Richard Vaux (American, born 1940), Solar Harp Series, modern abstract polymer mixed media painting on canvas with a separate top layer of embellished vinyl, featuring a geometric abstract composition with intersecting linear forms and subtle tonal variations in muted metallic and earth tones. The work is signed at the bottom right and retains a gallery label on the verso noting the title, series, and medium. Presented in a modern metal frame. Work Size: 37.5 x 79.5 in. Dimensions: 38.5 X 80.25 X 2 in. Condition: Good overall vintage condition, with typical surface wear and patina consistent with age and the artist’s intended textural finish. Due to the nature of the vinyl medium, the surface remains vulnerable to indentation if improperly handled. The frame exhibits normal storage wear and patina. Richard Vaux (American, b. 1940) Suspended Landscape Painting Acrylic on canvas. Signed on reverse Richard Vaux 1973. Painting measures 66.8 inches high, 48 inches wide. Frame measures 68 inches high, 49.5 inches wide. Label on reverse with title Suspended Landscape. In good condition. From AskArt: The art of Richard Vaux has been described by historians as Formalist, Romantic, and Abstract Impressionist. The Irma Jaffe review in the April, 1993 issue of Art News mentions "Entering the radiant environment created by the paintings of Richard Vaux is to move into an atmospheric, suggestive space that serves as a metaphor for the world of nature…" His "archetypal Lightscapes" have evolved over the past 40 years. The Abstract Impressionist paintings and works on paper often appear specific and "realistic"…often "abstract, natural." To Vaux each new work is an abstraction inspired by nature and the nature of the media. His works are about light and illumination… the visible and the invisible. Since his first visit to Iceland in 1970, the art of Richard Vaux has been strongly influenced and inspired by the natural aspects of that country. Most recently, Vaux spent the month of May, 2003, as Artist in Residence at The Harfnarfjordur Institute of Culture and Fine Art in Hafnarfjordur, Iceland. During his tenure at the institute several experiences inspired the present "Archetypal Lightscapes." The early morning sunsets at 12:30 a.m. and sun rises three hours later, the dramatic weather changes from hour to hour, the massive collections of the wind blown lava dust on the glacier walls, the hot material bubbling to earths surface from deep within and the great visual contrasts in the uplands of Borgarfjordur and the Husafell are some of the aspects of the 2003 experience which became a passion to Vaux and a profound influence on his new work.
