Measurements: 110 x 82 cm; 133 x 104 cm (frame). The floral garland, very developed in this work, competes in prominence with the subject that frames (the Holy Family with San Juanito). The almost botanical precision and the maturity of the flowers are reminiscent of Thielen's work. Warm tones dominate, tinged with whites that bring luminosity. The false painted frame was also frequent in Thielen's painting, which echoed the prevailing trends in Flanders. This work is comparable to others in which he collaborated with other painters, such as "Garland with the Bust of Flora" (Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum). He completes the floral garlands with a tender image of the Holy Family with St. Johnny and a ram. Jan Philip van Thielen was a Flemish Baroque painter who specialized in vases and garlands. From a noble family, he held the title of lord of Cauwenberg. At the age of thirteen he entered as an apprentice in the workshop of his brother-in-law Theodoor Rombouts in Antwerp. He then studied with Daniel Seghers, of whom he became the most outstanding follower. In 1642 he entered the guild of St. Luke in Antwerp as a master. Of his nine children, two of them, Anna Maria Theresia and Francisca Catharina van Thielen, also became flower painters. In October 1660 he enrolled as a free master in the guild of St. Luke in Mechelen. Esteemed in the years in which he was active as the most important Flemish garland painter, he enjoyed the protection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm and at least one of his most valued and imitated compositions, St. Philip in a Niche Surrounded by Flowers, now in the Museo del Prado, entered the Spanish royal collection.

Against a dark, almost black background, a bright, finely composed ensemble of five flowers unfolds, flanked by two small insects. The depiction is of extraordinary precision and naturalism, typical of 17th-century Flemish flower painting - especially that of Jan Philips van Thielen, whose signature style is clearly evident here. The upper right corner is dominated by a magnificent parrot tulip with white, pink and red flame markings. Its twisted, pointed petals unfold dramatically and, with their expressive colours, are a real eye-catcher. Directly below, a delicate pink peony blooms, lushly filled, with soft, slightly curled leaves - a symbol of fleeting beauty. To the left is a white-yellow rose, whose almost porcelain-like texture is modelled by fine shadows. Above it rise three delicate white daffodils with bright yellow stamens - almost dance-like in their lightness, in fine contrast to the fullness of the larger flowers. In the lower left part of the picture, two insects enliven the scene: a small whitish butterfly seems to have just landed on the tip of a leaf - a delicate hint of movement. Below it, a bumblebee or bee can be seen, painted in deep brown, barely standing out from the background - a memento mori that refers to the fragility and transience of life. The overall composition is clearly thought out: the flowers are in balanced proportion to each other, overlapping slightly but without crowding. The combination of delicate floral abundance, insects and the deep darkness of the background creates a concentrated, almost meditative mood. Direkt darunter blüht eine zartrosa Pfingstrose, üppig gefüllt, mit weichen, leicht gekräuselten Blättern - Sinnbild für vergängliche Schönheit. Links daneben erscheint eine weißgelbe Rose, deren fast porzellanartige Textur durch feine Schatten modelliert wird. Darüber erheben sich drei zierliche weiße Narzissen mit leuchtend gelben Staubgefäßen - fast tänzerisch leicht, in feinem Kontrast zur Fülle der größeren Blüten. Im unteren linken Bildbereich beleben zwei Insekten die Szene: Ein kleiner weißlicher Schmetterling scheint gerade eben auf einer Blattspitze gelandet zu sein - eine zarte Andeutung von Bewegung. Darunter ist eine Hummel oder Biene zu erkennen, tiefbraun gemalt, kaum vom Hintergrund abgehoben - ein Memento mori, das auf die Zerbrechlichkeit und Vergänglichkeit des Lebens verweist. Die Gesamtkomposition ist klar durchdacht: Die Blüten stehen in ausgewogenem Verhältnis zueinander, überlagern sich leicht, aber ohne Enge. Signed and dated lower left: I. P. Van. Thielen F. Ano 1653 Jan Philip van Thielen was born into an aristocratic family and could count two of the most important Flemish history painters of his times - Theodoor Rombouts and Erasmus Quellinus the Younger - among his in-laws. Van Thielen began his artistic training under Th. Rombouts in Antwerp and continued under Daniel Seghers. He became a master of the Antwerp guild of Saint Luke in 1641 and his daughter continued the family tradition of still life painting. Van Thielen specialised in painting floral still lifes and garlands. This form of composition, featuring a garland surrounding a central religious or mythological scene, was developed in Antwerp in the early 17th century by Jan Brueghel the Elder and Hendrick van Balen. Van Thielen's tutor Daniel Seghers also played an important role in the establishment of the motif. Van Thielen cooperated with various other painters, including his relative Erasmus Quellinus the Younger, Frans Francken the Younger and Nicolas de Largilliere, for the central figural scenes. This work shows Venus in her attempt to deter her beloved Adonis from participating in the hunt in which he was to meet his death. The mythological scene is surrounded by a garland in van Thielen's typically regular manner, comprising tulips, roses, peonies, viburnum, anemones, narcissi, hyacinths, forget-me-nots, campanuli, morning glories, pinks and irises.

Meijer vom RKD, Den Haag, bislang unbekannt und er bestätigt die Eigenhändigkeit anhand einer Fotografie, wofür wir ihm danken. Es stellt eine Bereicherung für das Oeuvre Jan Philip van Thielens dar, der sich auf die Darstellung von Blumen spezialisierte.
