John Varley, OWS,  Beddgelert Bridge at the foot of Snowdon, North Wales

          Est: £700 - £1,000

John Varley, OWS,  British 1778-1842-  Beddgelert Bridge at the foot of Snowdon, North Wales;  watercolour heightened with scratching out on paper, signed and dated 'J. Varley. / 1811' (lower left), further signed, titled and dated with an illustrated map of the area by Varley 'Bedgellert Bridge / at the foot of Snowdon n. Wales / J. Varley. 1811' on the backing paper, 47 x 65.8 cm.  Provenance:  The executors of the late Mrs D. Blake sale, Christie's, London, 30 June 1981, lot 76 (£2,600 hammer).  Private Collection, UK.  Exhibited:  (Probably) Old Water-Colour Society, 1812, no. 187.  Note:  Beddgelert Bridge is in Caernarfon, North Wales, and, after being destroyed in a flood in 1799, was repaired and doubled in width between 1802 and 1811. Varley first visited Beddgelert on a tour of North Wales with J. C. Barrow in 1798 or 1799, and after that date executed many idealised views of it, exhibiting them at the Old Water-Colour Society in 1805, 1810, 1812, 1815 and 1834. At least eight other versions are known. The importance which Varley attached to the present version is indicated by the separate sheet (47 x 66 cm, framed with the watercolour), signed, titled and dated by the artist, on which he has made a rough aerial sketch of Snowdon and the surrounding landmarks (Beddgelert, Capel Curig, Llanberis, Caernarvon etc.)  A watercolour of the same view by Varley, of similar dimensions and taken eight years later than the present work, sold recently at Sotheby's, New York, 24 May 2023, $4,500 hammer.
