Beginning in May 1918, while living and teaching near South Glastonbury CT, he worked with two other artists, Albertus Jones and James Goodwin McManus, and with students in a sketching class to apply paint in such a way as to "conceal something by making it look like nothing." They claimed that this was better than the commonly-practiced alternative of making something appear to look like something else. They announced that they were "willing to enter the service of the government to demonstrate the worth of their theory in any way it can be worked out."

Housed in a signed gilt custom arts and crafts frame made by Paul Carter Goodnow (1958-2012). Frame is signed Paul Carter Goodnow. Artwork signed on back, beneath frame backing. Overall Size: 12 5/8 x 16 7/8 in.  Sight Size: 6 1/2 x 10 1/2 in.  #3680 .  Paul Goodnow (1958 - 2012) was active/lived in  Rhode Island, Massachusetts. Paul Goodnow is known  for landscape, human activity and harbor scene  painting. Paul won many awards for his art workand his hand-carved gilded frames. He was a member  at many art associations including Rockport Art,  Lyme Art and North Shore. His work was shown at  many galleries throughout New England.  Nunzio Vayana (1878 - 1960) was very active in the arts in Palm Beach, Florida in the 1930's, 40's and 50's. He was also a member of The Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts; Society of Connecticut Artists; Springfield Art League; American Federation of Arts; Gloucester Art Society; Venetian Art Club, Venice, Italy; American Art Club, Paris, France; International Art Society, Rome, Italy; Archaeological Institute, Rome, Italy; National Association American Prof. Artists; Palm Beach Art League, (Hon. Member); Daytona Beach Art League,(Hon. Member); Ridge Art Association, Florida (Hon. Member); & Royal Society of Arts, London, England. Awards included Venice Art Club, Selective Prize, 1921; Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, Popular Prize,1924; International Exhibition in Rome, Honorary Mention, 1925; Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, William Gedney Bunce Prize, 1926; & several others.He is listed as a major figure in the Florida Lost Colony Artists of Saint Augustine.
