled 'Fleurs Dessinees d'apres Nature', published 1799-1801, and featuring a precise depiction of 'Iris Pallida' which resembles the present work. Though it may be by van Spaendonck himself, this piece could also come from one of several talented artists whose careers as flower painters were shaped by his teaching, including his most famous pupil, Pierre Joseph Redouté (1659-1840). Indeed, the present work resembles a strikingly similar watercolour by Redouté, also depicting 'Iris Germanica', from his celebrated volume 'Les Liliacées', which sold at Freeman Fine Arts, Philadelphia, on 29 April 2018, lot 2.
